We have a friend with a birthday in a few weeks.

The number one song when he was born was ‘Cinderella Rockafella.’

As you’ve possibly guessed - if this was his birthday number one - he’s still a young lad and might be a bit shy and self conscious when it comes ti things like showy displays ! 🙌

His birthday’s at the beginning of March.

What my partner and I would love to do is an impromptu dance to this song when we all visit the local social club in a few weeks to celebrate his birthday.

I’m busy learning the exact lyrics for this song already!

i personally LOVE this song although some people apparently find it a bit twee

SO -

YANBU - it’s a lovely, gesture and great to take initiative at a time when most people are busy scrolling their phones and CBA to make an effort for anyone or anything!

YABU - ‘Cinderella Rockafella’ is a novelty record sung by seasoned performers and the ‘Average Joes’ of this world can’t carry off such a performance without it looking extremely naff!

I can’t imagine enjoying something like this. I don’t see the point. Do we all have to stop what we’re doing and watch? Do you want applause after? It’s an odd gift.

SaltyPig · 26/01/2025 17:39

Why are you attention seeking on his Birthday? Total cringe.

It sounds hideous - toe curlingly embarrassing.

You said that he's self-conscious and yet you're doing something that would make him the centre of attention. It sounds like you want to do something that's all about you - what you would consider fun, something where you're the star of the show, rather than what he would enjoy.

On a side note, the song from when he was born wouldn't really have any emotional resonance anyway. The song that was number one when he turned 18 would probably mean more to him.
I always find things like that rather odd. I was given a newspaper from the day I was born for my 50th. It was a kind thought and I made all the right noises when it was given to me but I don't remember the year so it seemed a bit meaningless.

Also quite confused because you said he's a young lad. I googled when the song was released. Surely he's in his 50s? 🤔

I agree with this.

If someone would sing for me on my birthday, I would rather hear a popular song from my teenage years, not from the year I was born.

Cosycover · 26/01/2025 17:40

Honest to God I'd leave if someone did this to me.

Simply stand up and leave without saying a word.

Yes 57 this year but young at heart ❤️

Strangely I've always hated this song.

You know your audience. I can't think of anyone I know who would appreciate your plan and what kind of dance can you do to it anyway?

In short, no.

Sorry for being a killjoy.

Anything that raises a smile in these crazy times is a lovely idea, go for it, who cares if people think its cringe, life is for living, not for being cool

It's cringey because it's confusing - nobody will know the link to the birthday and the song - and it's making the birthday about them.

It's less likely to make people smile on the day, and more likely to make them endure second hand embarrassment. But on the plus side, it will give everyone something to smile about on every future birthday.

TheEnterainer · 26/01/2025 17:21

I take it you’re not the kind of person who likes being serenaded at the dinner table by the resident hotel musician when on a Mediterranean holiday ?

OP, funny you should ask the question. So you are the 1 person who likes this cynical ploy to guilt us into tipping?

Speaks volumes.

TheSpottedZebra · 26/01/2025 17:41

An impromptu dance, you say?

Hobnobswantshernameback · 26/01/2025 17:41

If this is even for real I've met people like the OP who think their jolly japes are oh so totes hilaire whilst in fact most people think they're embarrassing immature wankers

PinkArt · 26/01/2025 17:41

I love a truly unhinged thread 😂
This would, of course, be a terrible idea.

MoonWoman69 · 26/01/2025 17:41

Eww just no! If it was your birthday or anniversary, great, crack on, that would be your day. But please don't spoil his birthday!

(I think we need a thread derail and all post our birthday songs! 😁)

DoYouReally · 26/01/2025 17:41

No idea why you posted as you are clearly going to go ahead no matter what the replies say!

Wendolino · 26/01/2025 17:42

It sounds like something that Cathy and Colin from Two Doors Down would do. I.e., a terrible idea.

Coconutter24 · 26/01/2025 17:43

Doesn’t sound like he’d enjoy it much. Do you think he would?

PlumpHobbit · 26/01/2025 17:43

I'd absolutely hate this

Complete with "sexy" dance

🤣🤣

TheEnterainer · 26/01/2025 17:26

No neither of us are performer types.

We’d be doing it as something very ‘different’ that he might enjoy as its something not many people can be bothered to do

Most people would find this achingly 😬 cringe
Poor bloke-
Can you not think of something less embarrassing like making him a lovely cake??

GreyAreas · 26/01/2025 17:43

Surely number one when you were 18 or 21 has more meaning, but even then it needs to be something they like and have fond memories of.
But if you and he will find it fun, enjoy your idea.

Itsaswelltime · 26/01/2025 17:44

That is a terrible idea, sorry. Just get him a normal gift that he would like.

TinyGingerCat · 26/01/2025 17:44

Let's say for arguments sake he'd love to be serenaded - would he know why you were singing that song? It's a pretty bizarre song tbh. I've just had to look up what was no.1 on my birthday and i don't think many people would know what was no.1 on the day they were born as music only really becomes important when you are old enough to remember it. If you do it OP I'm dying to know how he reacts.

MildredTheOctopus · 26/01/2025 17:44

Is he even likely to know the song? I've just looked up what the number one song on my birth date was, and I've never heard of it!

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 26/01/2025 17:44

HTH

Would you like this or find it unbearably cringe?
CatsForGovernment · 26/01/2025 17:44

It would make me want to cry, and not in joy.

It would be most people's worst nightmare, so you need to be VERY sure he would appreciate it. If a friend did this for me I would go NC because it shows they don't know me.
