Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico

Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

He says it’s because of phen and illegal immigration - less than 1% come from Canada.

This will have significant implications for the Canadian economy, the American economy and by domino the world. Not to mention the fact it could start a significant trade war.

The US doesn’t subsidise Canada - they buy Canadian goods. Approx 40% of their crude oil comes from Canada for example.

There is also an agreed trade deal between the US/Canada and Mexico that Trump agreed to and signed in his first years in office.

YABU - it doesn’t matter to me
YANBU - let’s stand up to a bully and support our allies

They really are for the betterment for our country. They’re are way to many cronies going here so like every president they get the led out. For some reason for trump is a huge massive no no where it’s a common knowledge occurrence. Happens every new president.

Devianinc · 03/02/2025 04:37

Cleaning cabinets is what each term president does and maybe Biden didn’t make such an obvious front page decisions he did the same thing. Drump is just so verbal outspoken you actually know what he means. Biden is has been and has been for at least 2 years and we’ve seen some mighty old people promblems. He was becoming embarrassing.

But who will buy all the candy and unnatural coloured cereal in those American candy stores that were sprouting up everywhere a couple of years ago?

I think most of their sweets are repackaged fake stuff presumably manufactured somewhere a lot cheaper than the USA.

Ger1atricMillennial · 03/02/2025 06:01

I have been watching some content about tariffs and the way that Trump is using them.

Putting tariffs on foreign imports only hurts the US consumer, because its the importers that pay the tariffs which they then pass on to the consumer, not the place where the goods are sent from.

So in theory if they chuck a 20% tax on everything that comes from the Canada arbitrairly, it will be the consumers in the US that will pay the extra cost.As Canada produces the power that the northern US uses and they don't have the infrastructure (and land required) to compete with Canada then it drives up the price for US consumers only. If Canada chooses keeps their tariffs low, the US trade will want to trade with them because the demand will still be high as the cost to Canadians will be low.

I was thinking about coffee. The only place in the US that can grow coffee is Hawai'i. In 2023 they produces USD42.3million. The coffee market in the US is worth USD4.8billion. So if they slap a tariff on imports from Colombia/Brazil then the people paying for increase that is US Citizens. There are no other markets that can provide this much coffee so again it adds a cost only to US customers.

I wonder if that is how he is going to hang on to power. Bleed them dry, make them hate their neighbours so they worry so much about their day to day they don't pay attention to him becoming a dictator. Scary stuff.

The tune is British, but the lyrics written by a slave owning tyrant (francis scott key) who excoriated the slaves (in the no longer sung 3rd verse) for fleeing the plantations of washington et al. to join the British to gain their freedom should be booed regardless.

It's always surreal seeing a black person sing it (Whitney Houston once did). It's a slap in the face to their freedom seeking black ancestors.

I would be interested if they do. They seem to be pretty good at avoiding tax, and I don't have a problem of them employing people and giving them health insurance etc.

Because he's King. And not a modern day King like Charles. The Henry VIII type. With his court.

Not a bad shout that.

Arguably even worse given that tens of millions endorse his views given they elected him (not that the fast tracked, imposter Harris was any better).

The big, orange, insincere, atheist, racist, silver spoon reared chancer is capable of anything as he has legions of exceptionally backward, gullible followers.

He thought Spain was a BRICS country.

Did he really think Spain was part of BRIC - Good grief! Is there no end to his stupidity?!
BRIC, as I found out recently, stands for
Brazil, Russia,India,China
.
With regard to sanctioning - Russia seem to have managed quite well with replicating KFC, McDonalds - it can be done if there is the will for it.

No netflix, microsoft, apple, US tv & film, facebook, google, intel, amazon?

I don't think so.

Not one for boycotting anything (unless in rare circumstances such as the Afrikaaner Musk's racist South africa during apartheid) but a few of those would be easy.

Netflix, US tv, social media (including tiktok from China) and Amazon, rarely if ever use/consume any of those. Social media (platform for fake lives) has contributed zero to society except worsening mental health of young people (to echo Stephen Fry I'd ban it if I could). Haven't watched anything from US tv since I was a child (even Friends was shite). And online have usually ordered direct from a company or better still go to the actual shop (recently ordered a bike from Halfords, then collect at the store).

