Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico

Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

He says it’s because of phen and illegal immigration - less than 1% come from Canada.

This will have significant implications for the Canadian economy, the American economy and by domino the world. Not to mention the fact it could start a significant trade war.

The US doesn’t subsidise Canada - they buy Canadian goods. Approx 40% of their crude oil comes from Canada for example.

There is also an agreed trade deal between the US/Canada and Mexico that Trump agreed to and signed in his first years in office.

YABU - it doesn’t matter to me
YANBU - let’s stand up to a bully and support our allies

No, I didn't. Maybe you are dizzy from saying bully a thousand times?

No perfectly fine but thanks for the insult. No wonder Trump sits well with you.

A survey by the University of Chicago, external in September 2024 asked a group of respected economists whether they agreed with the statement that "imposing tariffs results in a substantial portion of the tariffs being borne by consumers of the country that enacts the tariffs, through price increases". Only 2% disagreed.

Give up my Hershey bars?

Why not try chocolate as a substitute?

Livelovebehappy · 02/02/2025 16:28

We stick our noses into enough issues happening outside the UK. Just leave them to it. Canada and Mexico are already putting something in place to go up against what Trumps doing. Let them get on with it. But of course, if you feel strongly about it, then go ahead and boycott.

Livelovebehappy · 02/02/2025 16:31

Rainingalldayonmyhead · 02/02/2025 15:39

And you don’t think that Canadas biggest ally the US? Much more pronounced, dependant and stronger than the US and the UK. You honestly think Trump gives a monkey about the special relationship? Try again.

Well we can cross that bridge then when (if) it happens, can’t we?

SerendipityJane · 02/02/2025 16:34

We stick our noses into enough issues happening outside the UK.

The problem is - and maybe this is the wellsping of anti globalisation and the sentiment that propelled Brexit (in vain- is that because we live in a hyper connected world, then events in another country can have immediate and far-reaching consequences elsewhere.

Going back to the days of horse and before telegraphy, what happened half a globe away could take years to have any effect elsewhere. Years in which the effects were smoothed by the actions of time and travel.

However, in 2025 we live in a world where a decision taken in Washington DC could see our cost of living crisis escalate within days, if not hours.

To quote Tolkien "It does not do to leave a dragon out of your calculations if you happen to live next to one".

With that in mind, it would be more unusual if UK citizens were not interested in happenings in the US.

@Potsofpetals
Q) What are the legal routes to claim asylum in the UK if you're not from Ukraine or Hong Kong?
A) There aren't any.

Get your facts right instead of spreading misinformation.

Upstartled · 02/02/2025 16:45

To quote Tolkien "It does not do to leave a dragon out of your calculations if you happen to live next to one".

Perhaps, though, he imagined a response that was a little more robust than swapping out your bottle of Blossom Hill and cutting back on Amazon purchases?

How long did Trump's TikTok ban last?

It’s laughable you think the US gives a shit about tiny old UK😂Also Trump says he thinks Starmer is doing a great job- not that any of us should care what Trump thinks.

Haha. This. Anyone who thought there ever was a 'special relationship ' between the US and UK is delusional. Unless by special they mean we (the UK) tow the line with the USA and they do exactly what suits them.

AllFurCoatAndFrillyKnickers · 02/02/2025 16:49

@Potsofpetals
You can't get on a plane, ferry or train to the UK from many countries without a VISA. So if you're in can't get here then you can't legally claim asylum.
The UK has clear rules for VISAs eg if you're from Eritrean (in Africa) you would need to get a VISA (business or tourist) before you are able to board a flight. Do you think most Eritreans could get one?

vandel · 02/02/2025 16:52

Visas and often passports are irrelevant if claiming asylum. Asylum is a legal concept agreed under various Conventions here there and yonder. Of course a person can claim asylum without a visa, that is usually the whole point.

If you read the fact sheet released by the white house it makes more reference to the use of tariffs as leverage to force action against drugs entering the US, specifically fentanyl which is considered a public health emergency.
It also states that it will remain in effect until this is controlled. Rather than it being to generate revenue or increase inflation.

Canada has been identified as having labs producing fentanyl and China as providing the precursors for production.

