Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico

Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

He says it’s because of phen and illegal immigration - less than 1% come from Canada.

This will have significant implications for the Canadian economy, the American economy and by domino the world. Not to mention the fact it could start a significant trade war.

The US doesn’t subsidise Canada - they buy Canadian goods. Approx 40% of their crude oil comes from Canada for example.

There is also an agreed trade deal between the US/Canada and Mexico that Trump agreed to and signed in his first years in office.

YABU - it doesn’t matter to me
YANBU - let’s stand up to a bully and support our allies

You present yourself to a border officer at an official point of entry so you can be processed and screened properly. It really isn’t hard.

Dover beach by a dinghy is not an official point of entry.

And how do you persuade an airline or a ferry company to sell you a ticket or accept you on board without the appropriate visa and/or a valid passport?

You really haven't thought this through properly have you @Potsofpetals ?

So Trump has said he’s going to impose substantial tariffs on the EU….he’s probably including the U.K. in that. Because the EU won’t accept American cars! 😁. There is no reason, he can’t blame the eu for Mexican immigrants or fentanyl so it’s all about the cars. Don’t we have Fords? Pretty sure they’re American? 🤷‍♀️

Ford stopped manufacturing the Fiesta in 2023 and the Focus this year, with nothing to replace them. So there will have been a drop in sales.

@DoubleDoubleDown thank you for the biscuit information.

How long did Trump's TikTok ban last?

Right up to when Jeff Yass offered to help him buy the presidency.

Has Trump ever been rude about other world leaders?

Do you think anyone is going to give two shits about a few mumsnetters cancelling prime! It’s embarrassing to read.
You don’t like Trump, it wouldn’t matter what he introduced! I doubt he loses any sleep over a few lefties throwing a tantrum (again)

I am neutral on Trump’s presidency, he does have a lot of good ideas, and we could do with some of their vigour and enthusiasm for creating wealth and prosperity!

Look at what our bumbling fools in government are doing, why don’t you consider that Reeves is busy crashing the economy, taking us back to the 70s - and you have your fingers in your ears and tin hats on, screaming blue murder over the politics of another country. It’s pathetic.

Not everyone who agrees with Trump is a leftie, you know.

what is he on about? that's like me saying I should own sainsburys because I buy my groceries from them. Does he even know what subsidy means ?

Well I'm not sure he knows how tariffs work.

That’s not the UKs fault 😁. There’s still a Ford dealership up the road selling new Fords. They must have enough models left to need a garage.

Looks like you need to change the law again and stop sacrificing innocent people for your ‘values’.

Who’s getting sacrificed?

You can claim asylum legally though I accept for some it’s impossible. There are people who come here on planes with passports and visas and then claim asylum. But I agree that for many that’s not going to be possible.

How long did Trump's TikTok ban last?

Saw an interview with him the other day where he’s considering options on tiktok. He said tiktok is worth “a trillion dollars”, and that half of their worth is thanks to the usa. So they can pay him half of a trillion dollars and he’ll let them carry on. If they don’t pay he won’t let them and then they’ll be “worthless”.

Not sure where firstly he gets the “trillion dollars” figure from or secondly why he thinks they owe half their worth to the USA!

It's a tad ironic that trump was the one in his first term who wanted rid of tiktok.

Then he 'saved' it from being removed in his second term.

Now so long as he gets paid those security concerns disappear.

Magic, amazing what a trillion dollars can do.

If someone ten years ago was to write a book/make a film about a character like Trump (a serious film/book I mean 😉) most people would dismiss it as highly entertaining fiction, and dismiss all the scenarios introduced by the protagonist as unreal and unbelievable in real life.

Does it matter ?

Populism isn't driven by facts and data. It's driven by feelz. Look at Brexit - the template for populism Trump and co. have aped.

When the cold air of reality hit the delusions, it wasn't "Oh dear, we may have been wrong". It was "Damn those pesky remainers and their mass of support".

If Trump sat in a chair, commanding the tide to go out, and go wet feet, MAGA would simply tweet out that the ocean had gone woke and hordes of believers would descend on the shores with assault rifles to teach it a lesson. How dare the sea go woke.

They did. It was called "The Apprentice, US".

All laid out there.

How do you know a White House fact (under Trump) is a fact and not a lie?

I guess that's the age old question for any information source, including our own government. They refer to it as a "fact sheet" and I imagine the figures given are all being scrutinised by opponents as we speak.

I was just trying to point out what seems to be missing from a lot of news articles about this is that they are clearly admitting it is about leverage with the countries bordering them to take some action on those issues, and not about a desire to start a trade war.

Mexican president Sheinbaum herself has said since she took office in October they had seized 20million doses of fentanyl and detained 10,000 people in relation to drug trafficking.

Hopefully if that continues the tariffs will return to more favourable numbers (or free again).

OneLemonDog · 02/02/2025 18:49

Thanks to those showing solidarity with those of us in Canada.

Trump is going to let Russia have its way with Europe, and try to have the US absorb the rest of North America.

Hopefully they can get rid of him in 4 years but lord knows. Scary times right now.

Oh and it's obviously not about Fentanyl - significantly less than 1% of Fentanyl in the US enters via Canada. We have bigger problems with illegal guns entering from the US. If Trump had genuine concerns he wanted to address, he'd (1) take Trudeau's calls, and (2) lay out demands.

Chersfrozenface · 02/02/2025 18:51

Canada? Solidarity?

Per BBC News

"Negotiations between the UK and Canada on a post-Brexit trade deal have broken down after nearly two years, following a row over beef and cheese.

Canada has been pushing for the UK to relax a ban on hormone-treated beef, which its producers say in effect shuts them out of the British market.

The UK have concerns about 245% import taxes Canada put at the start of the year on British cheese."

The cheapest brand new Ford is the Puma from £26k. Gone are any new Fiesta and Ka models, Focus soon to be gone. Fiestas started at about £22k. Nothing apart from the Puma to replace them. I assume they aren't bothered w8sh selling small cars any more.

Trump will just blame Biden, Obama, the EU, Canada, Mexico, EDI, essentially anyone or anything except him.

Bizarre really. Love my old Focus. Gave it to dh and it’s still going strong.

You have to give it to Trump for being talented and ambitious; it takes a special kind of talent to bankrupt a casino and now his ambition is to bankrupt the world's largest economy.

So because the two countries haven't been able to come to terms on a new expanded trade deal (on top of the existing trade arrangements), its a "fuck you" from you, is it?
