Well, it’s a separate point to whether or not immigrants are getting “too many” resources isn’t it?
I don’t think there’s enough support for people with mental health conditions or SEN in this country, full stop. Blaming immigrants with mental health problems for that isn’t going to make it any better. They’re also not getting any help.
Austerity was a political decision made by politicians not by immigrants. I work in the public sector and I’m not being over the top when I say that austerity has killed people. Either directly through lack of support for individuals, or indirectly by the impact that lack of support has on people’s networks.
your implicit question is - given the scarcity of our resources, should we allow immigrants into our country? And unfortunately I think the answer to that is that we don’t have much choice. People move countries for global reasons that are beyond our control. No one is coming here for a free ride because - as you rightly point out- there is nothing free for them to get. They are coming here because it’s marginally less awful than the alternative of war/ climate disaster/ slavery.
I think we need to put more resources into supporting everyone. Internationally, I think we need to figure out how to deal with mass immigration to Europe - it is going to keep happening, and we can either 1) accept this reality and develop ways and means to deal with on our terms or 2) pretend it isnt happening and stoke hatred and conflict between people until it becomes violent.
The Southport killer was not an immigrant who had recently arrived from another country. He was a product of the uk education and welfare systems under austerity measures. The riots that happened this summer were not caused by immigrants, either, but by British people and by politicians who would rather incite violence than tackle the situation.
