‘Jane’ is 5’7” and is wearing an XS/S etc
what the fuck has her height got to do with her dress size? On Oh Polly this was also on a bikini top! How does this help??

Because if you're tall a size S can look very different than it would on someone who's petite.
Also length - being 5'4" I find it really useful to know how tall the model is so I can judge if something is likely to be too long for me

But height makes no difference! I’m the same height as my daughter .. she wears a size 8, I wear a 12

Yes but my DD is a size 8 and only 5'1" so looks very different to someone who is 5'8" wearing a size 8. It really does make a difference!
I'm a 12-14 and overweight at 5'4" (and look a bit plump) but someone taller would be a size 12 and a healthy weight and look slim.
Someone very petite could really look quite big at a size 12

Needspaceforlego · 26/01/2025 19:10

@Onetimeonly2024
You've nailed it.
The sizing on women's clothes is a riot.

Life would be easier if they were done in actual measurements, waist sizes, or bust sizes anything would be better than the current 'think of a number & double it'

TeenLifeMum · 26/01/2025 19:10

I find it helpful. I have a short distance over my shoulders and often have to sew strappy sleeves to shorten them so understanding the height of the model is helpful. Gives you a guide.

AccordionedWhileMallBurned · 26/01/2025 19:12

Bikini top - taller people will have a longer body, so it will change the overall look of the top.

In a bikini top?

Where it sits on your chest and abdomen compared to where you bottoms might come...

Prepared to accept it’s just me here! But height .. the fact that she’s 5.7 surely makes no difference to her cup size and what bikini top size she’s wearing??

It's even worse when clothing is described as "short", "medium" and "long". I just want to know the inside leg or skirt length in inches and/or centimetres.

M&S thinks short people are under 5ft 8in tall going by current offerings.
(When they used to provide trouser lengths in inches I knew that a 29in inside leg would fit - because my legs are 29in long!. Now you have to take a stab at the length).

Commonsense22 · 26/01/2025 19:36

I have never seen this fir children's clothes but look at the model height all the time when buying my own clothes. It's really useful for dress length.

ClassicBBQ · 26/01/2025 19:39

I love the height! I'm quite tall so it helps me know if a dress is likely to be up my arse or just above the knee.

Hang on, height really matters. I’m tall with long arms and legs and what looks good I’m my 5ft 6 inch friend looks ridiculous on me. Full length denim skirt on her reaches shoe tops. Same skirt on me comes half way down my calves and looks dowdy.

Winterskyfall · 26/01/2025 20:02

I like it. I'm tall so it gives me an idea on length.

If the bikini top has shoulder straps it makes a difference, they aren't always long enough for tall people.

Scentsitive · 26/01/2025 20:05

It's very helpful. It allows you to make an educated guess on whether or not the clothing will fit you. It's to do with things like hemlines, where the waist hits and so on.

Scentsitive · 26/01/2025 20:06

And if I know the height of the model I can better evaluate whether my body is similar to hers or not.

They just put the height and size on everything, OP. Who cares? Calm down.

Suzuki76 · 26/01/2025 20:10

They're separate points - the model size and their height.

So - this is what an S looks like on someone with this build. This is also what this dress looks like on someone who is 5ft7.

They will have loaded in this model's data for anything she models in the website CMS and it will be built in as a field on product pages. Nobody is sitting there removing it for certain items based on relevance.

MySweetGeorgina · 26/01/2025 20:15

OP you got completely the wrong end of the stick GrinGrin sorry but it is hilarious

It is not a "suggested clothes size"

They do not mean: Molly is 5ft 9 and wears an S, therefore if you are 5ft 9 you should buy an S

You are annoyed about a complete misunderstanding

What they are saying is: this is what an S looks like on this particular person who is 5ft9

For me it really helps as I am 6 ft, and if trousers look short on a 5ft9 model, they will def be too short on me

It's not telling you which size you should be Grin

Strawberryfruitcorner · 26/01/2025 20:20

It massively helps me, I usually always check but recently bought a longline fleece that looked long on the model. I forgot to check and she was only 5’6 so it looked long on her but wasn’t long enough for me at 5’10. If I’d checked I wouldn’t have bothered.

AffIt · 26/01/2025 20:23

I find it useful.

I'm not enormously tall, but a bit taller than average at 175cm, so it's good to know if something will be on my knee or skimming my knickers.

Sleeve length is a big thing, in particular.

Whiskeywithwater · 26/01/2025 18:56

If you're 5ft2 and the model is 5ft9 then you can get an idea of how the length might be different on you.
Why is this confusing?

Strawberryfruitcorner · 26/01/2025 20:29

Bikini tops can sometimes be too short in the straps for me, especially when a halter neck style.

DuesToTheDirt · 26/01/2025 20:30

I find it helpful as you can see proportions, clothing length etc.

Though it didn't help when I bought a pair of jeans - the model was the same height as me, apparently, but it turned out her legs must have been 4" longer. 😂

hopsalong · 26/01/2025 20:34

I find it really helpful but that's because I'm tall. I'm not as thin as a model but I'm usually about the same height (5'9'') so I can judge the length of trousers and skirts and whether I need one size up or two by how loose or not the size she's wearing is.

kaos2 · 26/01/2025 20:42

Of course it helps , I'm 5 foot and I can see what length it will be if I know their height !
