Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico

Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

He says it’s because of phen and illegal immigration - less than 1% come from Canada.

This will have significant implications for the Canadian economy, the American economy and by domino the world. Not to mention the fact it could start a significant trade war.

The US doesn’t subsidise Canada - they buy Canadian goods. Approx 40% of their crude oil comes from Canada for example.

There is also an agreed trade deal between the US/Canada and Mexico that Trump agreed to and signed in his first years in office.

YABU - it doesn’t matter to me
YANBU - let’s stand up to a bully and support our allies

No matter what happens if Trump drops any tariffs against Canada, he's damaged relationships between the 2 countries.

How many people will actively choose stuff from the USA if they have another choice from another country?

That wasn't the OP's question. The OP is asking people to boycott American exports because they are proposing a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico.

I will not boycott another country purely because of a proposed tariff.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

You have yours.

At what point would you boycott American goods?

You could have just said that then.

I just think YABU asking other countries to financially attack America.

But you think it's fine for America to do it to them and think they're mean for responding in kind. Righto.

No, thanks. It doesn't matter to me.

Oh but it will. It will when he expands this programme and since world economies are so entertwined it will
have a knock on effect. All top economists are saying so. It’s naive to think otherwise.
Also the attitude annoys me - WW2 was ‘nothing to do’ with Canadians and we sent thousands of troops and fought along side. We are a Commonwealth country, ally and friend.

Well yes, the Commonwealth mattered to the Mother Country for only a few decades following the end of WW2. That's when the UK cynically kicked her loyal allies into the gutter to go play with their new friends in Europe. The old Diggers who served with courage and loyalty their King and saw many fellow Aussies, Kiwis, Canuks die for Britain's cause, were heartbroken and disgusted by the betrayal. That's politics for you. But the old soldiers never forgave Britain.

Still not a troll.

I just don't agree with you trying to encourage people to financially attack another country.

You can't justify your OP. You can't argue your point. So you just shout 'troll'.

"financially attack another country" are you actually watching and reading the same news as most of the world!

Nothing will change here in the uk. 3 years after Russia invaded Ukraine you can still buy vodka in the supermarket.

The biggest selling vodka brand in the UK is made in Scotland. The only Russian made vodka I can think of is Russian Standard and I know some supermarkets boycotted it and then there was also a tariff of 35% put on it. I haven't seen it on a shelf for a long time

I think @Deljay makes a very good point. What ARE American goods? What does America provide to the EU and UK that we would genuinely struggle without?

Only goods I have an inclination to stop buying are from China but it is really hard 😂

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 03/02/2025 18:23

I think he may face a huge backlash from the US population when they see prices go up or availability restricted. It affects a lot of items…
What are tariffs and will prices rise? www.bbc.com/news/articles/cn93e12rypgo

The Mexican tariffs are now postponed as Mexico has made promises to President Trump.

So that worked.

Just waiting for Canada now.

Don’t they already have this?. Feels like a climb down by Trump which will look like a win to his base.

Justthistime1234 · 03/02/2025 19:24

It’s 10,000 troops, which doesn’t seem
that many for an entire border. The accusations made against Canada were lies - less than 1% of drugs and illegal immigrants into the US. Small actions add up. No holidays in the US (we were considering it), as few US purchases as possible. And I’ve sold my US shares in my pension and ISAs. That’s personal protection from the volatility and uncertainty he is single-handedly creating.

Parker231 · 03/02/2025 19:27

Trump is still blaming Canada for the trade deficit - apparently Canadian products aren’t needed by the US! He’s still going on about Canada becoming the 51st state - not a chance!

If Canada was a US state, Trump wouldn’t have got elected - he needs to be careful for what he wishes for.

I knew he was going to do this. Mexico does what they've been doing all along and he claims it as a win.

Stand firm Canada, please! Make him eat the fallout.

This article is from 2019 - Trump threatened tariffs then as well;

Updated: 06/07/2019 11:13 PM EDT

President Donald Trump on Friday [June 2019] dropped his unpopular plan to impose tariffs on hundreds of billion of dollars of goods from Mexico after the two countries reach a deal to stem the flow of Central American migrants entering the United States.

Trump said that Mexico had agreed to take “strong measures“ to address migration flows.

The previous deal obviously fell away with Covid and Biden.

Marka Zeloni used to be popular, too, but I've seen neither since this phase of the war started. Nemiroff is Ukrainian and Stolichnaya is Latvian.

Ponderingwindow · 03/02/2025 19:43

I’m an American who will be soon hit by the higher prices from these tariffs. It’s not like we have American made versions of all these products to buy as an alternative. This is simply a tax on the American people, most of whom are apparently too stupid to understand what is happening. I wouldn’t expect people outside our country to understand that we don’t have certain types of manufacturing or farming, but American citizens should know.

I would suggest that UK citizens should prioritize their own interests right now. Your economy has its own post-Brexit issues. Don’t make your lives more difficult to try to take a stand on this issue. It’s just not worth your sacrifice.

Absolutely. Two largest buyers of Californian wine? Canada and the UK. We can make a difference. And maybe don’t buy a Tesla…..

One of the biggest issues that Western Democracies face is the US repositioning itself as a foe, not a friend. Avoiding buying American goods or services, wherever possible, is in our interests.

Trudeau hasn't been been a loyal friend to the UK:

2017
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has taken a swipe at Britain over Brexit and argued the country is becoming increasingly inward-looking.

During a press conference in Dublin with Ireland’s newly elected Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, Mr Trudeau took aim at Britain and the US.

January 2024
“The [UK] government’s decision to walk away from trade talks aimed at enhancing the trading relationship between the UK and Canada would have been difficult, but it’s the right decision,”

“On products such as beef and cheese, Canada was demanding too much and offering too little, therefore preventing progress to the benefit of both countries.”

I don't see an issue with either of those.

He celebrated a trade deal with Ireland, noting that the US and the UK (large trading partners of Canada and Ireland, respectively) were turning inwards. That was a reasonable observation.

I'm not sure why Canada and the UK failing to reach a new trade deal means that Canada "isn't a loyal friend" to the UK any more than it means that the UK "isn't a loyal friend" to Canada.

Canada is a good ally of ours who has helped support us in our time of need.
We have more in common than divides us.
