Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico

Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

He says it’s because of phen and illegal immigration - less than 1% come from Canada.

This will have significant implications for the Canadian economy, the American economy and by domino the world. Not to mention the fact it could start a significant trade war.

The US doesn’t subsidise Canada - they buy Canadian goods. Approx 40% of their crude oil comes from Canada for example.

There is also an agreed trade deal between the US/Canada and Mexico that Trump agreed to and signed in his first years in office.

YABU - it doesn’t matter to me
YANBU - let’s stand up to a bully and support our allies

I can't think what I buy that's from the U.S., apart from having a phone and a computer and using Google etc. that come on those.

I've always boycotted Starbucks, Macdonald's, Coca Cola, etc. for ethical reasons anyway (as have most people in my immediate friends and family).

Admittedly I did once give in to DC whining for sweets from one of those new places in Oxford St, but when I pointed out that the U.S. sweets probably aren't vegetarian and don't have high food safetyvstandards, they agreed to pop to the newsagents instead!

I did watch Netflix when someone shared their subscription with us during lockdowns.

Maybe shoes?

Alcohol is a good one if you drink.

@Rainingalldayonmyhead wines yes. Most of the beers are made here under license via InBev.

My small contribution has been never to buy foreign fresh produce (often US) when the Aussie stuff is out of season and never have since I moved here. NZ don't count as foreign in my book. Having said that, so much Aussie farmland has been bought up by China the whole thing is becoming a moot point.

I don't do the fast food places because I don't like the food so no moral high ground for me there.

Visiting Canada in the summer: had also planned a trip to the US whilst we are there (Vancouver - Seattle). Now planning to stay in Canada.

Prime Minister Trudeau response to the tariffs. You may not like him but it was a great speech.

Yeah call me crazy but I hold the opinion of someone who dresses in blackface for fun in very little regard.

I'm not in the UK but am struggling to think of any American made goods I could stop buying. I can't imagine there are lots in the UK either?

Oh, maybe the odd bit of fruit?

Amazon is the best target. It’s also a horrid company in general and encourages wasteful spending, so a goof target for reducing as much as possible.

I rarely buy from Amazon. Only the odd book or CD which I can't find anywhere else.

Instead of just thinking where a good is made, consider where the money goes from the purchase. An iPhone might not be made in the US, but Apple is a US company and and that’s where the profits go. Same with anything sold on Amazon. Tge parent company is in the US.

I'm Canadian, and while there will be some repercussions from this I don't think they will last, for a number of reasons. I'm not really convinced they are even intended to last.

I don't necessarily think though that the idea that it's "mean" to have tariffs is a very relevant argument, and I don't think it would be a good reason to want to punish the US as a matter of principle. If it were in fact a good thing for their economy in some way, protected jobs at home say, it's the job of the American government to seek the best interests of the American economy, not the Canadian economy.

Up until 5 minutes ago, much of the left were unsupportive of free trade, saw it as exploitative, and I do find it a bit odd that now it's considered immoral to do anything else? Does anyone remember the WTO protests?

Anyway, there have always been disputes abiyt US trade, notably over lumber and milk, because the US thinks the way we manage those is unfair - agreements like NAFTA really limit the degree to which a country can manage it's industries, which is something to think about - this includes supporting industries, environmental regulations, supply management, you name it.

In this case, Canada is going to retaliate, and it will all likely go to a negotiation fairly soon, IMO, with the Americans gunning for what they consider to be a better deal.

If a global trade war happens then it will absolutely affect you.

I think we are in for an actual war war. Trump has been open about making Canada the 51st state. Once Americans realize this week that “putting tariffs on Canada” is Trumpspeak for “a new consumer tax on Americans”, there will be chaos. . He will then declare martial law, either Vance or Musk will emerge as the person with the actual power, and we will see informal, militia style encroachments on towns on the Canadian side of the border. 80% of Canadians live within a 2 hour drive of the US border and the US, this is a very real threat.

Does Canada have any other markets for its stuff that it can just increase trade there?

Oh. If only they'd thought of that, huh?

Sounding a little like "Lord Frost" negoatiating Brexit.

Now, back in the real world...

I don't know....it's a mighty different country and a mighty different situation to those days I guess. When were they isolationist- are you talking about the 1920s/30s? I genuinely don't know much about this subject. It's an interesting intellectual exercise that Trump's playing with 250 million people. Presumably he has advisors who think that this is a sound long term economic move. Mind you, he also has advisors who believe that vaccines cause autism and that climate change is a hoax, so....🤷‍♀️

The US has 335 million people.

Echoing what others have said, what American goods? Electronics like iPhones aren’t made there. Bugger all is as far as I can make out. The only thing they seem to export now is films and tv programs.

What people should boycott is buying anything from companies that have their headquarters and pay corporation tax in the US.

LifeExperience · 03/02/2025 02:56

No problem boycotting Hollywood films if it helps. But retaliation is what creates a trade war. Free trade between Countries isn't an inherent right. It's always a negotiated situation and USA has elected a leader who wants to change that, that's their choice.
There's good reasons for free trade that are mutually beneficial to those Countries entering into it and consequences if you opt out. USA are going to find out what they are.
But no Country has a right to trade tariff free with any other Country. This is what is continually missed with critism of USA. Everyone always having a go at them saying it effects world events etc. Maybe they have stopped caring what other Countries say about them after years of abuse and ridicule.

We have.

Only have an opinion if you live in the United States of America. I would never think I knew how you live bc I don’t know you

I think it's really hard to boycott goods these days. Everything is everywhere. What ARE American goods? I can think of really... 90s things?

I guess it's Coca Cola and Pepsi, Levis, Disney, Mars, MacDonalds, KFC, etc, Nike, Starbucks. But a lot of that is brands, right? It's not really things they make. What do they actually make just them?

What about things like Google, Microsoft, Apple? Isn't it all made in China?

The UK imports a substantial amount of pharmaceuticals/medications from the US and an AI search tells me that half of the UK chemicals come from US.

I’ve wondered if some of that stuff comes from another country via the US to UK. (The US being the middleman). And would it be possible to cut out the middleman?

At any rate imports aren’t the just things people can choose to live without.

Devianinc · 03/02/2025 03:04

You all assume we Americans are wealthy and act like idiots. We don’t. We save for retirement just like you. I’m tired of seeing the crap over and over again how dumb we are. We’re just like you. We struggle just like you. We’re all the same guys.
