Am I a far right extremist?

1000 replies

Isitme245 · 25/01/2025 11:30

I had a conversation with my best friend of 25 years the other day and she called me a far right extremist and how my views are scary, dangerous and 'nazi coded'
I was really shocked as I didn't think any of what I said was bad. I'm not a particularly avid supporter of any political party and very much keep opinions to myself. She's very supportive of labour and anti trump and always has been. Usually when she asks me my opinions I just don't want to get into it but I did the other night and now I feel bad.

Here's the breakdown:

  • she sent me an article and told me that Nigel Farage is going to ban abortion eventually if he wins an election. I read the article and pointed out he only suggested lowering the abortion cut off date to 22 weeks (not 24 as it is now). I told her it wasn't the end of the world and it's reasonable if you read his reasons. I also made the point that men shouldn't really be getting involved in abortion law but that what he said wasn't the end of the world.
  • she asked me about immigration and I said that it's great but that we should be prioritising skilled immigrants and have stronger immigration laws. She also asked about asylum seekers and hotels and I said that we should have stronger laws about monitoring people and collecting documentation when people arrive.
  • she sent me and asked about Elon Musk's Nazi salute and I said I didn't interpret it that way
  • I said that immigrants who rape or murder should be deported.

To me this feels really reasonable and not over the top but she really attacked me for it? Now I feel really awkward and uncomfortable talking to her. Is this far right??

We've already had almost the exact same thread. I wish people would just say what they want to discuss rather than the wide-eyed "Am I an extremist?!" threads.

This will just attract more far right people who seem reluctant to own the term. Of course people have the right to have far right views if they want to but they should stop whining and bleating when people define their views as what they are.

Well, you’re not pro-choice, you seem to be unaware that thousands of non-citizens who commit crimes are already deported every year - pretending this would be a change, new or controversial is a deliberate tactic of racists - and as your mind ‘didn’t go there’ you’ve ended up defending a clear Nazi gesture.

Its quite right wing isn’t it?

I think there's a difference between defending someone and just saying I don't have an opinion on it. I dont feel strongly enough about the salute to interpret it in any way. To me it didn't look Nazi but it was also a weird movement to do

Honestly OP, I would tell the imbecile that you now won't discuss politics with this person until she grows up a bit. Sounds exactly like most of the teenagers to mid 20's that I encounter.

amaworried · 25/01/2025 11:48

I cannot stand Farage but I am not sure why it is a Right Wing opinion to agree that abortion lowered to 22 weeks is more acceptable. Obviously there are circumstances where 24 weeks is a necessity but not always.

He's openly endorsed the far right in Germany if that helps clear your mind?

ShirkingFromHome95 · 25/01/2025 11:44

I'd say she's woke/bonkers and you're a rational person. What does she think about the many sexual assaults committed by asylum seekers, like the NYE where 1200 sexual assaults happened in Germany on one night alone?

Does she think we should just let anybody in and women should have to bear the cost? That the rights of foreign men from misogynistic cultures trump the rights of women already living here?

Edited

When I mentioned about having more monitoring and documentation of asylum seekers, she told me that asylum seekers commit more crimes because they need more support and people are racist towards them. I understand it must be a terrible experience to have to leave your home country and seek asylum but I'm not sure it excuses committing crime

Having said that I wouldn't send unsolicited articles to other people, especially those who generally keep their views to themselves.

Isitme245 · 25/01/2025 11:36

I'm not sure but when watching it my mind didn't automatically go 'Nazi'
This is what I told her

My mind went automatically to 'fascist' salute given his unconditional support for the AfD in Germany who are an unashamedly, unapologetically fascist political party who also have been photographed making these kinds of salute.

