Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico

Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

He says it’s because of phen and illegal immigration - less than 1% come from Canada.

This will have significant implications for the Canadian economy, the American economy and by domino the world. Not to mention the fact it could start a significant trade war.

The US doesn’t subsidise Canada - they buy Canadian goods. Approx 40% of their crude oil comes from Canada for example.

There is also an agreed trade deal between the US/Canada and Mexico that Trump agreed to and signed in his first years in office.

YABU - it doesn’t matter to me
YANBU - let’s stand up to a bully and support our allies

Do you live in Spain?

I do, this was hilarious. I hope when he bombs countries he doesn´t settle for a country that starts with the same letter as his real target...Spain or South Africa...Sibilants, must be the same place...

LastTrainsEast · 03/02/2025 15:53

The Mexican tariffs are now postponed as Mexico has made promises to President Trump.

So that worked.

Just waiting for Canada now.

user1484056932 · 03/02/2025 15:54

Mexico has caved to Trump demands, the Mexican president has agreed to supply 10,000 national guard at the US southern border & Trump has delayed tariffs for a month while they negotiate a deal between the two counties. The art of the deal, Canada will be next to cave. What a difference in leadership between America last Biden & America first Trump.

throwawayaway1 · 03/02/2025 15:54

I knew he was going to do this. Mexico does what they've been doing all along and he claims it as a win.

Stand firm Canada, please! Make him eat the fallout.

Yeah. Mexico fooled the giant orange buffoon by continuing to do what they've been doing since 2019. But lap it up.

Ironically a tactic finessed by our own 2019-2024 Tory government.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 03/02/2025 15:57

Hmmm I’ll have to look but I’m guessing that Biden didn’t exactly enforce the previous promise.

Sheinbaum blinked. Mexico had withdrawn those forces and now they're back.

Untrue. Mexico withdrew those troops when Biden got in. They've been moved back.

TopPocketFind · 03/02/2025 16:09

Trump blinked more

Part of the temporary deal just announced by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is that the US will work to stop the flow of firearms south into Mexico - a long-running issue that has been a focus for the Mexican government.

There's nothing for Canada to "cave" on (other than agreeing to become a US territory). Trump hasn't made any specific demands and the stuff he has been moaning about (fenatnyl and illegal immigrants crossing from Canada) are extremely minor problems that Canada had already offered to do more to tackle.

He just wants Canada.

LifeExperience · 03/02/2025 16:16

CanadaNotAMum · 03/02/2025 13:44

It’s not an offer, it’s a threat. This is him saying that he wants Canada’s resources and will take it by force if necessary.
And he doesn’t mean state like Hawaii, he means like a colony for resources where we wouldn’t have voting rights. Like Peurto Rico.

Puerto Rico is a drain on the US economy. It is not the 51st state because the Puerto Ricans have chosen not to be. They do this because if they became a state they would then have to pay federal taxes. Guam, Samoa etc. remain territories because they get all of the advantages of US citizenship without the taxes.

This is a problem in Canada, too.

Most if the problems with our shared border are to do with guns and drugs entering from the US.

HappyNewFeckingYear · 03/02/2025 16:27

Trump is more likely to want more something on the northern border of Canada. He briefly mentioned it a while back. Which will bring us back around to Greenland.

I believe he wants the US to create and then control the North West Passage.

The uk imports £111.5 billion from US

whilst we export £27 billion

which is why trump isn’t coming for uk yet

but how do you boy it £111.5 billion imports?

I thought it was more even that - and he has now said he wants a "better trade" deal with us.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3e1wnvkzeyo

Thing is though is your business relies on US imported parts - I image many supply chains are having a look round now seeing if somewhere else - ie rest of the globe - can be switched to just in case your government decides to apply retaliatory import taxes affecting your manufacturing costs. If trade sanctions drag on could hit American exports markets quite hard if rest of globe sees them as an expensive risk and pivots away.

Your President has financially attacked other countries, and his own country.

My country doesn't have a president. I am not American.

Not a troll.

I just think YABU asking other countries to financially attack America.

Can you not handle someone who disagrees with you?

How is this a troll comment? Trudeau lost all credibility when those pictures surfaced. Also the pompous moral high ground he likes to channel as he tries to shame the US in his little speech.

Are you uncomfortable supporting your racist PM?

Ok, let's rephrase it

Do you agree with that?

Grammarnut · 03/02/2025 17:35

Rainingalldayonmyhead · 03/02/2025 15:19

It’s like people can’t understand that the PANAMA canal runs right through wait for it …..the middle of the country of PANAMA. It’s the country of PANAMA that owns/runs it. Nothing to do with the US except they want to take it over and own it.

But Panama did not build it, the French and then the US did. But over a hundred years later both have got back the value of their investment and it belongs to Panama. It was handed to Panama in 1877 and is now run by a state-owned company (surprisingly sensible!). The US has now no claim to it, of course, because there is a treaty - treaties are meant to be kept, so Trump is flying a kite, as with Canada. The Canadians kicked the US out in 1812/14 and I doubt any want them back since they sacked York Town, now Toronto.
For a country that decries imperialism the US does like to spread its empire wide and is expansionist.

I just don't agree with you trying to encourage people to financially attack another country.

You can't justify your OP. You can't argue your point. So you just shout 'troll'.

That wasn't the OP's question. The OP is asking people to boycott American exports because they are proposing a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico.

I will not boycott another country purely because of a proposed tariff.
