DH’s credit card bill half his monthly wages

Byteatreeoil · 29/01/2025 22:05

My DH takes home about £4500 every month. However each month his credit card bill is over £2000 pounds. AIBU to want to know what this money is being spent on. I know there is usually some genuine household expenditure on his credit card but nowhere near as much as the bill. He stopped receiving paper statements years ago so I have no idea where most of this money is being spent on.

Yes he spends over 2k each month and pays it all from the joint account!

Apparently they do according to my son. Some have card machines 😮

Really??? Hard to pretend you’re not a drug dealer when you get arrested if there are loads of card payments from your customers. Sounds like a poor strategy to me.

NoOneKnowsWhoYouAre · 29/01/2025 22:31

There is no way my husband or I would take £2k out of the joint account each month that the other didn't have a solid idea of what it was spent on.

I'd change your financial arrangements.

Needanewnameidea · 29/01/2025 22:32

Perfectly reasonable to want to see the bill if you’re pooling all money and have joint finances - my DH and I only have a joint account and joint money and yes, I expect to see what’s on his credit card bill if I ask. I don’t usually ask, because it’s almost certainly petrol, groceries, kids clothes, the annual holiday, stuff for the house, car related stuff, school lunches, kids activities, insurances, subscriptions and other ordinary things - we put everything on the card then pay it off each month, might as well get the points. If those things are being paid from elsewhere then I think it’s completely fair to ask what he is spending on, presumably just for himself.

Lilyhatesjaz · 29/01/2025 22:32

Also if drug dealers took card payments, wouldn't the tax office want to know where the money was coming from?

Certainly seems like an unnecessary paper trail.

Deeperthantheocean · 29/01/2025 22:35

My DH earns a good wage but has big credit card debts, which are for expensive hobbies like motorbikes, having the best walking gear and so many bloody gadgets! Xx

I assume your joint account isn't going overdrawn each month so effectively £2k of what should be going into your savings is being spent by him on who knows what? No I would not be happy.

Does he have expensive hobbies? Go out a lot after work? Expensive tastes in clothes etc? Do you think it could be drink, drugs, gambling, strippers?

Where I live they take bank transfers and everything! Madness!! Not heard of them having card readers though.. mind you you can use your phone as a card reader now (found that out in our local tea room!!! About the phone not the bank transfer for Colombian marching powder like!)

Deeperthantheocean · 29/01/2025 22:36

I would possibly also look into gambling. Xx

VotingForYourself · 29/01/2025 22:37

Start taking the same out for yourself?

Quitelikeit · 29/01/2025 22:37

Does he get avios for using the CC?

if not I find this very suspicious

a recent report said if you think your husband is up to no good look at his financials - he is hiding his from you

Cynic17 · 29/01/2025 22:37

Why on earth is the OP looking at her husband's private credit card bill?

Could be a sideline alongside a legit business. Declared as additional income to the business and paid tax on.

She sees the amount being transferred out of their joint account she doesn't see the bill

Yup

Why on earth is the OP looking at her husband's private credit card bill?

Because they've agreed to share finances and he's spending £2k of what should be their money on his own non household spending.

Catsbreakfast · 29/01/2025 22:40

comedycentral · 29/01/2025 22:10

Does he charge all month to his CC then pay it back on payday? Do you suspect he might be gambling or have an addiction? It might be worth trying to have an open chat together about finances.

You can’t spend money gambling on a credit card just fyi. He could technically walk into a shop with money withrdawn from
a card, but online it’s not possible.

CharlieUniformNovemberTangoYankee · 29/01/2025 22:41

Not a chance in hell would my husband be taking £2k a month out of our joint account unless I knew exactly what it was for.

BMW6 · 29/01/2025 22:42

Well as he's not getting paper statements he must have am account online that he can call up and you can look at.

Bloody right I'd want to see WTF he's spending such large amounts every month!

TheQuirkyMaker · 29/01/2025 22:45

I'm confused as to why so many people use credit cards. If someone spends only half their monthly earnings, and pay off the balance each month, why not just use a debit card instead of a credit card? We use debit cards, and put the surplus into our own high interest savings accounts.

Lost589 · 29/01/2025 22:45

Is he bringing back any shopping regularly? Clothes, suits, hobbies?

Is he the type to get suckered into online trading?

PrimitivePerson · 29/01/2025 22:46

JaceLancs · 29/01/2025 22:12

I put absolutely everything on my credit card and can easily rack up £2k a month but pay it off in full every month

Yup, I have two cards that both earn cashback, so I use them for pretty much everything, and it makes everything fractionally cheaper.

BagGreen24 · 29/01/2025 22:47

I'd be concerned he had a secret life/ another woman and was using it to fund that. No way would DH take 2k out of joint account without me knowing exactly where it was going.

It is not private if being paid off from joint funds. Or should not be anyway.
