Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico

Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

He says it’s because of phen and illegal immigration - less than 1% come from Canada.

This will have significant implications for the Canadian economy, the American economy and by domino the world. Not to mention the fact it could start a significant trade war.

The US doesn’t subsidise Canada - they buy Canadian goods. Approx 40% of their crude oil comes from Canada for example.

There is also an agreed trade deal between the US/Canada and Mexico that Trump agreed to and signed in his first years in office.

YABU - it doesn’t matter to me
YANBU - let’s stand up to a bully and support our allies

Mexico strengthened their border and took their criminals back so it worked and tariffs have been removed. Canada need to do the same and address cross border drugs trafficking. Then it will stop.

Fentanyl entering the US from Canada makes up 0.2% of the fentanyl entering the country (and it's Americans that are doing the smuggling). If you think these tariffs have anything to do with fentanyl, you've been duped.

If either country has reason to feel anger at the other for illegal items crossing the border, then it's Canada. The vast majority of firearms used in crimes in Canada can be traced back to thr US.

Edited

21,000 firearms to Canada from the US and 200,000 to Mexico.

US border authorities seized 21,889 pounds of fentanyl in the 2024 fiscal year. Of that amount, 43 pounds were seized at the Canadian border — about 0.2% — compared with 21,148 pounds at the Mexican border, about 96.6%.

Trump backed down. Both deals had been agreed previously. There is nothing new here but his base will think he’s won. He’s still lost the trust of his allies who’ll be looking at more stable partners.

Vance seems to be very quiet. I wonder if his plan all along was to double cross ' Americas Hitler' and allow Trump snd Musk to cause so much noise and outrage and act so bizarrely that he can, in a year or two raise concerns and have him impeached?

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/02/2025 07:46

Doubtful... he'll want the base for his own run or other aspirations. @Tomatotater

What about if/when Trump applies tariffs to the UK?

He did that during his last presidential term. He applied 20% tariff on imports for certain goods. His logic was the US customers should buy from domestic suppliers. our customer was a global manufacturer, American headquarters and distributed from usa to north and South America. They bought their source product from uk (they had part share in uk business) as there was no USA manufacturer of source product. He didn’t listen to that and I had to charge them every week for the tariff as we couldn’t pay the sums. It was over £1m per month Luckily they were large enough to absorb whilst they challenged in court. Eventually they got all tariff refunded as did many of other customers. We called it trump tariff in our records.

Tomatotater · 04/02/2025 07:57

Trumps base didn't win it for him though. People who hated him less than Harris and people who couldn't be bothered to vote or couldn't bear to vote for either won it for him. Trumps base is a bunch of crackpots and conspiracy theorists. It wouldn't surprise me if he wanted to build his own following, and have a legacy that wasn't 'Vice Predident to to the worst President in US history' but ' man who saved America'. He knows what happened to Pence. He's not naive. I may be wrong of course and he could be just as mad as Trump.

“BTW, according to the official exit poll, 65% of native Americans voted for Trump.”

Apparently not, it was a flawed exit poll. The last lot of numbers I could find re who voted for whom show that 57% of Native Americans voted Democrat - for Harris.
^^

  • Native American voters leaned Democratic in the 2024 elections, with 57% supporting Harris compared to 39% for Trump, while prioritizing tribal sovereignty, land rights, and cultural preservation as key voting issues.

Thanks - always good to have evidence and sources.

I listened to a book a few months back. Can't remember title or author unfortunately but it was very interesting.

Basically the premise was the the US is the only nation that can be truly self sufficient in the modern world as they have all the metals and minerals required for manufacturers without going to other countries. There were lots of other points too.

Basically we will have to go back to horses and ploughs and seasonally produced goods. And forget big pharma
And your meds

We do need the US

Trump negotiated 10k patrols to the border. The original agreement was 15k....so he negotiated fewer patrols . Sheinbaum mugged him off very publicly. He has backed off because he tanked the economy and Ontario were going to cancel Musks Starlink 100 million dollar contract. Trump is negotiating with Ukraine to get lithium for Musks batteries (rare earth metal) . Trump is lining his own pockets ( meme coins ) and will provide tax breaks and grants for Musks projects. Trump and Musk are currently raiding USAID which funds so many projects that help everyday Americans . So they aren't raiding the Billionaires they're giving them tax breaks, they're raiding everyday Americans. Disgusting.

