We have a friend with a birthday in a few weeks.

The number one song when he was born was ‘Cinderella Rockafella.’

As you’ve possibly guessed - if this was his birthday number one - he’s still a young lad and might be a bit shy and self conscious when it comes ti things like showy displays ! 🙌

His birthday’s at the beginning of March.

What my partner and I would love to do is an impromptu dance to this song when we all visit the local social club in a few weeks to celebrate his birthday.

I’m busy learning the exact lyrics for this song already!

i personally LOVE this song although some people apparently find it a bit twee

SO -

YANBU - it’s a lovely, gesture and great to take initiative at a time when most people are busy scrolling their phones and CBA to make an effort for anyone or anything!

YABU - ‘Cinderella Rockafella’ is a novelty record sung by seasoned performers and the ‘Average Joes’ of this world can’t carry off such a performance without it looking extremely naff!

It sounds horrible

What a terrible thing to do.

Bingbongbooboo33 · 28/01/2025 17:57

Well they are not going to find that out here are they??
As well as that, like I said, it will be over with & forgotten in no time it's hardly going to ruin someone's life. ....even if the birthday boy ( who we dont know) hates it !! It's a few minutes in time. Perspective.

LifeMovesOn · 28/01/2025 18:18

Have you looked at the album chart for his birthday? Might be something a bit less offensive there 🤗

LillyPJ · 28/01/2025 22:59

Not judging by the comments here!

FantasiaTurquoise · 28/01/2025 23:04

I never understand the fixation on what was number one on the day someone was born. They were a baby who didn't listen to music. Surely the songs that mean the most to us are the ones from our teenage years that are the actual sound track to our memories?

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 29/01/2025 11:04

Not only is it cringy, it's creepy.

We have the middle aged Op @TheEnterainer and his/her partner singing and dancing this to each other, in front of the friend - the song has no relevance to him, no relevance to his relationship to the Op and his/her partner.

Why don't you save this silliness for your silver / pearl / gold wedding anniversary - if you and your partner are married to each other.

or sing and dance to it, to each other in your own living room !

Yes. It would be more obvious if there was a secret implant implanted into all babies that meant that they would respond in a certain pre-programmed way when they heard their birthday number 1 for the rest of their life. So I would be programmed to proclaim my undying love to the nearest person every time Donny Osmond's 'Puppy Love' came on the radio. Or something.

gannett · 29/01/2025 11:13

DP has a friend who I suspect has a similar "wouldn't this be fun" mindset as the OP and I live in fear of her actually doing something like this one day.

AmIEnough · 01/02/2025 07:47

Noooooo!!!!!

SafetyLady · 01/02/2025 18:24

"impromptu"
I don't think that word means what you think it does.

Iloveyoubut · 01/02/2025 18:32

Sorry that’s just horrible. I feel so bad saying that but it’s … please don’t do this. It’s very … i must steal the show at all costs. Have you seen the scene in Friends where Amanda is high kicking on front of Chandler and asking him if he can believe she’s never had any professional dance training? I have severe second hand embarrassment for you even thinking about doing this for someone else’s birthday when the song literally means nothing to them and it’s … just … you can’t!

Iloveyoubut · 01/02/2025 18:34

TheEnterainer · 26/01/2025 17:26

No neither of us are performer types.

We’d be doing it as something very ‘different’ that he might enjoy as its something not many people can be bothered to do

I don’t think it’s that people can’t be bothered… it’s just that they would never!

waverley8 · 01/02/2025 20:14

Sounds fucking awful, please don’t do that.

It's actually hilarious that the OP thinks that the reason most people don't prepare novelty song-and-dance numbers with which to serenade their friends at their social club is because they 'can't be bothered'.

You get that this isn't the main reason now, don't you, OP?

NotISaidTheCat · 02/02/2025 16:13

Everyone can stop telling OP what a terrible idea this is...she said a week ago that she wouldn't do it!

Yes, I'm assuming the idea was shelved long since, it's just funny the OP thinks that the reason people don't generally do song-and-dance routines for their friends' birthdays is 'because they can't be bothered'. That we would all, if we were better, less lazy friends, be learning the words to novelty songs and working out our moves.

Sorry, my reply wasn't directed specifically at you! I just find it amusing that this thread keeps popping up on my watched list every day, with new responses saying "OMG NO DON'T DO IT!" 😂

Yes, I found OP's reasoning really funny too (though would have paid good money to see her perform this!).

Endorewitch · 07/02/2025 00:28

Your words He might enjoy'
The word might should tell you not to do it.
What if you embarrass him
It certainly is different but different isn't always good.
Sadly I think you are likely to make fools of yourselves.
Don't do it!!

AlexandrinaH · 07/02/2025 00:35

TheEnterainer · 26/01/2025 17:21

I take it you’re not the kind of person who likes being serenaded at the dinner table by the resident hotel musician when on a Mediterranean holiday ?

Is anyone? 😂😂

Oldwmn · 07/02/2025 23:12

There's a good reason more people don't do this sort of thing.

Remember...Less is More

HiEarthlings · 08/02/2025 13:09

Your two options don't cover the essence of the problem. It's not whether you could pull it off or not, it's whether the recipient, the birthday guy, would enjoy it or not. It's not YOUR day, it's HIS! If you have the slightest inkling that he may not like it (and you obviously do) then DON'T DO IT! If my so-called "friends" did this on my birthday they would no longer be friends! I cannot think of anything cringier....

ThinWomansBrain · 08/02/2025 13:19

Shame it wasn't Itsy Bitsy yellow polka dot bikini

You could have dressed the part.
Friend could have hidden in the locker.

I liked OP. She was very gracious in face of all the horror and derision. I bet she is a lovely friend.
