Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico

Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

He says it’s because of phen and illegal immigration - less than 1% come from Canada.

This will have significant implications for the Canadian economy, the American economy and by domino the world. Not to mention the fact it could start a significant trade war.

The US doesn’t subsidise Canada - they buy Canadian goods. Approx 40% of their crude oil comes from Canada for example.

There is also an agreed trade deal between the US/Canada and Mexico that Trump agreed to and signed in his first years in office.

YABU - it doesn’t matter to me
YANBU - let’s stand up to a bully and support our allies

I don't see an issue with either of those.

He celebrated a trade deal with Ireland, noting that the US and the UK (large trading partners of Canada and Ireland, respectively) were turning inwards. That was a reasonable observation.

I'm not sure why Canada and the UK failing to reach a new trade deal means that Canada "isn't a loyal friend" to the UK any more than it means that the UK "isn't a loyal friend" to Canada.

Trudeau wasn't celebrating a trade deal with Ireland;
'Mr Trudeau, who is in Ireland for a three-day visit ahead of the G20 meeting in Hamburg'

More recently, Canada wanted to force hormone-treated beef on the UK market in last year's trade negotiations which is why we walked away. I'm not sure we owe Canada any special obligations on trade under Trudeau. We need to look out for our own interests which is why I disagree with the op's request.

Unfortunately one of the best ways to boycott US goods is to stop using Amazon - I will do this but however more will??

Products from Amazon don't tend to be made in the USA do they? I understand Amazon is a US company but the goods themselves aren't.

What American products do we import?

Love him or hate him Trump is doing what he thinks is best for his country and it's people. It's a shame our UK government don't do the same for us instead of pandering to the EU all the time.

Ok, we stop pandering to the EU,what do we eat?

"I just had a good call with President Trump. Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan — reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl. Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border.
In addition, Canada is making new commitments to appoint a Fentanyl Czar, we will list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the border, launch a Canada- U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering. I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with $200 million.
Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together."

Trump will still have had an effect on Canadian consumers and their attitude towards American goods.

It’s the same deal Trudeau had already agreed with Biden. Can$ is soaring!

HappyNewFeckingYear · 03/02/2025 22:27

Bet Trump made money on the markets today.

Yup. If he's truly backing down, Trump has gained diddly-squat but lost a lot of goodwill and hurt American businesses.

Does Trump think it was worth what he's lost with the way he has treated Canada?

What will the EU be thinking - and other countries that trade with the US?

Personally I think they would be looking for other more reliable partners and not having their eggs in a big basket

BruFord · 04/02/2025 00:01

Yup, breaking news this evening, he's paused the tariffs on both Canada and Mexico for a month.

From the BCC: "The cooling-down period comes after Mexico and Canada agreed to take measures to improve border security and clamp down on drug trafficking."

Not sure what's been agreed, but hey ho.

Basically everything that has been "agreed" by Canada was already announced back in December.

Can't help but notice that Trump caved within hours of Ontario cancelling one of Musk's contracts. Maybe Musk was unhappy and ordered Trump to stand down...

What century are you living in? My dh is native American (Sac and Fox) and has never lived in a "cage." He grew up in a 5 bedroom house in a nice suburb and has enjoyed all of the benefits of being an American, got a good education, a great job and together we raised two beautiful children "of color." Our son is a software engineer for a company whose name you would recognize and our daughter is a medical doctor. We are now comfortably retired. He has always enjoyed the same rights, freedoms, and responsibilities as every other American, and every other native American we know has a similar story.

BTW, according to the official exit poll, 65% of native Americans voted for Trump.

“BTW, according to the official exit poll, 65% of native Americans voted for Trump.”

Apparently not, it was a flawed exit poll. The last lot of numbers I could find re who voted for whom show that 57% of Native Americans voted Democrat - for Harris.
^^

  • Native American voters leaned Democratic in the 2024 elections, with 57% supporting Harris compared to 39% for Trump, while prioritizing tribal sovereignty, land rights, and cultural preservation as key voting issues.

@OneLemonDog Thanks, I saw a headline as I was heading out, need to read up on it.

Leilanii · 04/02/2025 01:53

I can't imagine Trump being 'ordered' by anyone and this is why I wonder how long his bromance with Musk is really likely to last. The man has a pathology which renders him incapable of being subordinate to anyone.

I think we’ll see a break up. Both Musk and Trump like to be top dog.

But it is not just Musk, it’s all of the Project 2025 people on his team. Vance et al. Even Trump’s Press Secretary is Project 25.

I’m wondering if they’ve worked out how to manage Trump.

I loathe Trump & all he stands for.
I wonder whether this will lead to his downfall - if he imposes tariffs on goods going into the USA surely that will be passed on to the consumers who will have to pay more for everything?
And if Canada & Mexico & Europe all combine together & act as one (imposing tarrifs against the USA or whatever) that's a lot of opposition & markets closing down

I just hope that UK politicians realise that the "special relationship" doesn't, & never has, exist in any way that is meaningful or useful & allies the UK with the EU
I'd like Starmer to do a speech along the lines of Hugh Grants in Love Actually to the sleazy US president

Edited

Do that and you will have a trade war and I'm hoping that Starmer keeps his mouth shut around Trump. Like him or not we do need to be in Trumps good books if we want any trade deals with the USA. Could always wait until Nigel gets in I suppose if Starmer blows our chances.

Turkeyneck101 · 04/02/2025 03:48

Just watched a report that Trump has asked for 'rare earth deal' with Ukraine in exchange for American support. This will provide lithium to the 'US' ....or more likely for Musks batteries.
Its actually ridiculous how easily Musk has grifted America to pay for his Mars and Tesla projects. Wonder if the backing down from Canada tarriffs has anything to do with Ontario threatening to pull the plug on the Starlink contract. 🤔

You have to hand it to Trump he has managed to get his base to support America being mugged off and grifted. 😃

BC's David Eby announced Starlink is no longer being considered.

It gets funnier, the Canada agreement was already agreed in December and funnier still Mexicos agreement with trump is LESS than the prior agreement...so 15000 troops down to 10000 troops to the border! Sheinbaum is just waiting to see how long it takes before they realise. 🤣 Of course the media aren't reporting it. 🙄

The US also gets free access to the Panama Canal, so the US already has pretty favourable terms with other countries. Panama would be within thrir rights to renege on that deal and start charging them.

We engineered and built the thing. Honestly we should never have given it away since we had made the agreement in support of Panamanian independence from Colombia.

Carter truly was the worst

Arguably the most successful con man of our time.

catmum44 · 04/02/2025 06:54

Mexico strengthened their border and took their criminals back so it worked and tariffs have been removed. Canada need to do the same and address cross border drugs trafficking. Then it will stop.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/02/2025 07:05

I wonder what the US plans on doing to stop the flow of firearms north? 🤔
