We have a friend with a birthday in a few weeks.

The number one song when he was born was ‘Cinderella Rockafella.’

As you’ve possibly guessed - if this was his birthday number one - he’s still a young lad and might be a bit shy and self conscious when it comes ti things like showy displays ! 🙌

His birthday’s at the beginning of March.

What my partner and I would love to do is an impromptu dance to this song when we all visit the local social club in a few weeks to celebrate his birthday.

I’m busy learning the exact lyrics for this song already!

i personally LOVE this song although some people apparently find it a bit twee

SO -

YANBU - it’s a lovely, gesture and great to take initiative at a time when most people are busy scrolling their phones and CBA to make an effort for anyone or anything!

YABU - ‘Cinderella Rockafella’ is a novelty record sung by seasoned performers and the ‘Average Joes’ of this world can’t carry off such a performance without it looking extremely naff!

It sounds horrible

Lottapianos · 26/01/2025 17:20

I would die of cringe on the spot. If you have the slightest doubt about how he would take it, DO NOT DO IT!

It sounds horrible

I take it you’re not the kind of person who likes being serenaded at the dinner table by the resident hotel musician when on a Mediterranean holiday ?

Sorry but it sounds unbearably cringe and much more about getting you into the spotlight than the person with the birthday.

Twaddlepip · 26/01/2025 17:22

Why would you try to steal focus on his birthday though? Are you both ‘performer’ types?

CurlsLDN · 26/01/2025 17:22

Would he get the reference that it was number one when he was born - or even know the song? I’m not at all interested in the music from my birth and very early years, it has no nostalgia for me as I was too young to know it

AffIt · 26/01/2025 17:22

No, that sounds a terrible idea.

Why don't you do something that you're really confident he'll like, given that it is actually HIS birthday and not an excuse for you and your partner to debut your cabaret act?

KitsyWitsy · 26/01/2025 17:23

Holy fuck.

SwerveCity · 26/01/2025 17:23

Oh god. Play the song by all means, but why would you dance?!

DoYouReally · 26/01/2025 17:23

While thoughtful in some ways;

He may embarrassed/uncomfortable.
He is unlikely to know ot was number one when he was born.
Most others won't either.
Some may perceive it as attention seeking and taking the spotlight off him.
It's not a great or well known song.

Gifts/Surprises should ne about the recipients not the givers. Unless you know he will love it, I wouldn't do it.

TheNewSchmoo · 26/01/2025 17:23

If I am right he is 66 and I suppose would be ok if you are some kind of am dram musical family. But then I saw the post about making it more about you than him, and i can see that point.

When you said young and shy, I imagined a 9 year old and I do think that would be horrible.

ACatAsleepInYourHat · 26/01/2025 17:24

How is he still a "young lad" when this was a hit in 1967? However old he is, frankly I'd cringe myself inside out if anyone did an impromptu dance for me.

This. Just so much this.

I would hate it.

Scentsitive · 26/01/2025 17:24

God no, don't do that.

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/01/2025 17:24

Please don’t.

BestZebbie · 26/01/2025 17:25

Would he actually recognise the significance? I don’t know a lot of newborns who are heavily into the chart of the week.

Quietnowplease · 26/01/2025 17:25

Is he the kind of person that would appreciate someone doing this for him? Would his friends? If the answer isn't a confident 100% YES don't do it.

I would absolutely hate it - massive massive cringe and making it about you - but appreciate there are very weird odd people in the world you might like it.

SwerveCity · 26/01/2025 17:25

Scentsitive · 26/01/2025 17:24

God no, don't do that.

You just know OP is gonna do it anyway, whatever the outcome on here.

Funkyslippers · 26/01/2025 17:25

I'd never heard of it. Would he even know the song?

19lottie82 · 26/01/2025 17:25

God…… no.

Viviennemary · 26/01/2025 17:26

Ot sounds a totally dire idea. Don't.

TheEnterainer · 26/01/2025 17:26

Twaddlepip · 26/01/2025 17:22

No neither of us are performer types.

We’d be doing it as something very ‘different’ that he might enjoy as its something not many people can be bothered to do

OP posts:
Alalalala · 26/01/2025 17:27

So you want to make his birthday celebration all about you performing? Oh Lord, don’t do it. All onlookers will recognise it as the attention grab it would be!

TheNewSchmoo · 26/01/2025 17:27

And as for being serenaded on Mediterranean holidays, I'm British and polite and so would suck it up whilst wishing the ground could swallow me whole.

Happyinarcon · 26/01/2025 17:27

It could work if everyone was at the right stage of drunk
