‘Jane’ is 5’7” and is wearing an XS/S etc
what the fuck has her height got to do with her dress size? On Oh Polly this was also on a bikini top! How does this help??

Oh, I love it when websites do this. It helps when buying clothes as presents for my daughters.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 26/01/2025 18:56

I think it's so if you're shorter/taller you can see how the length will land. Bikini tops as well if you're super tall they don't always fit 'right' so it's good to try and work it out from model height.

Whiskeywithwater · 26/01/2025 18:56

But height makes no difference! I’m the same height as my daughter .. she wears a size 8, I wear a 12

Catza · 26/01/2025 18:57

It does help me a lot, actually. Because I can see if someone is similar height and size to me and go from there. If you ever let ok at the back of a packet of tights, you'll see that changes in height will shift the size you need even if your waist measurements stay the same. Same goes for leggings and stretchy pants.

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/01/2025 18:57

Of course it helps.

If I like something's length and it turns out it will be scraping the floor on me, I don't buy it.

thehorsesareallidiots · 26/01/2025 18:58

Height and size helps hugely when assessing something to buy online.

chattyness · 26/01/2025 18:58

I find it helpful too

Ot course it does, it's the length.

RaininSummer · 26/01/2025 18:58

I need the height thing as if a dress is below the knee on their tallish model, it will likely be down to my ankles.

SophiaSW1 · 26/01/2025 18:58

I love it when it says the model's height!

Of course height makes a difference, if the dress is trailing on the floor when Jane wears it then as a 5ft woman i know not to buy it.

ThoroughlyModernNotMillie · 26/01/2025 19:00

I think it's useful. If you're tall you are probably wearing a larger size but are still looking slim, whereas if you're short you're more likely to wear a much smaller size to look as slim. It gives an indication of the garment sizing, if it's cut big or small etc.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 26/01/2025 19:00

But it's not just about whether it physically fits around you. Hard to tell how long something (not a bikini, admittedly) will be on you, or how it will look on someone your height, if you don't know how tall the model is. In any case, I don't understand why it would be actively annoying!

In a bikini top?

It does though. A model of 5’10 is going to have a larger frame than little me. So she might be wearing a 10 which fits and I’m slightly bigger, but much smaller, so the same size will fit me.

JC03745 · 26/01/2025 19:00

But height makes no difference!
What a ridiculous response OP! 😂

If someone is 4ft something or 6ft something, the clothes will of course hang to a different length- even swimwear!

Completelyjo · 26/01/2025 19:01

Whiskeywithwater · 26/01/2025 19:00

In a bikini top?

The listing will just include it for every item though since they have the models info. It would be pointless to exclude it.

GirlInTheDryShirt · 26/01/2025 19:01

I know some quite short women who are carrying a good amount of excess weight who are a size 10 simply because they have a small frame. The same amount of excess weight on a six foot woman would make her a solid size 14. That’s why it’s useful to know the height and dress size of the model when you’re trying to work out what size you should order…

Westiegirl3 · 26/01/2025 19:01

I find the height of the model so important, I'm particular in lengths of skirts and dresses so it's really useful info.

Agreed. It helps to work out how it will sit on a 5ft 2 body

LogicalImpossibility · 26/01/2025 19:03

A taller model will need longer and often wider set bikini straps. So a woman a foot shorter but the same dress size would probably find the straps far too long and possibly too wide set - it’s useful information.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 26/01/2025 19:04

Of course height makes a difference to where a lot of clothing will sit, especially things like a dress or a coat or skirt but even with tops it’s good to know how long it’s likely to be based on height. If you’re 5’2 and a 12 clothes will fit you very differently to somebody who is 6’2 and also a 12! Obviously with some clothes the difference in how the clothes fit will be greater than other, it’s probably more relevant for a dress than a bikini top but still may be useful to some people and I expect the website just give the same info for all garments. It’s not like having the info there causes a problem for anybody, even if 99% of people don’t find it useful it’s not causing an issue so if you don’t care just don’t read the caption under the photo or read it, dismiss it and move on.

Zae134 · 26/01/2025 19:04

I actually really like this (sorry). I like knowing how the length will look, I realise this was a bikini top but it's probably just policy to add it to every item. If anything, I wish more places would do it.
My bug bear is when they show an item on a model, but you can't really see the item under all the layers. Trying to buy trousers when the model's got a top and hoodie over the waistband (so I can't see height, fit etc.).

Of course height makes a difference. I always put mine in reviews as I'm five foot one. If something is the right length for me, it usually isn't for someone of average height and vice versa.

Onetimeonly2024 · 26/01/2025 19:05

“Sizing” in the uk is frankly, made up. I can buy a 10 in one thing from a brand and it’s tiny, buy a 10 in the same brand in a different item and it would fit me and my whole family. The “size guides” are shite too. I know full well how big my bust, waist and hips are but the “correct size” as recommended, is never the correct bloody size! And the “height” thing never works either. Apparently said model is the same dress size as me, but one inch taller. But said dress would show my arse whilst hers is a very respectable mid knee? I just order 2 sizes in everything and send back what doesn’t fit (which is most of it!)
