We have a friend with a birthday in a few weeks.

The number one song when he was born was ‘Cinderella Rockafella.’

As you’ve possibly guessed - if this was his birthday number one - he’s still a young lad and might be a bit shy and self conscious when it comes ti things like showy displays ! 🙌

His birthday’s at the beginning of March.

What my partner and I would love to do is an impromptu dance to this song when we all visit the local social club in a few weeks to celebrate his birthday.

I’m busy learning the exact lyrics for this song already!

i personally LOVE this song although some people apparently find it a bit twee

SO -

YANBU - it’s a lovely, gesture and great to take initiative at a time when most people are busy scrolling their phones and CBA to make an effort for anyone or anything!

YABU - ‘Cinderella Rockafella’ is a novelty record sung by seasoned performers and the ‘Average Joes’ of this world can’t carry off such a performance without it looking extremely naff!

Holy fuck.

This.

This, by the way, is my first ever 'this'😂

RitaFromTheRanch · 26/01/2025 17:45

I've got a vision of Ricky Gervais in the office telling people to laugh and enjoy it while he dances out of step.

Sophiasguitar · 26/01/2025 17:39

I can’t imagine enjoying something like this. I don’t see the point. Do we all have to stop what we’re doing and watch? Do you want applause after? It’s an odd gift.

Are you going to sing one verse and the chorus or the whole thing.Wll there be choreography. If it was done to me ( I'm 60 this year) I would fix my face into a mask of joy, but I could only maintain it for 1 minute max. If you did the entire, dreadful thing, my arsehole would have climbed so far up the inside of my body there would be a bump visible on the top of my head. Please don't do it it's not cool, fun, quirky, mad. You'll look really stupid.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 26/01/2025 17:46

I'd sell a kidney to watch it

EmeraldRoulette · 26/01/2025 17:47

ACatAsleepInYourHat · 26/01/2025 17:24

How is he still a "young lad" when this was a hit in 1967? However old he is, frankly I'd cringe myself inside out if anyone did an impromptu dance for me.

Thank you
this confused me as I was thinking "a popular song from the last 20 years and I don't know it" 😂

having googled, I won't listen to it 😂

don't do it op.

GreyCarpet · 26/01/2025 17:48

The biggest issue with this is that most people don't know or care about the song that was number one on their birthday.

It's possibly only significant to those who were older and so aware of it when they were born.

It just seeks a bit pointless really and not really worth the effort you're going to.

I have no awareness of the actual song so can't comment on that.

MoonWoman69 · 26/01/2025 17:48

Having just googled my birth day song, again I'd say no... Because I've never bloody heard of it! I'd just sit there looking dumbfounded if someone chose to dance to it on my birthday! And then probably keep my distance from then on!

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 26/01/2025 17:48

Youre going to do it anyway aren't you?

It'll be awful OP. I'd piss myself laughing with second hand embarrassment if I saw someone do this

Funkyslippers · 26/01/2025 17:48

TheEnterainer · 26/01/2025 17:21

I take it you’re not the kind of person who likes being serenaded at the dinner table by the resident hotel musician when on a Mediterranean holiday ?

Thats a totally different scenario. Their job is literally to entertain people and if you go along you pretty much know what's going to happen ie. the singer will sing.

HarpieDuJour · 26/01/2025 17:49

I think you should do it. It will provide everyone you know with dining-out stories for years to come. Your friend may never speak to you again, but your names will live on forever!

Seriously, it's a terrible idea, and for your own rather than a gift for your friend.

sugarandfudge · 26/01/2025 17:50

Too much potential to be painfully embarrassing for everyone involved. The only way I'd risk would be if the whole group who'll be present love these types of displays, but if the 'birthday boy' himself is shy, I really wouldn't.

UpUpUpU · 26/01/2025 17:51

Fuck no!!

PinkArt · 26/01/2025 17:51

MoonWoman69 · 26/01/2025 17:41

Eww just no! If it was your birthday or anniversary, great, crack on, that would be your day. But please don't spoil his birthday!

(I think we need a thread derail and all post our birthday songs! 😁)

Mine was Another Brick In The Wall so the OP would need to drag some kids along from a London primary school to join in the fun

'A bit pointless' is the baseline, but to someone who is described as shy and self-conscious, it would be actively cruel.

Lettucepray1 · 26/01/2025 17:51

It’s a no from me too I’m afraid.
If it was #1 when he was born he won’t have a connection to it. People love the songs from when they were teenagers.

This sounds like it’s all about you and what you want, i stead of about him and what he’d like.

Do a dance on your own birthday instead!

GiddyRobin · 26/01/2025 17:52

TheNewSchmoo · 26/01/2025 17:18

It sounds horrible

Your username made me grin. 😁

Funnywonder · 26/01/2025 17:52

I was born in 1967, when that song was a hit, and it seems so far removed from anything I can relate to. I mean, like me, he would have been a teenager in the 1980s, so I'm sure there must be some other embarrassing one hit wonder from that era you could butcher. Something he would actually recognise. What about 'Save Your Love' by Renee and Renato?😂

viques · 26/01/2025 17:52

TheEnterainer · 26/01/2025 17:26

No neither of us are performer types.

We’d be doing it as something very ‘different’ that he might enjoy as its something not many people can be bothered to do

“ something not many people can be bothered to do”.

probably because more people try to think of birthday celebrations their friends would really love, rather than something they might enjoy but which would more likely cause them, and their other guests, extreme embarrassment, and would almost certainly create very awkward pause in the party.

Just don’t , please.

Sampler · 26/01/2025 17:52

Think you and the husband partook in too much weed when you came up with this idea.
please upload a video of your ‘birthday present’, that I would like to see.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 26/01/2025 17:54

It's a terrible idea. Not least because you've already described your friend as being shy but because the song is for a couple... and you and the person whose birthday is are not a couple.

Your rationale to do it because 'people don't bother' with stuff like this is bonkers. People don't do stuff like this because it's not wanted. If you and your partner want to prance around singing to each other at home, fill your boots, but please don't inflict this (what will only be) hideous, cringeworthy performance on your friend. You run the risk of ruining this poor man's birthday.

Gatekeeper · 26/01/2025 17:54

Jesu...100% cringey. Toe curlingly so

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 26/01/2025 17:54

It would be pretty cringe if you'd picked his favourite song. Picking some novelty song that's only connected to him by the date and that he might not know or remotely like ? Bonkers and awful!

BMW6 · 26/01/2025 17:54

OP for fucks sake DONT RUIN YOUR FRIENDS BIRTHDAY

It is a truly terrible idea given your description of his personality.

I'm older than you (67) and I remember this song - it was bloody dreadful way back then and will have no resonance with him whatsoever.

I think you will do it anyway because you are one of those people, but don't be surprised if you piss people off mightily by doing it.

PullTheBricksDown · 26/01/2025 17:54

OK, now I know it's not actually a teenager you'll be doing this to, go ahead. I imagine you will anyway. Your 'young at heart' friend may be flattered!
