Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico

Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

He says it’s because of phen and illegal immigration - less than 1% come from Canada.

This will have significant implications for the Canadian economy, the American economy and by domino the world. Not to mention the fact it could start a significant trade war.

The US doesn’t subsidise Canada - they buy Canadian goods. Approx 40% of their crude oil comes from Canada for example.

There is also an agreed trade deal between the US/Canada and Mexico that Trump agreed to and signed in his first years in office.

YABU - it doesn’t matter to me
YANBU - let’s stand up to a bully and support our allies

What I don't understand is how one man can have the power to instigate such massive decisions. Surely there is a team of economists and advisors and the decisions are made collectively? I mean, Trump is an idiot, in no way a good businessman let alone an economist, and mad to boot. How can he unilaterally make these decisions?!

That's the US system. It's not like an actual democracy, really, where there's a genuine balance of powers and independent judiciary, free press. It was always ripe for a nutcase to come along and exploit it to become a dictator to all intents and purposes unless if was reformed, and there was no reform and modernisation. Very sad state of affairs indeed for decent American people. Effectively the assumption implocit in their constitution - that nobody would even consider voting for a convicted felon - has been proved wrong. A lesson to us all. Make it watertight because hideous, power-hungry but unintelligent people do turn up witj alarming frequency. And voters who are dumb enough to support them.

Until the Canadian Government admit to the atrocities committed against indigenous people, right up to current times, and come clean about the boarding school murders and prosecute all those implicit in the taking, murdering and hiding of children, I don't give a toss what tariffs are places on their country.

You don’t think we’re working on it?

I'm Canadian, and while there will be some repercussions from this I don't think they will last, for a number of reasons. I'm not really convinced they are even intended to last.

I don't necessarily think though that the idea that it's "mean" to have tariffs is a very relevant argument, and I don't think it would be a good reason to want to punish the US as a matter of principle. If it were in fact a good thing for their economy in some way, protected jobs at home say, it's the job of the American government to seek the best interests of the American economy, not the Canadian economy.

Up until 5 minutes ago, much of the left were unsupportive of free trade, saw it as exploitative, and I do find it a bit odd that now it's considered immoral to do anything else? Does anyone remember the WTO protests?

Anyway, there have always been disputes abiyt US trade, notably over lumber and milk, because the US thinks the way we manage those is unfair - agreements like NAFTA really limit the degree to which a country can manage it's industries, which is something to think about - this includes supporting industries, environmental regulations, supply management, you name it.

In this case, Canada is going to retaliate, and it will all likely go to a negotiation fairly soon, IMO, with the Americans gunning for what they consider to be a better deal.

Trump is not a negotiating type of guy though. This is a power trip for him. Bullying his allies makes him feel good about himself, and his base eats it up. Negotiating would seem like he’s backing down, and that is not the image he wants.

Instead of just thinking where a good is made, consider where the money goes from the purchase. An iPhone might not be made in the US, but Apple is a US company and and that’s where the profits go. Same with anything sold on Amazon. Tge parent company is in the US.

I don't have an iPhone, I only buy the occasional CD/book from Amazon, often pre-loved. I really can't think of anything I buy, other than maybe some fruit, which comes from the US or a US company. I don't have a huge amount of tech stuff, and am not planning on buying any in the near future, so I will reiterate, I am struggling to think of any way I can contribute to not buying US goods.

Now if it was China (but then I would have to buy almost nothing!)

Trouble is American tech is everywhere. I don’t know much about websites and how they work but found an article with the CTO of MN (I think it’s Chief Technology Officer). The interview relates to Larsvel but also Google API (something to do with natural language processing)
Thiswas Aug 2024 so may not be accurate now but just an example

I like this thread but I have a hard time with constant putting down of Americans. I have no such feelings for your customs which people would find weird, don’t blame us for everything you don’t like. Don’t ever come here if you hate us so much. That’s what I get when I read all the post from mumsnet.

I think the general thought here is that the US is a wonderful place, as are its inhabitants - but Trump and his current actions are not.
