Am I a far right extremist?

1000 replies

Isitme245 · 25/01/2025 11:30

I had a conversation with my best friend of 25 years the other day and she called me a far right extremist and how my views are scary, dangerous and 'nazi coded'
I was really shocked as I didn't think any of what I said was bad. I'm not a particularly avid supporter of any political party and very much keep opinions to myself. She's very supportive of labour and anti trump and always has been. Usually when she asks me my opinions I just don't want to get into it but I did the other night and now I feel bad.

Here's the breakdown:

  • she sent me an article and told me that Nigel Farage is going to ban abortion eventually if he wins an election. I read the article and pointed out he only suggested lowering the abortion cut off date to 22 weeks (not 24 as it is now). I told her it wasn't the end of the world and it's reasonable if you read his reasons. I also made the point that men shouldn't really be getting involved in abortion law but that what he said wasn't the end of the world.
  • she asked me about immigration and I said that it's great but that we should be prioritising skilled immigrants and have stronger immigration laws. She also asked about asylum seekers and hotels and I said that we should have stronger laws about monitoring people and collecting documentation when people arrive.
  • she sent me and asked about Elon Musk's Nazi salute and I said I didn't interpret it that way
  • I said that immigrants who rape or murder should be deported.

To me this feels really reasonable and not over the top but she really attacked me for it? Now I feel really awkward and uncomfortable talking to her. Is this far right??

You lost me here.

This is the one

There is support for lowering the limit to 22 weeks. Not only Farage has suggested this. I don't like or trust Farage and would never vote Reform, but lowering the abortion limit is not a far right policy.

I didn't say it was.

I said this is just the start of a slippery slope of getting abortion rights severely lowered or removed entirely.

ArtTheClown · 25/01/2025 12:27

No of course you're not far right, OP. It's just that the centre left has been hijacked and now rebrands anyone who disagrees with them as such.

If you're a white Westerner, anything other than self-loathing and suicidal empathy is "nazi coded", and you're very much expected to pay for the sins of the fathers, even if your own ancestors were impoverished peasantry.

Re the Musk thing, here's Macron making much the same gesture:

i think this is why it's probably best keeping political views to yourself rather than discussing with friends.

As a society we appeared to have lost the ability to see nuance and have reasonable debates.

I don't think any of what you have said is far right but I've been told I hold far right views for believing that women should have single sex spaces and sport and believing that we should not have completely open borders.

You're spot on. I enjoy a political debate as it is interesting to hear others views and I can change my views if I hear a reasoned argument. But the vitriol you get from the left (only it seems) if your view isn't exactly their view is bonkers.
I'm a typical floating voter and have voted across the spectrum in my time but the left take the biscuit for being unwilling or unable to engauge in a discussion nowadays.
When I was younger, at my workplace, there were debates every lunchtime about the political issues of the day, I listened with interest as I learnt stuff that I didn't learn at home. I changed my views on somethings. Nowadays people (particularly the left for some reason) will report or block you etc. It's bizarre such people can't entertain a debate.

carrit · 25/01/2025 12:27

I'm not sure it was a Nazi salute. I mean he didn't even put the finger of his left hand to his upper lip while doing so, what a poor effort.

Coffeelovr · 25/01/2025 12:17

We're all far right now

The drawing is counterfactual. The idea the Conservative position in 2008 and 2021 was unchanged is laughable.

locomotive98 · 25/01/2025 12:28

You're not 'far right'. It's a term that the Left use to try to demonise anyone who disagrees with them. What you said sounds entirely reasonable, but your friend has swallowed the propaganda, and if she can't accept that people can hold different opinions from her and isn't prepared to listen to counter arguments, then I fear that the friendship is doomed.

TooBigForMyBoots · 25/01/2025 12:28

My mother always told me not to make myself look foolish by defending a man. The ADL made themselves look foolish defending the antisemite.

What were they thinking?🙈

Katypp · 25/01/2025 12:28

Winterskyfall · 25/01/2025 12:21

I think you are reasonable. I can't stand the whole you don't agree with me therefore you are an extremist & a Nazi. This is said by people who don't believe in free speech and aren't intelligent or educated enough to argue their points.

You are right there. There is only two views on MN, either support Labour unquestioningly or far right Nazi.

