Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico

Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

He says it’s because of phen and illegal immigration - less than 1% come from Canada.

This will have significant implications for the Canadian economy, the American economy and by domino the world. Not to mention the fact it could start a significant trade war.

The US doesn’t subsidise Canada - they buy Canadian goods. Approx 40% of their crude oil comes from Canada for example.

There is also an agreed trade deal between the US/Canada and Mexico that Trump agreed to and signed in his first years in office.

YABU - it doesn’t matter to me
YANBU - let’s stand up to a bully and support our allies

@Grammarnut "We have got Trump because the Democrats prefer to pretend that men can be women and that some women can have a penis"

This is a myth. The polling does not suggest this was a common or important reason people voted for Trump. It was about immigration and the economy. The American public is highly economically ignorant and actually believed his claims the tariffs will help America. The ones who have any sense at all will be regretting it now.
They also believed he would deport 15- 20 million undocumented migrants. He can't deliver on that either. At the rate he's going, he won't even get to a million in the entire four years. It's nothing but the biggest, most successful con job in the history of the world.

We have much bigger issues than whether someone knows what a woman is.

Difficult for me to understand people voting for Trump, especially on single issues, when they were aware of how dangerous he is.

I agree with @CovenOfCheeses - you’ve got what you wanted, (tho some still waiting for egg prices to fall) and let the world burn and everyone else go to hell.

It’s interesting how the Dems are are to blame for the blind stupidity.

Certainly, I agree with you on the other reasons for the Trump vote, but his campaign was built around 'Kamala Harris is for they/them, Trump is for you', which is indicative of what his campaign thought was a pertinent issue - and also showed Harris up as cloth-eared and out of tune with many women. Also indicative is that one of his firts EOs was to outlaw TiMs in women's sport - so he thought the issue important. We cannot tell how accurate the polls are, btw, unless we know the questions.

Fwiw, globalised free trade has not been the panacea we were sold.

I've always thought Kamala's 'they/them' meant other people in general (i.e. not Americans, not Trump supporters, not right-wing Christians etc ) He was emphasising that the Democrats believed in helping society as a whole (which, horror of horrors, includes poor people, foreign people, unemployed people, Communists...) whereas Trump put 'America' (mainly white and working) first.

Not being particularly up with US politics I am not sure. But Trump's campaign interpreted the phrase as referring to gender ideology pronouns. And it's a bit odd to refer to those you mean to help - and whom you hope will vote for you - as 'they', it's a little othering. Besides which the Democrats had had 4 years to help those people and build a constituency for themselves.
Also, Trump won a large % of black and Hispanic votes to his cause - they didn't feel included by Ms Harris, obviously, and esp Hispanics likely believe in traditional values, as do many blue-collar white voters. How come the Democrats did not get their inclusive message across to such people? Perhaps because they - as have many European politicians - have embraced globalization and a climate change agenda that is impoverishing poor Americans? Jobs ordinary people did have been outsourced where labour is cheaper, too, a feature of neo-liberal capitalism.

Oh good. Hopefully his orange friend holds shares and lost too.

Lets hope it keeps falling.

Unfortunately a falling stock market impacts everyone worldwide with investments and pension funds.

GasPanic · 11/03/2025 12:54

What action can we take against Trump ?

He's cut the foreign aid budget.
Is "reforming" the civil service through cuts.
Now is about to go after people on benefits.

The super rich of the world have worked out the only possible way they can get any richer is to make the rest of the world poorer.

That is not a joke. It's what is happening.

If your American try and leave. DSil and her husband live in Aspen but are looking at moving back to Canada. Luckily they have kept their Canadian citizenship and are dentists so can work anywhere.

If you can get Trump calling himself a moron trending, he might give himself an aneurysm.

(He said that a moron had signed thr 2019 NAFTA - it was him).

CovenOfCheeses · 11/03/2025 20:55

You can boycott American goods and services. Put pressure on their companies to stop implementing his policies by proxy, supporting Trump directly or getting him to influence foreign policy such as trying to block the Digital services tax bill in the UK and supporting right wing pro-Kremlin parties in Europe.

there are several websites that show European alternatives
https://european-alternatives.eu/

Homepage | European Alternatives

We help you find European alternatives for digital service and products, like cloud services and SaaS products.

Yes - it's complicated and I agree that trying to address climate change etc doesn't fit nicely with improving conditions for many people right now. It's a problem with many electoral systems - parties want to get elected and the long term issues get ignored. I'm glad I'm not a politician.

Yes, a boycott is illegal, says the lecturer of free speech. Everybody can do what they want and say what they want, until they do and it's not in the US's interests, it seems. We're practically bullying Elon, the poor lamb, who never was aggressive and spiteful to anyone ever, as evidenced by his X-timelime; recent example is smacking down former NASA astronaut Mark Kelly.
