...murders.... that the reason these things happen is because people / immigrants are not being helped to integrate in our society and feel alienated. On Laura K show. Dear lord I'm sorry but that's ludicrous ... if I've misunderstood please help me out. Its really angered me !

I can't find much online about him having autism though? If he did he was clearly even more vulnerable and a threat. Integration as he was born here isn't really a key solution (it would have been for his parents ) but then Nadin Z made a valid point that if you are living in this country you need to abide by its values etc. This isn't the drift Kemi was on. But WHY also did his parents not alarm police etc ?? He had to stop his son from going in a taxi to previous school with a knife ! Surely you DO SOMETHING if you see this ?! Baffling

His parents knew what he was capable
Of and rang the police on him numerous times, well his dad did, the police knew of his issues so for me the blame starts here .. why was more not done ?
He had previously looked to book a taxi to a school on the last day of term to do something thing similar , his father rang the police and he was stopped, so much info has been covered up to protect this person why ? Fear of reprisals.
Looking at the facts and what was covered up, what happened in Southport could have been stopped, too many failings by people who could have done more, it's truly shocking.

SunshinDay · 26/01/2025 13:05

Add youth justice services for young offenders and more agencies on top.

Gownsandteas · 26/01/2025 13:05

SunshinDay · 26/01/2025 11:41

@Hotflushesandchilblains.. But he had access to many agencies.
How could more funding helped?
He was referred to prevent but at that time didn't meet their criteria and when he did apparently his case was closed.
he had access to cahms but both prevent and cahm rely on his interaction.. The police saw him with a knife and took him home when they could have arrested him, his parents reported him.
Nothing.

Well he didn't really access them. A few referrals here and there and received some minimal input before the case came to a close. It just shows that the mental health services in this county is shit. Plus the threshold to access support is so high. Sad all around.

SunshinDay · 26/01/2025 13:02

Cloak he had an ehcp, cahms, police, prevent and the last service from the special school for excluded children who were scared of him and gently trying to help him think about the victims of his hero's.

You do not understand how any of these services actually work, clearly.

SunshinDay · 26/01/2025 13:06

Blue the dad didn't ring the police on the last attempt to go to the school.

WilfredsPies · 26/01/2025 13:15

She’s a politician. She’ll twist any situation to fit what she wants to say. It’s what they all do, irrespective of party. I don’t think any of them are capable of seeing a tragedy and not twisting it round to suit their narrative.

What was covered up?

What reprisals do you think would have happened if people knew about the police knowledge, the referrals, social services, CAMHS etc

BoldRed · 26/01/2025 13:21

I’m not surprised his dad didn’t call the police that day. What was the point? They’d tried it four times before. There’s no evidence that his dad knew exactly what he was planning or that he had a knife.

NotinToTintin · 26/01/2025 13:22

SunshinDay · 26/01/2025 12:23

@NotinToTintin and what do you think about the men coming here from difficult backgrounds who also may have sen and proclivity to violence who won't be on any services radar

Well, it’s a separate point to whether or not immigrants are getting “too many” resources isn’t it?

I don’t think there’s enough support for people with mental health conditions or SEN in this country, full stop. Blaming immigrants with mental health problems for that isn’t going to make it any better. They’re also not getting any help.

Austerity was a political decision made by politicians not by immigrants. I work in the public sector and I’m not being over the top when I say that austerity has killed people. Either directly through lack of support for individuals, or indirectly by the impact that lack of support has on people’s networks.

your implicit question is - given the scarcity of our resources, should we allow immigrants into our country? And unfortunately I think the answer to that is that we don’t have much choice. People move countries for global reasons that are beyond our control. No one is coming here for a free ride because - as you rightly point out- there is nothing free for them to get. They are coming here because it’s marginally less awful than the alternative of war/ climate disaster/ slavery.

I think we need to put more resources into supporting everyone. Internationally, I think we need to figure out how to deal with mass immigration to Europe - it is going to keep happening, and we can either 1) accept this reality and develop ways and means to deal with on our terms or 2) pretend it isnt happening and stoke hatred and conflict between people until it becomes violent.

The Southport killer was not an immigrant who had recently arrived from another country. He was a product of the uk education and welfare systems under austerity measures. The riots that happened this summer were not caused by immigrants, either, but by British people and by politicians who would rather incite violence than tackle the situation.

That is absolute bollocks, the boy who committed the crime was not an immigrant and his family was well integrated into their local community, it was a terrible shock to all who knew him and his family.

This woman seems totally out of touch. However, what is new about that when it comes to politicians? If she has been quoted correctly of course, not out of context which we all know happens in the media.

BoldRed · 26/01/2025 13:27

Let’s stop with the cover-up bollocks. There will be a public inquiry.

CiderandPosies · 26/01/2025 13:28

SunshinDay · 26/01/2025 11:11

Why don't politicians get proper briefing on this stuff.
The mn threads on this have been incredibly informative.
It was nothing to do with integration and everything to do with his autism and a lack of service that could tackle his issues.
The services where there but each one proved totally ineffective.

Really.

So anyone who's on the AS is likely to behave like this?
Create Ricin to kill people. Hate people. Plan murders, etc etc.
Follow instructions on social media on how to kill people.

Did you read about what was found in his room?
It can't all be explained by autism.

Do you think his diagnosis might have played any role in this?

Or do you think it's irrelevant?

It is if it formed part of his court case, which the discussion inferred.

watch the programme on iplayer and see what you think .

I don't know if someone saying something and someone nodding is evidence though?

Has this been mentioned in any actual reporting of the case?

Why don’t you do some investigating? This is mumsnet and we are sharing what we have seen, read, heard or know.

I saw it this this morning and I’m saying what I saw.

I've read quite a few articles on the case and have not seen it reported that he wanted to kill white people or commit genocide against white people.

EdithBond · 26/01/2025 13:43

I don’t think any of us know enough about the case to comment. His experience as a child of immigrants, or due to his ethnicity, may have been a factor. It may not.

He’s not argued diminished responsibility as a defence. It’s possible he’s mentally unwell, or has disabilities, but won’t accept this and refuses treatment or support. So, the only way to prevent a person in that situation from harming other people is for them to be detained under mental health legislation, which is a pretty high bar for understandable reasons.

On the immigrant integration point, it’s hard to integrate when you don’t feel welcome and people are unfriendly, either due to your immigration status, nationality, ethnicity or religion. Some people make it clear immigrants aren’t welcome and some people are racist even to British people. Integration is a two-way street.

Tomatotater · 26/01/2025 13:44

This was exactly my experience, and I was also bullied by other Asians for it ( Muslim gangs of girls in my case 40 years ago now bullying non Muslim Asian girls to the extent many of us left the school) but in this case there is no evidence that this was the case. He was Christian for a start.