What I don't understand is how one man can have the power to instigate such massive decisions. Surely there is a team of economists and advisors and the decisions are made collectively? I mean, Trump is an idiot, in no way a good businessman let alone an economist, and mad to boot. How can he unilaterally make these decisions?!

Because anyone who doesn't agree with him gets fired

He surrounds himself with yes men

South Africa not America.

And he is gunning for us now.

He has already cut off USAID, which is affecting the poorest who need HIV and TB treatment. But this morning we got the news that he is cutting off all funding to SA, pending an investigation which relates to the land appropriation act. Bear in mind that Elon Musk and David Sacks are both hail from SA, and Theil from Namibia.

Our news is abuzz is all I can say.

Leilanii · 03/02/2025 07:40

Trump will no longer be popular with Americans when this hits them hard in the pocket, which it will.

cakeorwine · 03/02/2025 07:41

Devianinc · 03/02/2025 03:04

You all assume we Americans are wealthy and act like idiots. We don’t. We save for retirement just like you. I’m tired of seeing the crap over and over again how dumb we are. We’re just like you. We struggle just like you. We’re all the same guys.

I wonder how the US Stock Market will do today - it looks like the others went down by up to 2% last night.

I’d rather live here than any other place in the world. America is an awesome place to live. You can live your dreams if you want to. You just have to work for it. America is a beautiful continent. The beaches and mountains are breathtaking. I’m sorry you people hate us but that’s how I read about how you feel about us. I’m definitely denying hen doos, never ever ever happened in the USA. Sorry. So ick

I have no idea who you’re trying to reply to but you’re denying that hen dos happen in the US? A hen do is a bachelorette party ffs.

cakeorwine · 03/02/2025 07:48

Trump talks about the gap in trade - but he forgets the massive US service industry that we (and the EU consume).

The U.S. goods trade deficit with the European Union was $202.5 billion in 2022, a 7.3 percent decrease ($15.8 billion) over 2021.

The United States has a services trade surplus of an estimated $71.2 billion with the European Union in 2022

https://ustr.gov/countries-regions/europe-middle-east/europe/european-union

Countries consume a lot of US services - and the US consumes a lot of foreign trade.

European Union

Give up my Hershey bars?

Oh huge loss (do they even sell those here?). Their *chocolate is almost as crap as their cars. And their derivative biscuits, Oreos, good grief.

*aware Mars is a US brand, but most of the good stuff was created by workers in Slough, or are derived from earlier products (M&M from Smarties).

notacooldad · 03/02/2025 08:00

No, thanks. It doesn't matter to me.
What about if/when Trump applies tariffs to the UK?
This is exactly right!!
Who will support us ,if we don't support others when they need help?

HappyNewFeckingYear · 03/02/2025 08:05

We in the UK might not need tariffs, as we can be worked on.
Guess that means US meat and other stuff.

What does America make or mine that is unique? Does the rest of the world have to trade with it?

Rainingalldayonmyhead · 03/02/2025 08:08

LifeExperience · 03/02/2025 02:56

We have.

There was a free trade agreement that Trump renegotiated because he didn’t like the last one (NAFTA - North American free trade agreement). This was only a few years ago in his first term and it was agreed and signed by him Canada and Mexico. This is the point. He has basically ripped it up again.

I wonder how many people realise that their pension funds, savngs etc are tied up in the economy and the Stock Market.

The UK stock market, like others, is falling today.

Wall Street opens soon.

America isn’t a continent. North America is a continent which is comprised of Canada, the US and Mexico. Please tell me you knew that or that your wilful ignorance was to make a point.

Yes the US is a beautiful country and I hate to break it to you everything you have said is equally true about Canada.

I don’t hate America or Americans at all. I haven’t been disparaging or negative toward the people or the country at all (including hen dos????!.

This is about your President being a bully toward its long standing peaceful neighbour and ally to the North.