The Anti Defamation League, a US organisation founded to stop the defamation of Jewish people, initially just referred to the salute as 'awkward' and they received a lot of push back from Jewish people who strongly disagreed. However, Musk then doubled down with some Holocaust puns on Twitter which the ADL then unequivocally condemned.

mitogoshigg · 25/01/2025 11:51

I was agreeing vaguely with you until you mentioned Musk. You are mistaken on this

I'm totally pro- choice, any time for any reason.

But I still don't think it is right wing to discuss these things, I think not discussing these things because they are seen as 'far right' is lazy on the part of the left, and leads to losing votes because debate and nuance is too difficult.

We've seen the same over women's sex based spaces and sports. Women haven't taken well to being called bigoted and right wing for simply wanting a reasonable discussion.

His reasons were that a baby can now be viable at 24 weeks. Again I don't particularly agree nor disagree with him, I just told her it wasn't the end of the world and she shouldn't be worried that he's planning to ban abortion based on that. She tried to get me to sign a petition against him banning abortion.

Initially I didn't see it as a Nazi salute, but given this context I've changed my mind

I think the Left is the one making the larger use of what they denounce as far right practices:
restrictions to freedom of expression, check
authoritarianism, check
discrimination and favouritism based on race, religion, etc., check

The big difference is that their ideological enemy is the local population and the local culture

Doloresparton · 25/01/2025 11:54

Ignore.
My dsis has accused me of all sorts, years ago of being a Thatcherite, I’ve never voted conservative in my life and couldn’t stand Thatcher.
Sometimes i’m a Daily Mail reader apparently ( I actually read the headlines of many papers online and subscribe to The Times.
I’m also anti trans according to my dsis, I’m not I’m just pro safe spaces for women.

Anyone who feels confident in their political views for sound reasons would not need to resort to calling others far right when they’re clearly not.
Your friend is a ‘if you’re not for me then you’re against me person.’ You can’t reason with such people.
Within Westminster mp’s of all parties are frequently colleagues and can have opposing views whilst respecting other opinions.

ShirkingFromHome95 · 25/01/2025 11:54

The loony left are the ones responsible for driving people to the right. Most people are centrist but some get sick of seeing no change and start considering extreme measures.

Read the blurb below from the front page of the Reform website and it's easy to understand how a lot of people will choose this over gender nonsense, men in women's prisons, prioritising people born outside the UK, etc.

You are worse off, both financially and culturally. Wages are stagnant, we have a housing crisis, our young people struggle to get on the property ladder, we have rising crime, energy bills are some of the highest in Europe, the NHS isn’t working, both legal and illegal immigration are at record levels and woke ideology has captured our public institutions and schools.

The Conservatives have failed and Labour will fail too. A vote for either is a vote for more incompetence, dishonesty and failure.

We are ruled by an out of touch political class who have turned their backs on our country.

Reform is the alternative.

Only Reform will stand up for British culture, identity and values. We will freeze immigration and stop the boats. Restore law and order. Repair our broken public services. Cut taxes to make work pay. End government waste. Slash energy bills. Unlock real economic growth.

Only Reform will take back control over our borders, our money and our laws. Only Reform will secure Britain’s future as a free, proud and rich nation.

Just to say: I don't want abortion banned and wouldn't be opposed to fighting it if it came up. The conversation simply arose when she claimed that he was planning to ban abortion and I tried to explain that's not what was happening

Sassysoonwins · 25/01/2025 11:54

You had nodding until the nazi salute. Would you do that action outside where people could see you and be fine to defend it?

Admittedly I think Nigel Farage is a master of sounding quite reasonable until you dig deeper which is why his followers are so far right. I think if you just lightly think 'well he seems reasonable' you may want to do a bit of research.

Overall you seem a bit to the right of centre, not very well informed and not bothered about it which is the case for many people.

Keepgettingolder81 · 25/01/2025 11:55

I share most of your opinions, actually. I am anything other than far right. I don't think you are either.

I work for and massively support the NHS and a massively into equal rights.

I think we have gone too far and accepting nonsense and this country has become a bit of a laughing stock.