If you think it's got anything to do with fentanyl you're not listening and watching what is actually happening.

I don't think the US is self-sufficient. Maybe in theory, but if they have all the minerals etc they need, what's Greenland about? Why are they in trade deficits with so many countries? They also overproduce a lot of things like meat and corn through intensive farming so need to palm it off on other countries, which is why any trade deal with them will involve relaxing hormone and antibiotics rules for food. They may be self sufficient in theory but they either haven't changed practices to adapt to changing circumstances- less, better quality food for example- ( outside of California, by far the richest State) and they have basically, Democrats and Republicans, decimated whole swathes of the country- health wise and jobs and industry wise and all at the altar of big food and pharma and tech billionnaires. A bit like us, they haven't invested enough in health or education to get enough people fit and able enough to be mining minerals, manufacturing products and growing food without mass immigration, which they don't want.

I think it's really hard to boycott goods these days. Everything is everywhere. What ARE American goods? I can think of really... 90s things?

I guess it's Coca Cola and Pepsi, Levis, Disney, Mars, MacDonalds, KFC, etc, Nike, Starbucks. But a lot of that is brands, right? It's not really things they make. What do they actually make just them?

What about things like Google, Microsoft, Apple? Isn't it all made in China?

I'm not really sure if Trump understands that what he is doing will adversely affect American manufacturers? I'm not sure either how much I buy that is made in the US. I have a Mac but I'm guessing that the parts for that will be imported into the US so will in future have tariffs imposed before they get there? I can't see US businesses putting up with that as so many components for their electrical products are imported. Presumably they'll simply start building their products in the countries where they are sold if that is cheaper.
I don't buy any of the American brands like those you list in your second para anyway.

Coolasfeck · 04/02/2025 09:07

I’m guessing this was noisy cover for Elon Musk stealing the social security data for every American.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 04/02/2025 09:14

@Coolasfeck

Just looked it up it's called "the end of the world is just the beginning. "

SerendipityJane · 04/02/2025 09:54

All of Trumps posturing was for his home grown MAGA crowd.

When you add that filter to your data you get straight lines everywhere.

Remember - with MAGA reality doesn't matter.

Again: when you add that filter to your data you get straight lines everywhere.

The UKs role here, is to ensure that all of our interactions with Trump allow his MAGA base to wank themselves stupid (or hopefully to death) over how Trump is "the man".

Trump and Musk are currently raiding USAID which funds so many projects that help everyday Americans

It is a foreign aid program. It has both a ‘legitimate’ and a ‘covert’ aspect. As these things tend to.

In any case, taxpayers should not be funding this

This is the kind of reductive thinking that shows someone with no understanding of the larger picture.

USAID keeps HIV/AIDS under some degree of control in countries like Africa. If no one is doing that in countries that can't afford to do it themselves, you know what happens? The virus mutates. And you know what happens when the virus mutates? And we're out of the WHO and we have a science denier in as head at HHS? A new, likely more lethal variant, starts killing people in the West and we're on the back foot because we've stopped tracking data.

Dont know why but my post should have said 'and payment systems which funds... ' either way they're pillaging taxpayers money. Let's not forget it protects Americans by detecting and initiating immunisation programmes. You're obviously very isolationist in your thinking. Seems OK until something like the fires in LA needed Canada and Mexico firemen and resources to help put them out. I'm sure the irony isn't lost on them.

Produce from our own farmers

We can't produce enough calories to feed the population.

I have seen an argument that it is just about possible, it involves peas - a lot of peas.

Leilanii · 04/02/2025 11:14

There is definitely a mindset in America, which predates Trump's first term by many, many years that the US is the best country in the world and that everyone wants to live there. Which is why it's only recently that more Americans even have passports.

SerendipityJane · 04/02/2025 11:24

Personally I would be more concerned that all US citizen data is now being siphoned off by Musk and Mates. Which will make anonymity impossible, and put every American under the cosh of a "We know who you are and where you live" regime. Details that would have required a court order before will now be available to anyone Musk and Co ask to get them.

I suspect they are already sorting that data to start picking off the undesirables.

Remember that huge fuck-off database that NuLabour wanted to create under Blair ?