How do you know a White House fact (under Trump) is a fact and not a lie?

whydoihavetowork · 02/02/2025 16:55

I am on some Disney forums and have noticed a few Canadians cancelling their trips the past couple of days.

The only thing I can think I regularly see from the is in UK is cosmetics/ shampoo etc. pretty sure even the beer brands are actually brewed here under license.

LakieLady · 02/02/2025 13:24

He wasn't an illegal immigrant, he was an asylum seeker.

Entering the UK to claim asylum is not against the law.

Looks like you need to change the law again and stop sacrificing innocent people for your ‘values’.

AllFurCoatAndFrillyKnickers · 02/02/2025 16:54

How do you know a White House fact (under Trump) is a fact and not a lie?

More to the point, is what does it matter ?

We've already seen the fermenting of an environment in which facts are dismissed over "what people feel". And currently, it seems in the US for a lot of folk, "facts" are what people are told they are, rather than anything based in objective reality.

As I say, when the US starts to feel inflation bite, when the grocery bills go up, the ready programmed MAGA maniacs will simply parrot that's it's all the fault of Biden and DEI as they praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.

We've seen it in a small scale here in the UK (which is possibly how they knew it would word in the US) where our own completely shit Brexit deal is not Boris Johnson and the Tories fault. Oh, no. It's "the remainers" who were somehow mysteriously able to operate in the shadows despite parliament having a majority Tory government.

vandel · 02/02/2025 17:02

I think the UK might need to re-establish really good relations with the EU now.

I'm not talking about overturning a democratic vote for Brexit, just a bit more diplomacy in the interests of lots of things that affect our lives. I'd be looking East not West, and "Be closer to Berlin than Boston".

Do you think anyone is going to give two shits about a few mumsnetters cancelling prime! It’s embarrassing to read.
You don’t like Trump, it wouldn’t matter what he introduced! I doubt he loses any sleep over a few lefties throwing a tantrum (again)

I am neutral on Trump’s presidency, he does have a lot of good ideas, and we could do with some of their vigour and enthusiasm for creating wealth and prosperity!

Look at what our bumbling fools in government are doing, why don’t you consider that Reeves is busy crashing the economy, taking us back to the 70s - and you have your fingers in your ears and tin hats on, screaming blue murder over the politics of another country. It’s pathetic.

I wouldnt get too excited by trumps policies...the only pockets he is lining are his own and his big tech bros. The average man of the street will be shit upon from a great height.
Project 2025 will remove workers rights, no unions, no overtime and effectively will ensure every company manager can come in and decimate their workers without a bye or leave. As for women they may as well get their pinnies and slippers on and tug their foredeck to their lord and master husband. Mumsnet would not exist.

They are firing all the feral workers on a whim because they aren't staunchly pro trump...as someone said ...they are getting rid of the witnesses to his treachery.

They are removing the education department, removing black history and now they are apparently shutting down pubmed and access to free research. Some research is having their funding removed including childhood cancer research.

He doesnt give one fig about Americans. The reason he was voted in in the first place was vast numbers of his voters had no clear insight into what they were voting for...no wonder he 'loves the uneducated'. I honestly believe he is a hairs breadth away from being the German chancellor of the 1930s/40s and nothing, nothing is worth having that as a leader.

Upstartled · 02/02/2025 17:11

It seems like it's more on the level of materials, right? It's like crude oil, or lumber. I'm just not personally buying much crude oil, so a consumer boycott won't have teeth. If Apple actually starts making everything in California then maybe I can get a Samsung next time, but is this likely? I'm not sure. Maybe!

I think we have to act at the level of trade blocs.

Apple has headquarters, stores, us employees. Of course it's American, and global as well.

Parker231 · 02/02/2025 17:14

Lots of comments on X from Americans saying that they don’t need any Canadian products. Most US oil refineries are designed specifically to process Canadian products, which would make changing supply sources complex and costly. A figure of (the equivalent of) 40p a gallon increase to consumers from the tariff- that won’t go down well with the American market

AllFurCoatAndFrillyKnickers · 02/02/2025 17:15

And Musk and Trump haven't been interfering in our politics? Remember the petition to get Keir Starmer to resign and hold another General Election?
