AIBu to think "Traitors" is horrible?

KnopkaPixie · 24/01/2025 19:26

I do not live in the UK, have no access to BBC media but my mum seems to be quite caught up in it. Apparently it's the grand final tonight.

I've watched the trailer on youtube but it just seems horrible. The information I've got from my mum is a bit garbled but wasn't there a woman vicar on it?

I don't want to sound like, "Outraged of Tumbridge Wells" but...

My mum was yakking on on about lying in a coffin, talking dolls, tarot cards...

I thought it was more like Taskmaster.

It all seems a bit rum to me. It's like, "Eyes Wide Shut" meets "Squid Game."

AIBU "It's just a bit of fun, stop clutching your pearls."
AINBU. "It’s horrible and I get mixed up between Davina McCall and Claudia Winkleman."

@SerenityNowSerenityNow It's because it's their civic duty to let us know how unique and better they are. Happens with any show that a vast majority of people enjoy, someone has to come along and say they don't watch because it's too lowbrow for them. I just hope it gives their self confidence a little boost, because it's obviously lacking!

That's what I suspected......

What's wrong with lowbrow anyway?

LlynTegid · 25/01/2025 08:33

It's a glorified game show and no doubt the BBC will do far too many series as is their normal thing. I don't watch it myself, though if others do I won't criticise them.

CharityShopChic · 25/01/2025 09:00

Agree with others that The Traitors is one of those rare shows which hits the spot for many ages. 19 year old DD and I have watched it together, pretty much the only other thing she watches live is Love Island and I'm just not interested in that.

Anyway, the OP has clearly got the wrong end of the stick having never seen it and has made all sorts of weird assumptions that it's supposed to be frightening (it's not), that the contestants don't know what's going on (they absolutely do), that it has a strong occult/paranormal element (no again) and it's anti-christian and a vicar had no business being in it (weird).

I might go off and start a thread slagging off something I know nothing about either.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 25/01/2025 09:05

I watched the first episode and didn't enjoy it. I love Claudia, but don't like her in this, and I'm not overly keen on programmes with a lot of members of the public in (don't like quiz shows, Goggle Box, Love Island etc). But you know, other people to enjoy it 🤷🏻‍♀️

PuppyMonkey · 25/01/2025 09:09

I'm beginning to think that I must be a Martian.

You definitely sound like one. Think there’s a Martian version dropping next week… Wink

Lambington · 25/01/2025 00:34

Yanbu. It's the worst kind of "bread and circuses" nonsense reality TV.

No, you're thinking of Love Island.

The Traitors is entirely wholesome family fun. I honestly don't know where some posters are getting their daft ideas from.

Bouledeneige · 25/01/2025 09:20

You can't say you don't like it if you've never watched it. I'm not a reality TV person but I really enjoy Traitors. I'm 60 and I watched it with my DD 24 and DS 22 and we have a laugh with a few theories thrown in.

As others have said it's lighthearted and a little bit camp and there's a lot of care for contestants. It's a long way from Squid Game. And the great thing about the Church of England is that they allow vicars to have a sense of humour with their kindness. Harmless fun. But if you're a fire and brimstone Christian I guess it's quite difficult to find much entertainment.

I'd watch it 😂.

MJconfessions · 25/01/2025 09:22

I love it. I just binged the entire season in one night (I skipped the tasks). It’s just like one big social experiment

TheaBrandt · 25/01/2025 09:22

Of all the tv programmes to get agitated about! Dh and i tried to watch love island with our teens now that was bloody awful and depressing. Traitors is a trillion times better than that

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 25/01/2025 09:26

They can enjoy watching us heathens burn when the apocalypse comes!

TheaBrandt · 25/01/2025 09:29

Talked to famous author at a book launch and she was eye rolling at a bad review by someone who ended with “although I have not actually read this book”

Ratri · 25/01/2025 09:44

KnopkaPixie · 25/01/2025 01:18

I'm beginning to think that I must be a Martian.

