We have a friend with a birthday in a few weeks.

The number one song when he was born was ‘Cinderella Rockafella.’

As you’ve possibly guessed - if this was his birthday number one - he’s still a young lad and might be a bit shy and self conscious when it comes ti things like showy displays ! 🙌

His birthday’s at the beginning of March.

What my partner and I would love to do is an impromptu dance to this song when we all visit the local social club in a few weeks to celebrate his birthday.

I’m busy learning the exact lyrics for this song already!

i personally LOVE this song although some people apparently find it a bit twee

SO -

YANBU - it’s a lovely, gesture and great to take initiative at a time when most people are busy scrolling their phones and CBA to make an effort for anyone or anything!

YABU - ‘Cinderella Rockafella’ is a novelty record sung by seasoned performers and the ‘Average Joes’ of this world can’t carry off such a performance without it looking extremely naff!

I died a bit inside just reading your OP.

RampantIvy · 26/01/2025 17:55

Joining in with why?

@TheEnterainer you have described the birthday "boy" as shy and self conscious. Just one poster in this whole thread has said "why not", the rest of us are saying don't spoil your friend's birthday by embarrassing him and making it about you.

Why did you bother asking when the replies are almost unanimously a resounding no?

MissDeborah · 26/01/2025 17:55

My mother would say
" stop showing off"

Just give him a card like a normal person

LostittoBostik · 26/01/2025 17:55

Oh my god - how old is he? If he's any younger than 35 (I don't know the song) PLEASE do not do this .

InfoSecInTheCity · 26/01/2025 17:55

I would be praying for the floor to open and eat me alive.

harriethoyle · 26/01/2025 17:55

I’m getting STRONG Amanda from Motherland vibes - which means you’re going to do it regardless of the vote on here and will make the chap’s birthday aLl AbOuT You. Proper main character energy 🙈

Pieceofpurplesky · 26/01/2025 17:55

I would hate it and think less of you as a friend for turning my birthday in to a cringe fest. Please don't do it

PlumpHobbit · 26/01/2025 17:56

We all know OPs gonna do it anyway don't we...

ItGhoul · 26/01/2025 17:56

I would cringe myself inside out if someone did this for another person’s birthday. It’s not even something that’s about him; you’re just looking for a reason to make you and your partner the centre of attention.

Does he even like the song? (My DP was born in 1968 and would hate it.) Does he actually know it was No1 when he was born? Even if he does know that, it doesn’t necessarily mean it has any significance or interest for him.

Workhardcryharder · 26/01/2025 17:56

Twaddlepip · 26/01/2025 17:22

Why would you try to steal focus on his birthday though? Are you both ‘performer’ types?

”steal focus”? Who is desperate for focus on their birthday aside from children?

DoloresODonovan · 26/01/2025 17:57

Esther and Abi Ofarim, an Israeli duo, touted to be the new Sonny and Cher,
massive hit, one hit wonder, late sixties, awful song.

Will this be on youtube OP?

LostittoBostik · 26/01/2025 17:57

Ok he's older so it's less cringe for him - more that you might make yourselves look a bit random?

viques · 26/01/2025 17:58

What’s wrongwith a nice cake, candles to blow out and a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday?

dapsnotplimsolls · 26/01/2025 17:58

If you must perform, do something you know he likes.

UrsulasHerbBag · 26/01/2025 17:58

This sounds like it is all about putting yourself centre stage and not really about the birthday celebrant. There is nothing impromptu about a rehearsed dance routine don’t do it OP.

CrabappleTrees · 26/01/2025 17:58

Please do it OP! And film it and pop the clip on here for us all to enjoy.

Nanny0gg · 26/01/2025 17:58

InfoSecInTheCity · 26/01/2025 17:55

I would be praying for the floor to open and eat me alive.

I'd rather the floor opened up and ate them alive

I'm assuming that this is a total windup from someone who thinks they're funny

Moveoverdarlin · 26/01/2025 17:59

I’m howling at this. I’ve just googled the song as I've never heard of it. Even in the original version it sounds like cats. I can’t imagine a harder song to sing or dance to. How are you planning to dance?

I would pay good money to watch this. At least £70.

Fencehedge · 26/01/2025 17:59

Are you quite mad?! Don't be so self-centred... Showing off like this with a flimsy excuse. Horrible, horrible idea. Are you going to listen to the 96% of us?

SheridansPortSalut · 26/01/2025 17:59

You are making yourselves the focus of his birthday.

'You' would love to do a dance and 'you personally' love the song.

A song from when he was born probably means nothing to him. It was well before his time.

Thehop · 26/01/2025 18:00

Terrible idea, awful song.

GreyCarpet · 26/01/2025 18:00

TheEnterainer · 26/01/2025 17:40

Yes 57 this year but young at heart ❤️

Look. You keep repeating this so seem to be under the impression that everyone who is saying don't do it is just an old beyond their years fuddy duddy...

Is that the case?

Chuchoter · 26/01/2025 18:00

Horrendous.

YourWildAmberSloth · 26/01/2025 18:01

I would find it cringeworthy, sorry OP. I would also wonder why my birthday was suddenly all about you. The point of the song would probably be lost on me as well, I doubt if many people know what song was No1 on the day they were born.

I'd definitely leave the dancing out....
