We have a friend with a birthday in a few weeks.

The number one song when he was born was ‘Cinderella Rockafella.’

As you’ve possibly guessed - if this was his birthday number one - he’s still a young lad and might be a bit shy and self conscious when it comes ti things like showy displays ! 🙌

His birthday’s at the beginning of March.

What my partner and I would love to do is an impromptu dance to this song when we all visit the local social club in a few weeks to celebrate his birthday.

I’m busy learning the exact lyrics for this song already!

i personally LOVE this song although some people apparently find it a bit twee

SO -

YANBU - it’s a lovely, gesture and great to take initiative at a time when most people are busy scrolling their phones and CBA to make an effort for anyone or anything!

YABU - ‘Cinderella Rockafella’ is a novelty record sung by seasoned performers and the ‘Average Joes’ of this world can’t carry off such a performance without it looking extremely naff!

He’s 57 surely, are you sure you’ve identified the correct number one from his birth?
This was a cringe-making song when it was first released…what on earth made you think this was a good idea.

Doseofreality · 26/01/2025 17:28

I think it would only really work if you are prepared to tie him to a chair so he can’t escape.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 26/01/2025 17:28

Is that the one that's goes "I'm the lady, the ladyhooooo"?

Hoppinggreen · 26/01/2025 17:28

Alalalala · 26/01/2025 17:27

So you want to make his birthday celebration all about you performing? Oh Lord, don’t do it. All onlookers will recognise it as the attention grab it would be!

Yep, why are you making HIS brithday a "look at me" event?

Funkyslippers · 26/01/2025 17:28

TheEnterainer · 26/01/2025 17:26

No neither of us are performer types.

We’d be doing it as something very ‘different’ that he might enjoy as its something not many people can be bothered to do

I don't think that's the reason why not many people would do it!

Tootingbec · 26/01/2025 17:28

Oh God No!! I would cringe myself inside out if someone did this.

Does he even know the song?? I had to Google it and when I heard it I vaguely recognised it but it is a bit of an odd, weird song and very slow tempo and long!!

It would be interminable!!

DoYouReally · 26/01/2025 17:28

Also, are you a really good singer and performer?

IhadaStripeyDeckchair · 26/01/2025 17:28

This sounds all about you not your friend
Just don't do it

CurbsideProphet · 26/01/2025 17:29

I imagine everyone will be wondering why you are making your friend's birthday all about your need to show off in front of an audience.

Growsomeballswoman · 26/01/2025 17:29

I'd walk out. Sounds absolutely dreadful.

Couldntthinkofadecentname · 26/01/2025 17:30

Oh god no sounds awful. It’s be a ground swallow me now moment.
It sounds like you’re preparing something you’d like but for someone entirely different

MotherOfCats25 · 26/01/2025 17:30

That's horribly cringy. It's a friends birthday not your wedding dance!

icanatilldancetowhigfield · 26/01/2025 17:31

It's unanimous that this is a horrendous idea. You asked and have had a very clear answer!

FireandBrimstone · 26/01/2025 17:31

he’s still a young lad and might be a bit shy and self conscious when it comes ti things like showy displays ! 🙌

The more I read your OP the more unbelievable I find the whole thing. Is a 66 year old really in anyone's books a 'young lad'?

All this is verging on the delusional.

Anyway if you are genuine, please read the room (in terms of the overwhelming view of responses here OP), and cancel this appallingly narcissistic idea.

TrixieFatell · 26/01/2025 17:31

I'd hate this personally, it would make me feel uncomfortable. I also hate being serenaded

Christmassoxs · 26/01/2025 17:31

To tell it straight if anyone did this to me with that godawful song I'd have get up and walk out laughing. If I saw someone performing this song I'd think that's so bloody awful they must be a couple of right twats.
But then I hate karoke too Urgh, on so many levels.

evilharpy · 26/01/2025 17:31

TheEnterainer · 26/01/2025 17:21

I take it you’re not the kind of person who likes being serenaded at the dinner table by the resident hotel musician when on a Mediterranean holiday ?

I don't think many people are that kind of person.

Re Cinderella Rockerfella - I would die on the spot, as I expect would the vast majority of people. Don't do this to your poor friend.

Violetparis · 26/01/2025 17:31

Terrible idea. It's your friend's birthday, It's not about you.

cariadlet · 26/01/2025 17:31

It sounds hideous - toe curlingly embarrassing.

You said that he's self-conscious and yet you're doing something that would make him the centre of attention. It sounds like you want to do something that's all about you - what you would consider fun, something where you're the star of the show, rather than what he would enjoy.

On a side note, the song from when he was born wouldn't really have any emotional resonance anyway. The song that was number one when he turned 18 would probably mean more to him.
I always find things like that rather odd. I was given a newspaper from the day I was born for my 50th. It was a kind thought and I made all the right noises when it was given to me but I don't remember the year so it seemed a bit meaningless.

Also quite confused because you said he's a young lad. I googled when the song was released. Surely he's in his 50s? 🤔

tilypu · 26/01/2025 17:31

Sounds awful.

Save doing something like that for your own birthday. People will happily indulge you then.

TwentyTwentyFive · 26/01/2025 17:32

I would honestly be mortified if any of my friends did this. It's also a really odd thing to do as it's making his birthday all about you and I'd be seriously embarrassed about your desire for attention if I was a guest.

Lowhangingfruitisthebest · 26/01/2025 17:33

97% so far have voted YABU.....let that sink in! Unless he's in the 3% that think this is a wonderful idea he will be mortified!
It's not a risk I would take .

Edenmum2 · 26/01/2025 17:33

Well everyone is telling you it'd be awful but I've got a feeling your mind is made up, so let us know how it goes

FindusMakesPancakes · 26/01/2025 17:33

I am cringing at the very idea. It sounds so tacky and awful to take over his party like that on the basis that 'he might like it'. I am embarrassed for you.
