Spaghetti is the default pasta

RawBloomers · 26/01/2025 20:44

My DH asked me what I’d like to eat and I said pasta and pasta sauce. I was picturing spaghetti with a lovely tomato and basil sauce, generously sprinkled with black pepper and parmesan. This is also DC1’s favourite meal.

Spaghetti is the default pasta and should be assumed if no particular type of pasta is mentioned. AIBU?

He has made a mix of penne pasta and macaroni. And put sausage in the sauce. I want to pout and stamp my feet like a four year old. (I have not I have thanked him and told him how lovely he is).

There is plenty of spaghetti in the cupboard. We only have penne in because they had no spaghetti in the shop once, months ago. We only have macaroni in because DC2 likes mac&cheese and I make it - for them alone - from time to time. He made this penne/macaroni monstrosity for me and DC1 as DC2 has already eaten and he had something different. He and all right thinking people should know better, right?

Not even spag bol is made with spaghetti in our house (I prefer linguine) so I think YABU. Default here is fusilli, but I normally have a good variety of shapes in the cupboard.

Oh, god no. Spaghetti is the devil's pasta. Totally pointless. Messy to eat and never tastes good unless it's fresh.

I grant you that a mix of pasta types is weird. But he gets full credit for avoiding spaghetti.

It also reminds me hideously of worms. Just can't unsee it.

FreshAirForwards · 26/01/2025 22:49

Pappardelle! The king of pasta.

solvendie · 26/01/2025 22:50

Penne or Fusilli is the basic pasta for our family - it has ore versatility than spaghetti

liveforsummer · 26/01/2025 22:50

Nope - spaghetti is specified. I agree it's the best (along with linguine) but needs a complimentary sauce. Fusilli is default in my mind although we prefer spiralli. 100% agree that macaroni only has one use though and that's with cheese sauce!

Cyclebabble · 26/01/2025 22:52

No I do not think there is a default pasta, I think you need to specify. In our house tagliatelle and fusilli are used more than spaghetti. I know it sounds somewhat lazy but fusilli is easier to eat.

TempestTost · 26/01/2025 22:54

I would say spaghetti or the spirals.

Not penne. It is the Worst Pasta.

My husband really likes it, which I did not know before I married him.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 26/01/2025 22:55

Sorry but you're wrong there. Spaghetti is always specified (spaghetti bolognese, spaghetti vongole etc) but if it's just a general pasta meal eg tuna pasta bake it's normally pasta spirals, but could also be penne or another type of short pasta.

Gifu · 26/01/2025 22:55

Hard disagree, OP.

"Pasta and pasta sauce" = tubes, shells, bows, spirals, etc (just one type, obv not mixed together).

If you want spaghetti or macaroni you have to specify.

pontipinemum · 26/01/2025 22:56

Conchiglie is my favourite but not our default as DH isn't a big fan. Default here is also penne.

I never use spaghetti and it does not belong with Bolognese

WhatterySquash · 26/01/2025 22:56

I agree spaghetti is the generic default pasta, but it’s not what I like most, though I do use it for bolognaise. If I lived alone I’d default to tagliatelle. But my DC think of penne as the default, weirdos. Get through sacks of it. Can’t be doing with it, takes ages to cook and annoying to eat.

M&S do a squiggly one that’s like a fusili that’s falling apart. I really like those

BeaAndBen · 26/01/2025 22:56

YABU - as any fule kno, spaghetti is mentioned by name if it's going to be served - spag bol, for example.

Rigatoni and penne are default, tagliatelle if we're out of them, linguine for a handful of recipes, orzo for soup or a risotto substitute, macaroni also for soup or for macaroni and cheese, conchigle for creamy blue cheese sauce with broccoli, everything else as suits one's whim.

HereForTheAnimals · 26/01/2025 22:57

It's fusilli in our house.

If you tell us what the word for a single strand of spaghetti is you will have made this thread actually worth something and not just a whinge by a petulant wife!

The word for a single spaghetti is ……..

a spaghetto 😃. You’re welcome. ☺️

Thereislightattheendofthetunnel · 26/01/2025 23:00

VoltaireMittyDream · 26/01/2025 20:57

Fusilli is the default here.
Spaghetti impossible to eat gracefully
Penne must be the ridged penne - smooth ones always make me imagine I’m eating the blood vessels of a very large animal - no idea where I got this idea from but it’s ruined countless pasta bakes for me 🤢

Now mine too 🤣

JoelyJoe · 26/01/2025 23:00

spaghetti with bolognese or meatballs... fusilli or penne with everything else...

liveforsummer · 26/01/2025 23:00

Globusmedia · 26/01/2025 21:11

Spaghetti is the most specific pasta! If I said 'pasta' I would never ever mean spaghetti.

Penne and fusilli are definitely the basics, they have the biggest sections in the supermarket.

And are the ones sold in giant bags!

WhatterySquash · 26/01/2025 23:01

TempestTost · 26/01/2025 22:54

Penne is basic and annoying but my most loathed is bloody farfalle/bows. The bit in the middle takes longer to cook so you get either underdone middles or overdone floppy flanges. They look crap too, half-arsed and namby pamby.

it’s amazing how much difference the shape can make to eating the exact same food, now I think about it.

CobraChicken · 26/01/2025 23:01

GoodOlePolariod · 26/01/2025 20:46

Default here is fusili .

Same! I will sometimes even use it when I'm making "spaghetti" bolognese or "macaroni" cheese.

The only pasta dish where spaghetti is sacred, in our household, is spaghetti and meatballs 😄

merrymelodies · 26/01/2025 23:02

I prefer linguine to spaghetti but I'll eat any pasta as long as it's al dente.

coralsky · 26/01/2025 23:04

Penne In my house. Only use spaghetti for carbonara or meatballs.

coralsky · 26/01/2025 23:05

Mixing pasta shapes is pure mental though

Fluff111 · 26/01/2025 23:05

Linguine for bolognaise, slightly thicker than spaghetti but not as heavy as tagliatelle. And no, never mix pastas in the same meal. Just wrong
