Spaghetti is the default pasta

RawBloomers · 26/01/2025 20:44

My DH asked me what I’d like to eat and I said pasta and pasta sauce. I was picturing spaghetti with a lovely tomato and basil sauce, generously sprinkled with black pepper and parmesan. This is also DC1’s favourite meal.

Spaghetti is the default pasta and should be assumed if no particular type of pasta is mentioned. AIBU?

He has made a mix of penne pasta and macaroni. And put sausage in the sauce. I want to pout and stamp my feet like a four year old. (I have not I have thanked him and told him how lovely he is).

There is plenty of spaghetti in the cupboard. We only have penne in because they had no spaghetti in the shop once, months ago. We only have macaroni in because DC2 likes mac&cheese and I make it - for them alone - from time to time. He made this penne/macaroni monstrosity for me and DC1 as DC2 has already eaten and he had something different. He and all right thinking people should know better, right?

Rigatoni
Spirali
Penne
Farfalle in a cold pasta salad

Not a fan of spaghetti or macaroni
And never tagliatelle (there's a story that you don't want to know )

I want to know! 😁

Default in our house is penne. DH made bolognese the other day but didn’t do spaghetti - he finds it a pain to eat. He makes a lovely sausage pasta which has become a staple family meal.

Solow12 · 27/01/2025 08:59

YABU, OP.
Penne is the default. Although recently I’ve been using a ton of fusilli quick cook pasta for DC’s lunches.
I have to admit I have been forced to mix pasta types, but it was a desperate situation and I’m not proud of myself.
I do, however, happily mix wholewheat and white pasta.

Unrelated38 · 27/01/2025 09:08

I don't think we even have spaghetti in. Spirals are our default. Fresh tagliatelle for special. Sounds like her was trying to use up ods and ends.

Macaroni is only for mac and cheese though and is not the same as all other pasta.

You sound like my MIL. Even the 6 year old rolls his eyes at her.

In my day spaghetti came in a tin and we ate spuds every day like normal people.

MoneySpell · 27/01/2025 09:14

YABU. There is no default!

CherryMarigold · 27/01/2025 09:16

Asking for pasta with pasta sauce is sooo vague, it could be almost anything.
It's like going to a bar asking for "a drink" and being disappointed when instead or a Long Island iced tea they give you a pint of Guinness.

Penne or Fusilli are default for me.
I don't really like spaghetti unless it's chopped up and it doesn't fit it the cupboard. DC love it though.

Butteredtoast55 · 27/01/2025 09:24

Fusilli is our default with spaghetti or linguine just for specific recipes.
In extremis I did once make pennaroni cheese but otherwise mixing pastas is WRONG!

HereBeWormholes · 27/01/2025 09:33

People don't really seem to care that much about pasta, do they... 😉

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 27/01/2025 09:36

Penne/Fusilli is default pasta to me.
Spaghetti is specified, usually with bolognaise.
Macaroni is for macaroni cheese
Lasagna is a separate dish

mrsm43s · 27/01/2025 09:51

"Pasta" would be penne or fusilli by default.

Other pastas,e.g. spaghetti, macaroni, tagliatelle, orzo, rigatoni etc would be referred to by name.

So "pasta and sauce" would be penne or fusilli, whichever we have in, but Spaghetti Carbonara would obviously be spaghetti, Linguine with garlic butter prawns would obviously be linguine etc

Every day goes by and I think - surely we've run out of things to talk about on MN. And yet here we are.

Nothing to do with the thread, but my son created Wooden Overcoats (and played Dr Edgeware) and my daughter in law played Antigone Funn!

PlantsHaveTakenOverMyHome · 27/01/2025 10:08

And spaghetti is spaghetti and default pasta is fusilli here. Unless I absent mindedly pick up the wrong bag without realising it. This kind of occurrence happens more often than it should.

AntigoneFunn · 27/01/2025 10:11

@PlantsHaveTakenOverMyHome How absolutely wonderful! I think it is probably my favourite podcast/drama/comedy of all time. Please do pass along my fangirling; your son is very talented -they all are- and Antigone is a fantastic character!

Vermerling · 27/01/2025 10:16

Default in our house is also penne. Why would be obvious to anyone with young children incapable of eating tidily.

Pamelaaaaarrr · 27/01/2025 10:26

If you ask for pasta in our house, you get penne.

Spaghetti is a category of its own.

PlantsHaveTakenOverMyHome · 27/01/2025 10:31

@AntigoneFunn Thank you, I shall! I know I may be just the teensiest bit biased, but they are both pretty amazing people. 😘

Now that is fabulous! I feel like she could be Madeleine in witch form!

FrangipaniBlue · 27/01/2025 12:26

Absolutely not.

If you say "pasta" you get whatever is in the pasta box (could be penne, could be fusili).

If you want spaghetti you must specify, spaghetti.

Thems the rules in the Frangipani household.

FrangipaniBlue · 27/01/2025 12:26

Ditto macaroni - only to be used in macaroni cheese.

Does anyone remember the April fools joke on News at Ten
They reported to have discovered that spaghetti grew on trees. My dad had never eaten it and believed them 😳🥴

That is so wonderful to see again.
Although it was on the news in the 70s when we saw it as I’m not that old 😁

Thankyou for posting
