Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

He says it’s because of phen and illegal immigration - less than 1% come from Canada.

This will have significant implications for the Canadian economy, the American economy and by domino the world. Not to mention the fact it could start a significant trade war.

The US doesn’t subsidise Canada - they buy Canadian goods. Approx 40% of their crude oil comes from Canada for example.

There is also an agreed trade deal between the US/Canada and Mexico that Trump agreed to and signed in his first years in office.

YABU - it doesn’t matter to me
YANBU - let’s stand up to a bully and support our allies

I wouldn't put it past the US government to hand out some of the "saved" DOGE money to their friends and family to purchase a Tesla, to "stabilize the market; essentially a protective measure to scaffold a US company. I am ironic, but that doesn't mean it they wouldn't do it.

In other news:

"Elisabeth Braw, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, wrote for the Centre for European Policy Analysis this week: “Nobody – nobody – would have thought that western businesses or consumers would use such tools against America."

🤔

After Trump 1.0 quite a few countries very quietly make preparations just in case there was a Trump 2.0. Certainly the EU did. Which means they can fine-tune tariffs down to almost a zip code level. Other countries probably never said anything at all, and just made sure they were prepared.

Talk softly and carry a big stick. I wonder where people learned that ?

Never mind propping up Tesla, he's siphoning taxpayers' money into his own wallet by charging the Secret Service for accommodation and golf buggies at Mar-a-Lago. And he's certainly not doing it at cost, either.

Yes, I read that as well; already for the first term, too.

and now there were articles about how much it costs that he travels to Florida for the weekend every week. All that cost-cutting has nothing to do with him personally; in his case it's more is more. Also the NFL games he visited for show caused high costs for protection. Not really signs of a selfless leader who understands the struggle of the working classes.....

His presidential travel is likely to cost as much in one year as Obama's did in eight.

Hockey legend but many Canadians are questioning his patriotism. He lives in the US and certainly seems a big fan of Trump’s.

TBH- I think after he left the Oilers and went to LA because he married an America actress we pretty much were done then.

Still a hockey legend, but not cool otherwise.

Those who voted for Trump out of ignorance or selfishness have much to answer for. Democracy comes with responsibility. The situation in the US is an excellent illustration of why proper civic education should be mandatory and why well-funded public service media is essential to a well-functioning democracy. Incompetent voters will vote for incompetent leaders, at an horrendous cost to the country - and in this case, the rest of the world.

Tbh, I wouldn't have thought even basic education would have been required to see that trump is a loon, a conman and a rascist. I could add a list of other traits that are less than appealing but he already takes up too much of my time wondering wtaf every day.

It's bizarre. The man was a joke in the 1980s - inherited a load of wealth and hasn't exactly invested it wisely. Then he had a reality TV show and everyone suddenly everyone thinks that he's some sort of business genius.

Parker231 · 20/06/2025 16:30

This is going to be interesting - Carney has given Trump 30 days to agree to a new trade deal or Canada will impose new reciprocal tariffs.

Maggiethecat · 20/06/2025 19:01

That is going to be interesting! The toddler in chief will not concede to ultimatums even if conceding is in the US’s best interest.

Parker231 · 23/06/2025 19:48

Gives me a good feeling

Just seen Trump’s latest threat of 100% tariffs - he’s a lunatic! Americans are complaining about the ever increasing prices but he keeps on throwing around tariffs.