You’re just someone who got carried away on a tide of outrage based on a total misunderstanding of a popular tv programme you’ve never seen.

As a pp said, it is ‘wholesome family entertainment’. It’s one of the few things that gets a big audience share that has a strong suspense element and happens on old-school linear tv, hence can’t be ‘binged’, and my moody 12 year old and all his friends watch it with their parents.

KnopkaPixie · 24/01/2025 19:36

I know it's an extended parlour game and a bit of a scare at bedtime but:

1.) I'm not paying to watch it from France especially as I'll have to watch the complete progression from start to finish.
2.) I did Ouija boards as a kid and all that kind of stuff freaks me out to this day.

Nobody is asking you to pay to watch it from France. Just suggesting that perhaps you shouldnt start a post about the moral horrors of a TV program YOU HAVEN'T SEEN.
Also, no ouija board so you can lower your pearls.
Oh and it isn't remotely scary. It's actually a bit silly.
Hope that helps.

Well without a vpn you can’t so it’s not as easy as just turn go to iPlayer on your iPad

I'm going off an tangent now but perhaps it is good for me - I have never played a board game in my life. Or a card game. I never went to Brownies, I have no idea what any of you are talking about with all these Werewolf or Cluedo or Wink Murder.

It just never came up.

Yet here you are commenting at length about something you have no clue about. Absolutely cuckoo.

Smallsalt · 25/01/2025 10:06

Phthia · 25/01/2025 00:40

I seem to have missed the bit in the Bible where Jesus said "Thou shalt not have dolls playing nursery rhyme recordings backwards".

The backwards talking dolls were doing nursery rhymes which the competitors had to try to sing down the phone to other players, who also had to sing it whilst running to a recording device to sing what they heard. What they sung was then played forward, to see if it resembled the nursery rhyme and they could identify it.
No occult messages. No devil worshiping.
Just folk with a generally poor ear for music and bad singers, singing to other bad singers with a poor ear for music. Not sinister. Not demonic. Just funny because it was a bit ridiculous and they were bad at itand it was quite difficult.

Well, I think everyone I know here who used to live in the UK has, down the years, made every possible experiment with different types of VPN, to no avail. I gather some have worked in the past, but the BBC iPlayer seems very well protected. It’s BBC 4 I miss!

occultelements · 25/01/2025 10:19

I might start a thread about wildly inaccurate things I imagine could be horrible about TV shows I've never watched:

The explicit sex scenes in Mrs Brown's Boys.
The glorification of gang violence in Gavin & Stacey.
The 'Hunger Games' style fight to decide who wins in Love Island.

Phthia · 25/01/2025 10:19

Ratri · 25/01/2025 01:15

Are you French, OP? It’s basically an extended version the parlour game Loup-Garou, but with a cash prize and presented by a woman with very glossy hair and some excellent jumpers. No supernatural dimension whatsoever, and the few stabs at Scottish Baronial Gothic (which are pretty heavily ironic anyway) were foiled this season by blazing sun most days.

Blazing sun in Scotland in what was a lousy summer? I'm not sure you were watching the same series I was.

Edited

Tbf the sun was what I noticed, so much so that i commented on it to dh. I think Scotland had sun in early summer until the jet stream moved.

Anyway, what a finale! Though personally I thought the series 2 finale just pipped it.

CharityShopChic · 25/01/2025 10:32

Looking at the trees it seemed it was filmed April/May rather than the height of summer. And May was OK-ish, better than July and August. I would imagine that all the overhead drone shots of the castle and the cars arriving/leaving are filmed in a single day when it is nice weather.

The task they did with the chess board was filmed on a very wet day, Claudia had a brolly and they were all soaked.

CharityShopChic · 25/01/2025 10:33

Also, on a film set, they can make it look very sunny with massive lights even when it's very dull.

Oioisavaloy27 · 25/01/2025 10:43

SprinkleOfSunak · 25/01/2025 07:48

I think it’s a complete load of crap and so I choose not to watch it.

Why you on a thread about it then? That doesn't make sense.
