Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

He says it’s because of phen and illegal immigration - less than 1% come from Canada.

This will have significant implications for the Canadian economy, the American economy and by domino the world. Not to mention the fact it could start a significant trade war.

The US doesn’t subsidise Canada - they buy Canadian goods. Approx 40% of their crude oil comes from Canada for example.

There is also an agreed trade deal between the US/Canada and Mexico that Trump agreed to and signed in his first years in office.

YABU - it doesn’t matter to me
YANBU - let’s stand up to a bully and support our allies

But who designed the operating system on the device you are posting from? (Actually, I don't know, I know nothing about tech, but I bet there is a bunch of American technology that's gone into most devices). I don't think boycotts can work on the individual level.

You don't really "design" OSs. They are (almost) all predicated on the Von Neumann architecture that (almost) all computers are built to.

Windows and MacOS are 100% as US as Apple pie (see what I did there).

If you want a less US-centric experience then you could use Linux. That's "free" (so the Americans hate it) and globally used and supported. But since I know you won't, it would be a waste of typing to say more.

Android is derived from Linux (a long time ago) but Google have so wrapped the Playstore into it there's no mass alternative.

iOS is obviously proprietary Apple.

The UK used to have ARM which dominated the mobile scene. However one thing and another and we rather lost that. We're careless like that.

I listened to a book a few months back. Can't remember title or author unfortunately but it was very interesting.

Basically the premise was the the US is the only nation that can be truly self sufficient in the modern world as they have all the metals and minerals required for manufacturers without going to other countries. There were lots of other points too.

Basically we will have to go back to horses and ploughs and seasonally produced goods. And forget big pharma
And your meds

We do need the US

They may have the way but do they have the will, 41.2% of the U.S population are classed as obese, they rank number 10 in the world. UK is not great with 26% of the population classed as obese and we rank number 55 in the world. The real life ramifications of obesity are numerous health problems, so to be truly self sufficient you would need to address that first as you aren't going to have the workforce to fulfill the requirements of self sufficiency.

The Germans have a word for that.

Autarky.

There is definitely a mindset in America, which predates Trump's first term by many, many years that the US is the best country in the world and that everyone wants to live there. Which is why it's only recently that more Americans even have passports.

I certainly don’t think it’s the best country but it’s my country. Learn the difference.

Leilanii · 04/02/2025 12:56

Oh sorry @RingoJuice. I didn't realise that you speak on behalf of all Americans(!)

Sick of our politicians and media sucking up to this perverted creep.
Take a look at trump. Our version is reform.
We need somebody with backbone to call him out for what he is. Only a complete idiot would see this creep in a positive light.

I am speaking to this ‘mindset’ you referred to. Many of us love our country but recognize things could be better.

Personally I would be more concerned that all US citizen data is now being siphoned off by Musk and Mates. Which will make anonymity impossible, and put every American under the cosh of a "We know who you are and where you live" regime. Details that would have required a court order before will now be available to anyone Musk and Co ask to get them.

I suspect they are already sorting that data to start picking off the undesirables.

Remember that huge fuck-off database that NuLabour wanted to create under Blair ?

The USA will soon be getting musk's version of the Chinese social credit system or is that the Mickey mouse version?
He's gonna feed all that data into an algorithm isn't he and then decide that half the population needs to be fed into a sausage making machine because they are costing too much money and because they need cheap sausages.

And then complain that the sausage market has collapsed as the price plummets.

It's not quite Hanlons razor, as there is malice aplenty here. But I think we need to recognise - and reflect - that it is entirely being harnessed to advance the situation of Trump and his elk. Sadly, "the left" has rather caused the population to become inured to this behaviour by a little bit of "cry wolf" at shadows. Which enabled the real wolf to sneak past in plain sight.

Oh well, we all know how this gets solved. Whether we know it or not. We know.

It is just Trump posturing. That's apparently why they were penciled in for Tuesday. The US people think he is being tough and fighting for the US, but it gives Trump time to speak to Canada and Mexico and come up with a plan that suits both of them, before the deadline

Isinglass20 · 04/02/2025 14:56

The ‘deal’ Trump will push on UK could be US private healthcare companies to finish off the NHS and US beef so we buy US Ozembic (is that how it’s spelt?)

He’s doing a great job for USA people - on a blind test well over half of all brits said they really liked his policies! Until he hurts us I will continue to support USA 🇺🇸 🇬🇧

Is that like a blind taste test? Because I'm guessing the other half thought he tasted like rancid chili and sweaty socks

That great ally of ours called Mexico - don’t recall them standing by us in two world wars? Try boycotting china who regularly steal our intellectual property, who cyber attack our NHS, who suppprt Russia, who try and destabilise democratic nations, who have the world Covid.

Do you have a credible link to that test please? I have not heard this referenced anywhere and am skeptical about that level of support. Do you know how wide the pool of people questioned was? As in, did Fox News walk into a pub in Clacton and ask the clientele?

I looked it up. It seems to exist only in the Daily Mail, so I didn't click the link

At times like this, I reflect on the fact that were I to call myself a Christian - as a lot of US folk do - then I would start the day with a prayer from Psalm 109:8
