‘Jane’ is 5’7” and is wearing an XS/S etc
what the fuck has her height got to do with her dress size? On Oh Polly this was also on a bikini top! How does this help??

It’s helpful to know the models height to judge the length and shape the item would have on me.

WednesdaysChild25 · 26/01/2025 22:19

It’s super useful to me, especially when buying trousers, jeans, etc because I’m short arse

CheshireCats · 26/01/2025 22:20

Knew op would be a "average height " where all garments pretty much fit lengthwise/sleeve length/waist in right place/v necks not nearly down to her waist....
No idea that for short/tall people it is far from straightforward to get clothes that fit...
The height of the model is very important to me- it helps me see (for instance) if a jumper is a cropped length on a 5ft 7 model and therefore will probably be waist length on me. Or if a jumper is longline on the model, in which case it will swamp me and be more like a dress.
Or if a too has a deep v neck on said model- in which case it will be indecent on me.... etc, etc.
Height of model is vital info.

CheshireCats · 26/01/2025 22:23

@BeanAround Yes! I have the opposite problem with bras as a super shortie! Underband down to my waist if i'm not careful what style I buy and shoulder straps often don't shorten enough and hang off me.

Boutonnière · 26/01/2025 22:26

A couple of seasons ago, Seasalt showed some of their dresses on two different sized models - it was really interesting to see how the same style sat on what looked like a 8/10 and a 16/18 ( they didn’t specify the sizes and didn’t draw attention to the feature ) They seem to have dropped it now, though.

SharpOpalNewt · 26/01/2025 22:26

It helps if there are a few models in different sizes and heights and there is one who is a similar size and height. And age. It doesn't particularly help me when there is one model only who is about 19 years old, wearing a size 6 and is 5'10".

WonderingWanda · 26/01/2025 22:27

Whiskeywithwater · 26/01/2025 18:56

But height makes no difference! I’m the same height as my daughter .. she wears a size 8, I wear a 12

It helps you work out where the skirt or trousers might reach on your own legs. Then the size I guess is so you can gauge whether you will look similar or smaller , larger than the model. It's really useful because at 5"8' I can struggle with skirt lengths.

Fizbosshoes · 26/01/2025 22:29

MrsMoastyToasty · 26/01/2025 19:35

It's even worse when clothing is described as "short", "medium" and "long". I just want to know the inside leg or skirt length in inches and/or centimetres.

M&S thinks short people are under 5ft 8in tall going by current offerings.
(When they used to provide trouser lengths in inches I knew that a 29in inside leg would fit - because my legs are 29in long!. Now you have to take a stab at the length).

I'm less than 5ft which I accept is really short. M and S "short" jeans are about 5" too long for me.
One of the models for New look petite range is 5ft 5" (which imo isn't petite!)

Screamingabdabz · 26/01/2025 22:31

The more information the better when they use tall thin models. I find review photos actually the most helpful even when they’re a completely body type - you can see how it hangs on real people with a bust, hips and in normal light.

LillyPJ · 26/01/2025 22:32

Knowing the height really helps. It's about proportion.

Suzuki76 · 26/01/2025 22:39

I don't understand how OP is not grasping that the info here is:

This is a woman. You can see her build. She is wearing a 10 so if you are similar build but your boobs are bigger you need a 12.

This woman is also 5ft9 and the dress is knee length on her so if you are 5ft1 it'll be mid calf.

Scentsitive · 26/01/2025 22:39

Whiskeywithwater · 26/01/2025 22:08

But that’s the point .. it doesn’t mention what dress size she is! Only her height. Obviously (& I’m using Oh Polly as my example here), the models are uber slim. But they could be a 6 or an 8 or a 10 - I don’t know. So whether it’s an XS or S is a bit meaningless, as it doesn’t relate to her dress size

The brand's sizing guide will tell you what dress size XS/S/M/whatever is equivalent to.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 26/01/2025 22:43

If course height makes a difference on how things fit. You don't really think someone who's 5ft and a size 8 looks the same as someone who's size 8 & 6ft 2? The proportions are completely different.
Look at the pictures in Uniqlo for example, they show different body types and heights to give a true representation of how clothes will fit.

