‘Jane’ is 5’7” and is wearing an XS/S etc
what the fuck has her height got to do with her dress size? On Oh Polly this was also on a bikini top! How does this help??

😆 Borrowers
I'd say they make dresses for giants.

Far too long from shoulders to waist - if its really fitted waist lands on your hips and you've zero chance of getting that zip up. Or you pull the waist up to fit in the right place making the top part baggy.

As a tall person I think that the norm has definitely shifted towards clothes for giants! In my teens (about thirty years ago!!) I used to have to buy everything from Long Tall Sally or the few 'tall' ranges on the high street to stand a chance of anything fitting properly. These days there's more tall offerings on the high street and I occasionally manage to buy trousers that fit from standard ranges which used to be unheard of.

I also think fashion changes have been helpful for taller people - high waisted trousers, ankle grazer trousers and midaxi dresses are all more forgiving on a taller frame. E.g. a midi/midaxi dress can sit anywhere from ankle length to just below the knee and still look OK.

OP they are two separate pieces of information, her height and her size. They aren't supposed to relate to each other.

If you don't know what size xs, s, m are then check the size guide they usually provide.

Tapofthemorning · 27/01/2025 10:24

I think it's helpful. I'm a tall in lots of things, although I don't consider myself at 5ft 8in. especially tall. Jumpsuits is a big one. I'll size up. It's not so bad with skirts but other clothes, yes. Also I want leggings that come down to my ankles. The bikini top is unnecessary but might just be standardised.

But is an XS a 6, an 8 .. or what? And how does whether she’s a 6,8 or 10 relate to her height?
Honestly everyone - you’re all getting a lot more het about it than I am! I’m mildly irritated by it - perhaps Hate in my OP was a bit strong. Everyone in my house was watching football and I was a bit bored. I’m not losing sleep over it
and as I said, I’m actually not nit picking - I said much earlier on that I was happy to accept it’s just me! Chill out all

They are 2 separate pieces of information as has been stated about 7 times.

augustusglupe · 27/01/2025 10:34

I’m 5.9 and I find it helpful to see the length of clothes on the model

Scentsitive · 27/01/2025 11:18

They do relate to each other - they're supposed to indicate what the garment of that size looks like on a person of that particular height, with that particular body shape.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 27/01/2025 15:12

But a 5ft0 size 14 will look completely different to a 5ft8 size 14. I'm the former and look a lot bigger than taller people my dress size.

Itssofunny · 27/01/2025 15:22

I don't buy anything online unless they give the height of the model. I'm quite far above average height, making trousers almost impossible to buy for and work skirts often indecently short. Yabu and also severely lacking in imagination.

Edited

Younger people are taller with bigger feet so shops are having to adjust gradually. DD2 is 5'10", I'm 5'7". I wish they would adjust though so that size 9 and 10 are normal sizes stocked in women's shoes, I don't think DD2 is the only tall girl with proportionately large feet.

If that's a reply to me, this is true of course. But if the prospective buyer is a size up or down and one or two inches taller or shorter than the model, then the information is very useful. It makes it easier to make an educated guess on how a size up or down, or indeed the pictured size, would sit.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 27/01/2025 15:43

@Scentsitive no it was a belated reply to the OP who seems to find this fact unfathomable. Heights aren't that helpful to me as they never have models anywhere near my height.

Scentsitive · 27/01/2025 15:47

Ah fair enough! 🙂

Moier · 27/01/2025 15:47

Have you ever been a plus size? They seem to think you have longer arms and legs than someone the same height?
Plus size clothes are all longer in dress length/ trousers length/ arm lengths.. if the sleeves are cuffed the cuffs are huge .So yes height needs to be on description.

sjs42 · 27/01/2025 15:53

Height makes a massive difference and you can't tell someone's height from a photo.

If Jane is 5 foot 7 and wearing an XS/S and you think you have a similar figure/size to Jane, then you need to know if you have a similar height or not. If you do, then take the size she's wearing. If not, you adjust the size.

I always think it's really disappointing when they don't say how the height/size that the model is/wearing.

Footsontheotherboot · 27/01/2025 15:54

I like it when the do this, I can visualise the items better

blackbird77 · 27/01/2025 15:58

Whiskeywithwater · 26/01/2025 18:56

But height makes no difference! I’m the same height as my daughter .. she wears a size 8, I wear a 12

So presumably you’re different builds then? That’s why they give the height. 1. So a customer who’s the same height as the model can tell if a garment will be scraping the floor or not and 2. You compare your build to the model build. As you know her height, you can extrapolate a rough estimate of what dress size you would be. You can see what build the model is easily but harder to assess height so that’s why they give you that information.

So if the model is 5,7 and so are you and you visually estimate you have the same build, get the size the model is wearing. If you’re the same height but chunkier, get two sizes up from the model.

kittycloud · 27/01/2025 20:32

I love this too, I'm only shoet so it helps if inside leg measurements aren't included, or I want to understand where a dress will sit on me.
