DH’s credit card bill half his monthly wages

Byteatreeoil · 29/01/2025 22:05

My DH takes home about £4500 every month. However each month his credit card bill is over £2000 pounds. AIBU to want to know what this money is being spent on. I know there is usually some genuine household expenditure on his credit card but nowhere near as much as the bill. He stopped receiving paper statements years ago so I have no idea where most of this money is being spent on.

I would say so long as he's paying his share if the bills and savings you've agreed together it's up to him what he spends discretionary income on.

My oh doesn't get to see my cc bill and I don't see his

comedycentral · 29/01/2025 22:10

Does he charge all month to his CC then pay it back on payday? Do you suspect he might be gambling or have an addiction? It might be worth trying to have an open chat together about finances.

I put absolutely everything on my credit card and can easily rack up £2k a month but pay it off in full every month

Same here. Most of the household spending is done on my credit card.

Yup me too. And before anyone thinks I'm living the life of riley, at least half of it is supermarket shopping, petrol and DD's parentpay.

OnTheBoardwalk · 29/01/2025 22:15

Does he pay it all off? My credit card statement is around £2k but as other posters have said i charge absolutely everything to it and pay it all off at the end of the month

what else do you think is on there?

Byteatreeoil · 29/01/2025 22:16

So we have a joint account and we agreed to share all our finances when we got together. So in effect he has a separate account by default as he does charge various things on his credit card throughout the month and then it comes out of our joint account when he pays the CC bill.

Drugs?

mynameiscalypso · 29/01/2025 22:17

I earn similar and my credit card bill each month is normally about the same, or sometimes higher. I transfer money to the joint account for my share of the bills and all my other spending is on my card, paid off in full every month.

I have no idea, but don't you buy drugs with cash? Do they take credit cards?!

RedRiverShore5 · 29/01/2025 22:19

£2k is not unusual for a credit card that has all the expenditures and then paid off each month, mine is about that as I get the food shops with it and everything else

AdoraBell · 29/01/2025 22:19

Find out what he is spending on.

Pigeonqueen · 29/01/2025 22:20

If it’s not household spending he’s paying off every month then it’s a lot of money! 😳

😂 those dealers gotta move this the times.

But seriously, no, drug dealers don’t take card payments.

febmayjune87 · 29/01/2025 22:22

Dh and I put all spending possible on credit cards and then pay it off every month. We get points rewards which really add up

On his credit card??

Yes?

Byteatreeoil · 29/01/2025 22:23

The household spending comes out of our joint account, where all our money goes in.

Use the card to get cash out

Apparently they do according to my son. Some have card machines 😮

VotingForYourself · 29/01/2025 22:24

Is he "out with the lads" a lot? Strip clubs take card too

It's a cashless society

fivechairs · 29/01/2025 22:26

Am I misunderstanding OP? He spends £2k every month then pays it off out of the joint account?
Or he has a card with around £2k balance and pays the bill (£100 ish?) each month out of the joint account?

DH and I have joint finances, all our wages are paid into the joint account and all bills and any social thing we do together comes out of that joint account. However, we both also believe it's important to also have some personal financial freedom, so every month we have £300 each that gets transferred into our individual personal accounts to do with as we please. Maybe you need to do something like that so that if it's a personal credit card and you have no knowledge or control of what he's spending it on, he can pay it off out of his personal allowance.

I am not sure....can voting for myself give me their dealers number?

Pallisers · 29/01/2025 22:28

If he was paying it with what he has left after paying his share of the bills, I'd be curious and would hope he'd tell me (why wouldn't he) . But if he is paying it out of the joint account - that's your money too. Ask him for a copy of the bill you are spending your money on.