As Scensitive has said, you can check the size chart on the website to see the equivalent.

I mean, you're on your own with this. The vast majority of people find it useful, so you do you - just ignore all of the extra information and order whatever size you assume is going to fit you. People who do appreciate the info can take it on board.

endlesscraziness · 26/01/2025 22:47

It makes a huge difference. I'm 5'10" if the model is 5'1" clearly it won't fit me as it'll be too short in the arms, legs and torso

But is an XS a 6, an 8 .. or what? And how does whether she’s a 6,8 or 10 relate to her height?
Honestly everyone - you’re all getting a lot more het about it than I am! I’m mildly irritated by it - perhaps Hate in my OP was a bit strong. Everyone in my house was watching football and I was a bit bored. I’m not losing sleep over it
and as I said, I’m actually not nit picking - I said much earlier on that I was happy to accept it’s just me! Chill out all

5.6 - so not particularly tall or short. So what I’m saying is that looking at a dress, I get the thing that people are saying about length .. but actually often the length isn’t much different whether it’s an XS/S/M/L - so what’s even the point of mentioning what size they’re wearing?? My weight fluctuates- I’ve been an 8, I’ve been a 14. So my wardrobe reflects this. I’ve got a couple of dresses in a size 10/12 & 14. They’re not different lengths - they’re just wider!

Exactly what I was expecting you to say. Your tallish so probably rarely have an issue with the length of a garment.

If your short dresses 👗 the lenght from shoulders to waist can be too long, so it land on your hips, rather than where its meant to be.
Sometimes short women look and thing that's knee length on her 5ft 7 body so it will be 5-6 in longer on my 5ft body some of her height will be neck and head.

BashfulClam · 26/01/2025 23:03

I’m 5’9” so I need the model
height to judge from where it sits on her if it will be too short (in most cases, why do they keep making clothes for borrowers!). This is really important for tops, jeans, underwear, dresses, skirts…

😆 Borrowers
I'd say they make dresses for giants.

Far too long from shoulders to waist - if its really fitted waist lands on your hips and you've zero chance of getting that zip up. Or you pull the waist up to fit in the right place making the top part baggy.

The fitted part often hits me on the ribs. Far too short. I went shopping for trousers cane back grumpy and husband asked how I got on, I said ‘is everyone in this fucking town a midget?!’ All there were were petite sizes….i’m 5 inches too tall for petite, or standard which I’m at least 2 inches too tall for. I tried on about a dozen pair of standard length which it me above the ankle!

CharlotteStreetW1 · 26/01/2025 23:16

I'm just over 5'4". I've bought a few "mini" dresses from Monsoon on the basis that if the model is 5'9" + then the dress will be knee length on me (which is what I want).

Disturbia81 · 26/01/2025 23:19

ThoroughlyModernNotMillie · 26/01/2025 19:00

I think it's useful. If you're tall you are probably wearing a larger size but are still looking slim, whereas if you're short you're more likely to wear a much smaller size to look as slim. It gives an indication of the garment sizing, if it's cut big or small etc.

This.
I'm a size 12, my short friend is a size 10 but she's much more overweight than me. Height makes a difference to everything.

Sorry but I can't help but laugh because it's the exact opposite problem.

The reason it was the petite sizes left is because all the other giants got there before you 😜

So conclusion clothes are made to fit women 5ft 6 or 7 any bigger or smaller your goosed!

Men who are probably in charge of the chain store stock don't have a clue how hard it actually is. Men's trousers 👖 come in actual waist sizes and actual leg lengths.

Can I add a rant about M&S school trousers
Sold by age, but come in slim fit (not the same as slim leg) standard & plus fit. They also come in standard and longer lengths.

Seriously what is the difference between an age 10 slim fit and age 9 longer length 🤔