BoundaryGirl3939 · 25/01/2025 12:28

I think what you say is common sense.

ArtTheClown · 25/01/2025 12:28

I don't know where to start with this racist BS.

I'm curious as to what part of that you find racist? The sexual assaults happened, why are you so comfortable dismissing them?
That's exactly what makes people lose patience.

It very much is a far right aim, just look at Roe v Wade in the US. They had no plans, it was settled law, then their friendly Supreme Court judges repealed it. The whole right is all about birth rates and replacement theories, which blocking access to Abortion is very much a part of it.

askmenow · 25/01/2025 12:30

She’s trying to shut you down. Your opinions are as valuable as anyone else’s. Not much of a friend if she can’t accept that.
Pretty much the view of any reasonable person excepting the ideological left leaning fantasists.

The Musk gesture I assumed was a triumphant air punch. Too many easily offended loons.

Crumpies · 25/01/2025 12:30

I don’t agree with some of your points and I would never quote Farage or defend Musk BUT your friends attitude is extremely counter productive and some in left have become poisonous when disagreed with. This will only damage their own cause and it’s unfortunate

carrit · 25/01/2025 12:30

Maybe it's best to just deport all the men. They're the ones who cause most of the problems.

AlisonDonut · 25/01/2025 12:30

carrit · 25/01/2025 12:23

The guy who drew that is an "anti-woke" extremist who's on a bit of a crusade about it, to the point of embarrassing himself with bold proclamations on topics he knows nothing about.

Colin Wright? How has he embarassed himself exactly? Which bold proclamations?

Bananagirl23 · 25/01/2025 12:31

I mean you’re clearly defending the views of far right men in powerful positions so I can see where your friend is coming from OP

TENSsion · 25/01/2025 12:31

People have lost the ability to discuss things rationally and objectively. They would rather repeat things that align with their chosen political tribe and call anyone with different opinions names.
My husband and I often disagree of politics and news topics but we also frequently will say “I hadn’t thought of that.” “I hadn’t considered that point of view.” and we move on with our day.
Some people are incredibly primitive in their “in-group/ out-group” instincts though and won’t listen to another perspective or statistics that show an alternative fact.

The Macron link is interesting. I wonder why all the hate from the left when Musk does it but not when Macron does it. Double standards? Two tiers?
Personally it makes no odds to me that either of them touched their heart and saluted the crowd. In my mind they both intended a heartfelt salute to their audience, but sadly some twisted types have to twist Musk's but not the other. Pathetic.

Doloresparton · 25/01/2025 12:32

Bubblyb00b · 25/01/2025 12:25

This feels like such a goady post, like - "look, this lefties says I'm nazi for being completely reasonable".

You can say whatever you want but what Musk did was a nazi salute, there is not other ways to "interpret" it.

I’m a leftie.

I’ve watched the video of Musk three times.
To me it’s not a Nazi salute.
The Nazi salute is forward of the body not sidewards.
He's looks to me to be thumping his heart and gesturing throwing it emphatically to the crowd. He does it after saying thank you.

I’m not a mind reader though so don’t know Musks intentions.

Bestfootforward11 · 25/01/2025 12:32

BallerinaRadio · 25/01/2025 11:55

But how do you now feel about the nazi salute having read this thread?

Exactly. If you ‘didn’t think’ but now see other information available, do you prefer to still not have a view or could you perhaps reflect?

cardibach · 25/01/2025 12:33

'Interpreting' Musk's salute as anything other than what it was - a Nazi salute - means at the very least you are an apologist for some nasty far right views.
She did t say Farage had said to ban a portion, she said she thought it was his end game. He won't go full ban immediately, obviously.
Disliking Trump isn't the province of the left. It's the province of anyone with a moral compass. He's vile.

So in answer to your question, you are misrepresenting a lot here and it's hard to tell what you really think. The salute though...no point in debating with anyone who can't see that.

TENSsion · 25/01/2025 12:33

Bestfootforward11 · 25/01/2025 12:32

Are you joking? I would say that the majority of Mumsnet posters are conservative with a small 'c', with a fairly large proportion of Trump/Farage supporters.

ColourBlueColourPurple · 25/01/2025 12:33

I'd say your views align with a large percentage of people in the UK. Your friend sounds intolerant of anyone who doesn't go along with the hive mind of the far left.
