Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico

Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

He says it’s because of phen and illegal immigration - less than 1% come from Canada.

This will have significant implications for the Canadian economy, the American economy and by domino the world. Not to mention the fact it could start a significant trade war.

The US doesn’t subsidise Canada - they buy Canadian goods. Approx 40% of their crude oil comes from Canada for example.

There is also an agreed trade deal between the US/Canada and Mexico that Trump agreed to and signed in his first years in office.

YABU - it doesn’t matter to me
YANBU - let’s stand up to a bully and support our allies

Back on topic… yeah not sure a Canadian or UK boycott will do much good but hey it’s worth a try.

cakeorwine · 02/02/2025 15:01

Then there's this:

"We pay hundreds of Billions of Dollars to SUBSIDIZE Canada. Why? There is no reason. We don’t need anything they have. We have unlimited Energy, should make our own Cars, and have more Lumber than we can ever use. Without this massive subsidy, Canada ceases to exist as a viable Country. Harsh but true! Therefore, Canada should become our Cherished 51st State. Much lower taxes, and far better military protection for the people of Canada — AND NO TARIFFS!"

flapjackfairy · 02/02/2025 15:10

what is he on about? that's like me saying I should own sainsburys because I buy my groceries from them. Does he even know what subsidy means ?

Phineyj · 02/02/2025 15:12

The Canadians (well, the government of Ontario) built an entire state of the art hospital in my borough during WW1 (to treat the soldiers they had to bring back from the Western Front) and donated it to the area at the end of the war. The borough has numerous grave markers for Canadians in their late teens and early twenties who didn't make it back.

Many people aren't aware what a close relationship it was.

This is from the US Government website

"U.S. goods and services trade with Canada totaled an estimated $908.9 billion in 2022. Exports were $427.7 billion; imports were $481.2 billion. The U.S. goods and services trade deficit with Canada was $53.5 billion in 2022."

@cakeorwine
Thanks that is interesting reading.
in my mind a subsidy is something someone gives you to benefit you and at a cost to.themselves but in the case of the US and Canada what Trump means by a subsidy is actually a trade deficit primarily caused by the supply of oil . The US are not handing over billions to Canada free and gratis but are buying essential fuel that it relies upon and which it would struggle to.supply for itself.
Is that the gist ?

Daisychainsforme · 02/02/2025 12:22

@Rainingalldayonmyhead I will be checking very carefully where my goods come from now

Well I'm glad you have the time.

I'm more concerned with helping elderly relatives now they've had their Winter Fuel Payment taken off them and working out if I can afford to take any staff on now that I have to pay extra for NI and wages etc etc🙄

Thanks for the passive aggressive. You may want to hold your hat because when Trump does the same to the EU and the UK you will be worrying far more about the winter fuel allowance and NI payments because this has the real potential to push the world into a recession, So maybe you will have the time to worry about it then?

The US is our biggest ally. They protect us economically and militarily. Just because you don’t like trump is no reason to boycott them. They buy 15% of our goods and services. They have 13 military bases and over 10,000 soldiers in the UK. we should be improving our relationship with our greatest ally, not destroying it.

Basically.

The USA buys more from Canada than it sells to the USA.

Of course the US could make those things itself or source them itself. But that takes time and could prove to be more expensive.

Canada in the meantime will set up trading arrangements with other countries who are more reliable. And will do just fine as it has products other countries need.

The Tax Foundation estimates that the Trump tariffs could effectively be a tax of $830 a year on the average U.S. household.

You do realise that Trump will be targetting the UK as well with tariffs because Musk does not like the regulations over social media that are coming.

The US is our biggest ally, and you think it’s a good idea to get into a spat that has nothing to do with us?! It’s honestly a ridiculous suggestion, and will lead to a serious fracture in our relationship with them, which is under enough strain as it is because of Starmer and Lammy.

Edited

And you don’t think that Canadas biggest ally the US? Much more pronounced, dependant and stronger than the US and the UK. You honestly think Trump gives a monkey about the special relationship? Try again.

I can tell you one thing, he certainly won’t care about it we boycott them…

This is so naive. Canada and the US have been staunch allies forever, have a more pronounced relationship and have always been strong. Trump doesn’t care about any relationship. That’s the point. He won’t protect you economically if it doesn’t suit him. Militarily - look at his stance on NATO etc.

Your comment would be very valid and apply to any other president. This guy could give a monkeys about the UK economically or militarily if it doesn’t suit him.

Where would you draw a line on this support? Re gaza? Tariffs? Ukraine? 51st state comments? Power and control?

How far would you go?

It’s laughable you think the US gives a shit about tiny old UK😂Also Trump says he thinks Starmer is doing a great job- not that any of us should care what Trump thinks.

Upstartled · 02/02/2025 15:47

So, we should both boycott American goods to stick it to Trump and we are not important enough for the US to care about good relations? Must be hard riding two horses.

Turkeyneck101 · 02/02/2025 15:49

So we need to cut out Amazon, Facebook, stop buying Apple products, (read recently theyre not that great anyway)....and if you have the money not buy a Tesla...also hope that all countries tax the hell out of Tesla cars. 🙏

Do you think anyone is going to give two shits about a few mumsnetters cancelling prime! It’s embarrassing to read.
You don’t like Trump, it wouldn’t matter what he introduced! I doubt he loses any sleep over a few lefties throwing a tantrum (again)

I am neutral on Trump’s presidency, he does have a lot of good ideas, and we could do with some of their vigour and enthusiasm for creating wealth and prosperity!

Look at what our bumbling fools in government are doing, why don’t you consider that Reeves is busy crashing the economy, taking us back to the 70s - and you have your fingers in your ears and tin hats on, screaming blue murder over the politics of another country. It’s pathetic.

Sorry what? No I don’t like anyone who acts like a megalomaniac no. I didn’t vote Labour so what are you on about?

This is about standing up to a bully. Like the man or be neutral but he’s a bully.

Its isn’t about them giving two shits about a few mumsnetters boycotting it’s about standing up to a bully.

I’ll use an analogy that might appeal to you. It’s kinda like when Churchill stood up to Hitler and the Canadians fought alongside their allies and friends to do so without ever having to. Because it was the right thing.

You can like the man or his ideas - I really don’t care. Americans can do what they like, but this is bullying their small peace loving neighbour to the north. That’s the point.

No the UK- inst important to Trump not because of it being the UK- or being smaller it’s because it’s any other country than the US. I think you missed the point.

Oh! He has several.

Although falling out with the Americans and the Scots could be a poor move I suppose.

How come Trump didn't build the wall and get the Mexicans to pay for it like he promised last time?
