Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico

Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

He says it’s because of phen and illegal immigration - less than 1% come from Canada.

This will have significant implications for the Canadian economy, the American economy and by domino the world. Not to mention the fact it could start a significant trade war.

The US doesn’t subsidise Canada - they buy Canadian goods. Approx 40% of their crude oil comes from Canada for example.

There is also an agreed trade deal between the US/Canada and Mexico that Trump agreed to and signed in his first years in office.

YABU - it doesn’t matter to me
YANBU - let’s stand up to a bully and support our allies

So we need to cut out Amazon, Facebook, stop buying Apple products, (read recently theyre not that great anyway)....and if you have the money not buy a Tesla...also hope that all countries tax the hell out of Tesla cars. 🙏

Edited

Youre right, that’s not realistic at all.

But just because you can’t do everything, doesn’t mean you can’t do something.

Yup. Even in Canada, what I expect to be doing is avoiding American products where there's a non-American alternative. Avoiding everything US-owned would be extremely difficult and hopefully we don't get to the point where that's needed....(although who knows, we might be US-owned before too long....)

BuoyOhBuoy · 02/02/2025 19:49

I've met some oil which was perfectly civilised!
Why does Mumsnet always have to refer to it as crude!

(Misses the point of the thread).

It's this comment from Trump that would really piss me off I was Canadian.

Can you imagine what would happen if he said this about the UK?

"We pay hundreds of Billions of Dollars to SUBSIDIZE Canada. Why? There is no reason. We don’t need anything they have. We have unlimited Energy, should make our own Cars, and have more Lumber than we can ever use. Without this massive subsidy, Canada ceases to exist as a viable Country. Harsh but true! Therefore, Canada should become our Cherished 51st State. Much lower taxes, and far better military protection for the people of Canada — AND NO TARIFFS!

We live in Canada - and can almost laugh at how stupid Trump is. We have no intention of ever becoming another US state.
I’m (almost) hoping that electricity to the US is turned off and that they realise they can’t cope without goods from Canada and other countries. They are less self sufficient than they realise.

You can't rule out, though, the prospect of a US invasion if we withhold energy.

Trump might well be trying to engineer an excuse.

seriouslyfunny · 02/02/2025 20:07

I do think we need to be more careful about how we consume although we don't need to be perfect. I have cut down on using amazon including replacing my kindle with a non amazon competitor, and I use independent rather than starbucks. I love frappachinos but I just don't want my money going to them. Is it a drop in the ocean but I still feel like I am doing something!

cakeorwine · 02/02/2025 20:30

More from Trump

"“The USA has major deficits with Canada, Mexico, and China (and almost all countries!), owes 36 Trillion Dollars, and we’re not going to be the ‘Stupid Country’ any longer,” he wrote. “MAKE YOUR PRODUCT IN THE USA AND THERE ARE NO TARIFFS!” "

And what happens to those products that the USA produce to other countries?

If people stop buying them, then US exports reduce and that impacts US companies that export.

I really think you should add a domestic tariff to the energy you send there. Might focus minds, and I imagine can be sold elsewhere. Trump says they don't need it so it will be fine....

I'd like Starmer to do a speech along the lines of Hugh Grants in Love Actually to the sleazy US president

Should be good - he's had five years of coaching!

Sir Keir Starmer relied for five years on an actress and communications skills coach to improve his public speaking and interview performances, a new book has revealed.

Stock Markets will be opening later

Technology stocks are expected to be hit, and the US’s Nasdaq index is on track to fall by 1.4% at the start of trading on Monday, according to IG. The official futures market opens on Sunday evening.
The Dow Jones index of 30 large US companies looked likely to fall by 0.8%, while the UK’s FTSE 100, which ended last week at a record high, was on track for a 0.7% drop.

The IG analyst Tony Sycamore said: “The surprise for markets today isn’t so much Trump’s tariff announcements – largely as flagged. It’s that Canada and Mexico retaliated immediately and that others, ie China and the EU, may follow their lead, resulting in a sharp contraction in global trade.”

Agree. I'd like to think Musk's current antics will mean Tesla will absolutely sink as a company.

Because the alternative is that people buying Teslas are happy to line the pockets of a Nazi (and broadcast the fact)...

That was a very good speech. Reminding Americans of the times that Canadians have fought side by side with them.

As President John F. Kennedy said many years ago, geography has made us neighbours. History has made us friends, economics has made us partners and necessity has made us allies.

That rang true for many decades prior to President Kennedy’s time in office, and in the decades since, from the beaches of Normandy to the mountains of the Korean Peninsula, from the fields of Flanders to the streets of Kandahar, we have fought and died alongside you during your darkest hours during the Iranian hostage crisis. Those 444 days, we worked around the clock from our embassy to get your innocent compatriots home.

During the summer of 2005, when Hurricane Katrina ravaged your great city of New Orleans, or mere weeks ago when we sent water bombers to tackle the wildfires in California. During the day, the world stood still, Sept. 11, 2001, when we provided refuge to stranded passengers and planes. We were always there, standing with you, grieving with you. The American people.
Together, we’ve built the most successful economic, military and security partnership the world has ever seen. A relationship that has been the envy of the world.

Yes, we’ve had our differences in the past, but we’ve always found a way to get past them. As I’ve said before, if President Trump wants to usher in a new golden age for the United States, the better path is to partner with Canada, not to punish us.

I can't believe the Prime Minister of one of our closest allies has had to make that speech in response to the actions of another of our closest allies.

I think its naieve to continue to consider the US a close ally, at this point.

Superb speech. The contrast between Trudeau and Trump is very evident. One a statesman the other a mad megolomaniac puppet.

What the heck are we going to do, it's quite unnerving how quickly long held alliances are deteriorating. It seems to be minute by minute now.

Thank you for putting the words from the speech here. Now that’s a statesman.
