‘Jane’ is 5’7” and is wearing an XS/S etc
what the fuck has her height got to do with her dress size? On Oh Polly this was also on a bikini top! How does this help??

They probably put the same thing on all the pictures.

I like it anyway as it gives me an idea of how it might look on me. A size 10 who is 5'3 looks very different to a size 10 who is 5'10 for example even in a bikini. Taller people look slimmer.

It really helps with other clothes as you can work out how long the item might be on you. I am 5'3 and often find that clothes are much longer than me than on the models. Having a height tells me roughly how much longer.

Needspaceforlego · 26/01/2025 21:16

@Whiskeywithwater being curious what height are you?

I'm going to guess 5ft 7/8 so the length of a garment isn't really an issue for you?

5.6 - so not particularly tall or short. So what I’m saying is that looking at a dress, I get the thing that people are saying about length .. but actually often the length isn’t much different whether it’s an XS/S/M/L - so what’s even the point of mentioning what size they’re wearing?? My weight fluctuates- I’ve been an 8, I’ve been a 14. So my wardrobe reflects this. I’ve got a couple of dresses in a size 10/12 & 14. They’re not different lengths - they’re just wider!

Well, surely what you're saying here makes it more useful to have the size they're wearing?! You can see if the garment is is 'big' size 12 (for example), or small fitting, by how it fits on the model. And the height thing is useful as explained by previous posters.

If you don't find it useful then don't take any notice of it?

MabelMora · 26/01/2025 21:48

In fact it's even more useful if the sizes are S, M, L, XL. If the model is a size 10 and the M is quite snug fitting on her, then you can take that into account relative to your own clothes size.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 26/01/2025 21:49

You're missing the point. It's about how long it looks on the model, and how tall the model is.

I'm also 5'6". I've seen dresses and thought, oh, that's nice but a bit short for me. And then seen the model is 6ft 2 so the mid thigh dress she's wearing is probably just above knee length on me so wouldn't be short at all.

Also helpful to know if the model is a 5ft size 8 or a 6ft size 14. I can look at it judge better what it would look like on me if I know the model is smaller / same / larger than me.

Going back to bikinis, that's really helpful too. Often larger cup sizes are a different shape - it's great to know whether the model is wearing past the magical cup size of D where back bands and straps suddenly get wider.

Edit: unfortunate typo!

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 26/01/2025 21:51

it’s about trying to work out whether it is likely to fit you well. It’s useful but if you don’t find it useful then ignore it

RandomButtons · 26/01/2025 21:52

Whiskeywithwater · 26/01/2025 18:56

But height makes no difference! I’m the same height as my daughter .. she wears a size 8, I wear a 12

If you’re 5 foot 11 showing the height makes ALL the difference. I’m sure people around 5 foot feel the same. I like to know if shirts are likely to cover my midriff to be honest.

They might not be different lengths but then it’s about identifying if that item is right for you at all. If your tall and it’s being modeled by someone a lot shorter and already looks short on them you are likely to see it won’t work

TerracottaWorrier · 26/01/2025 21:53

Massively helpful. I'm 5'9 and despite being pretty slim, there's just more of me than there is of a short person. Knowing whether the model (who's usually around my height) is in an S or an XS means I know what I'll need.

denhaag · 26/01/2025 21:56

I love it as I am tall and slim so mostly the clothes will look like they do on the models. Winning!

faithbuffy · 26/01/2025 21:59

I love it
I can see the model is 5ft 9 and think well I'm 5ft 10 and that top looks long enough on her

The size just gives an idea of how it looks on a particular size rather than it being a guide

TeamMandrake · 26/01/2025 21:59

It is two unrelated pieces of information though. It's not saying "the model is 5ft 7 and a size 10, so if you are 5ft 7 and a larger size then you must be overweight". It's saying, this is how the length fits if you are 5ft 7. And, unrelated, this is how it looks in a size 10.

OneDenimRobin · 26/01/2025 22:03

I appreciate it because if ‘Jane’ is 5’9” and wearing a size 8 and it makes her look wide at the hips I don’t stand a chance.

Caerulea · 26/01/2025 22:04

Height is invaluable to me, I love when sites do it. Not that bothered by the size but I'm 5'9" & most things that look long enough on models barely reach my ankles. The amount of times I've seen dungarees or onesies, jumpsuits etc & fallen in love with them only to spot that the inside leg is 27/29 inches if they even give that info.

So a visual height reference saves me a lot of disappointment & returns.

But that’s the point .. it doesn’t mention what dress size she is! Only her height. Obviously (& I’m using Oh Polly as my example here), the models are uber slim. But they could be a 6 or an 8 or a 10 - I don’t know. So whether it’s an XS or S is a bit meaningless, as it doesn’t relate to her dress size

Because a 5ft size 10 woman looks very different to a 6ft one...

As someone who is 5ft 10 it really helps!

But you’re still missing the point - it’s not about different sizes of the same garment being different lengths, it’s about being able to judge how long the garment you are considering buying will look on you versus the model. I find it annoying when they don’t list the model’s height and usual clothing size, and the size they are pictured in.

But even if you don’t find that info useful hating it being there seems a bit strong - it’s just factual details about the model, it’s not making any sort of statement or suggestion about you at all.

boxyboxs · 26/01/2025 22:11

If you're tall you are probably wearing a larger size but are still looking slim, whereas if you're short you're more likely to wear a much smaller size to look as slim.

Exactly but people seem to struggle with this
concept.

I am with you. I'm just under 5ft 9 by a few mill so I'm tall. I'm also v large of chest to the issue where I have to buy bigger sizes and they gape above and below my chest.

The size of my chest also has a lifting size on my tops so I struggle buying tops I don't see in real life because I don't know if they're long enough. Occasionally I see something on vinted and send them a question and 90 percent of answers are "it's not quite hip length."

Thsts great for you, mate. But I'm tall with a petite length Inside leg and a very long body with a large chest. Your not quite hip length to me is belly button level most probably. I end up having to wear short dresses as tops as often it's the only thing with enough length not to flash everyone. 80 percent of the time I can't buy sets of pyjamas because the top ends up like a boob tube on me. I hate how short tops are. No one likes a 27 inch length top! Personally I need roughly 34 inches for comfort

BeanAround · 26/01/2025 22:17

Whiskeywithwater · 26/01/2025 19:19

Prepared to accept it’s just me here! But height .. the fact that she’s 5.7 surely makes no difference to her cup size and what bikini top size she’s wearing??

I’m tall and find bras and bikinis one of the hardest things to buy as the distance from my shoulder to under-boob is longer than most people’s. Even fully loosening adjustable shoulder-straps isn’t always enough.

I can live with sleeves being a bit short or the waist of a dress sitting in slightly the wrong place but the band of a bra or bikini has to sit under your boobs!
