AIBu to think "Traitors" is horrible?

KnopkaPixie · 24/01/2025 19:26

I do not live in the UK, have no access to BBC media but my mum seems to be quite caught up in it. Apparently it's the grand final tonight.

I've watched the trailer on youtube but it just seems horrible. The information I've got from my mum is a bit garbled but wasn't there a woman vicar on it?

I don't want to sound like, "Outraged of Tumbridge Wells" but...

My mum was yakking on on about lying in a coffin, talking dolls, tarot cards...

I thought it was more like Taskmaster.

It all seems a bit rum to me. It's like, "Eyes Wide Shut" meets "Squid Game."

AIBU "It's just a bit of fun, stop clutching your pearls."
AINBU. "It’s horrible and I get mixed up between Davina McCall and Claudia Winkleman."

I've not watched it but I know who the traitor is as I've got insider info, so I won't be watching it anyway.

Insider info

That's shared with a few million others 🤣🤣🤣

ViolinsPlayGentlyOn · 24/01/2025 23:10

YABU to decide you don’t like something you’ve never actually watched.

malmi · 24/01/2025 23:20

No. I'm not Amish or a Jehovah's Witness or anything like that.

Are lesser denominations the only ones who play board games?

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 24/01/2025 23:24

I'm willing to be proved wrong and it was all good fun.

Why should people bother? You've clearly already made your mind up.

Plus if you've not watched it then none of it will make sense anyway!

Autumnleaves82 · 24/01/2025 23:28

Strange comment re:Christianity, especially if you've not watched it. I'm a Christian and don't have a problem with it. We've really enjoyed watching it as a family.

It's very similar to 'Mafia', that has been played in Christian (& non-religious) youth groups for decades. I think you have to remember it's a game and everyone enters it knowing it's a game (fully aware that people they become friends with might be lying to them as part of the game). Although there's deception, it's very different to deception in 'real life'. All the players know this will be happening. Also no one chooses to be a traitor, so it's nothing to do with anyone's morals, etc. They just have to play the role they are given.

Hope everyone enjoyed it who watched tonight. We've saved 'Uncloaked' to watch tomorrow.

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 24/01/2025 22:28

I haven’t really watched it but I have as strong feelings against it as you do!!! Just watched the end of it and seems so stupid. Breaking news - someone put on a fake Welsh accent the whole time..

If you've not watched it then of course it doesn't make sense 🙄

But clearly everyone else who watched the first episode understood it enough/saw some point of it in order to continue watching it. I watched the first episode and didn’t see the point of it and didn’t continue.

anyway, clearly me and OP are in the minority as it is one of the most watched and loved shows ever to have graced BBC I believe.

goldmywrath · 24/01/2025 19:45

There is more than one traitor. Everybody watching the programme knows who they are. Your insider info is not worth much.

AmusedBouched · 24/01/2025 23:37

Ah - so someone above has said it is like the game Mafia. Is it actually? I watched the last episode this evening and I likened it to an improv class - given the fake jobs and fake accents etc.

i have attempted to play Mafia with my cousins a couple of times at their request, and again didn’t understand the point of it.

I think I might be autistic or something.

Delphiniumandlupins · 24/01/2025 23:39

I don't know Mafia but our family and friends play Werewolf and it's a bit like that.

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 24/01/2025 23:40

But clearly everyone else who watched the first episode understood it enough/saw some point of it in order to continue watching it. I watched the first episode and didn’t see the point of it and didn’t continue.

But that's not what you said.....
You said you watched the end of it and it seemed stupid. I simply suggested that by watching just the end would mean you didn't have the context.

Watching the first episode and deciding it's not for you makes so much more sense!!

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 24/01/2025 23:41

OP, you realise they don’t actually murder each other?

It’s just a laugh. They don’t even REALLY manipulate each other - they’re just playing a role in a game. They come out and say nice things about each other. It’s all very jolly.

TheaBrandt · 24/01/2025 23:47

It’s goid fun. It’s a rare program that you can watch with teens and all get into it. If you have teens you know how few and far between such programmes are.

Also you are quite ridiculous slagging off something you haven’t even watched 🙄🙄🙄. Fair enough to have an opinion on a program but not one you haven’t even watched yourself!

Juliagreeneyes · 24/01/2025 23:53

Wtf? It’s a version of the party parlour game Wink Murder, or Murder in the Dark, often played by children (didn’t you ever play Murder in the Dark at school or a birthday party or at Brownies or whatever?)

And no more scary or occult than a game of Cluedo. It’s very much family viewing - you could let your kids watch it from about 8/9 upwards. My preteen DD and her friends love it! It’s basically all about human interaction, strategy and guesswork - it is basically the BBC version of a family board game (and you can indeed buy a board game version).

The coffins and dolls etc. are just basic campy Halloween stuff. You probably wouldn’t show it to a toddler or a 5 year old, but it’s no more occult than Scooby-Doo. It’s just quite fun, kitsch and enjoyable entertainment, really.

HeadacheEarthquake · 24/01/2025 23:57

KnopkaPixie · 24/01/2025 19:50

I probably don't. Keep me informed. I'm willing to to be educated. It seems to be a big cultural phenomenon in the UK but I'm out of the loop and it all sounded really weird.

Is it just high kitch?

It's cluedo meets big brother. It's harmless. You'd get worse playing monopoly with your family.

It's a game of deception. Like poker, risk, rummy....

Ouija boards???? Are you very superstitious or religious?

HeadacheEarthquake · 24/01/2025 23:58

KnopkaPixie · 24/01/2025 23:07

Go on then, who won. Is it over yet? I'm willing to be proved wrong and it was all good fun. I've tried to watch other bits of stuff for free and it seems to be all very high camp.

Don't ask who won, watch it for the ride

healthybychristmas · 25/01/2025 00:01

Are you really not worried that you sound stupid when you are judgemental about something you know absolutely nothing about?

SlapTheMelon · 25/01/2025 00:02

In the oversexualised world we live in, I find the traitors so wholesome and fun. Then I change the channel to love island and I despair and cringe. Now that show to me feels so out of date.

Thankyou for your guidance. I never expected this amount of replies. I just get uneasy about these type of reality TV shows. I wonder about how much is real and how much is staged?

Are we all being taken for a ride and the lying is on a different level? That's why I didn't like the vicar taking part. The Stanford Prison Experiment which I mentioned earlier was who is lying to whom is lying to who is real and to who is what?

The whole idea that the contestants went in completely oblivious to what would be the end result is a bit unfeasible to me. It's staged entertainment with added bits of paranormal rubbish which sends some people over the edge.

The.much quoted "Ouija Board" reference was because I did Ouija boards as a teenager and I don't know whether it was the collective energy of us all trying to move the counter or not but it terrified me and I hate all paranormal things now.

Well, you say, "You're a Christian. That's just another sky fairy." I don't care at this point. I don't like anything to do with...you get my point. (Hopefully.)

But it’s not paranormal in the slightest. I feel like you’re not listening. There is no occult. No Ouja boards. No paranormal. No sex. No cruelty. It’s a jolly family friendly game.

TheaBrandt · 25/01/2025 00:12

It’s basically wink murder that we used to play at Brownies jazzed up. Of all the grim depressing over sexualised programs there actually are on tv this is one of the few wholesome ones so you are making yourself look like a abit of a prat op.

Divastrout · 25/01/2025 00:12

Allswellthatendswelll · 24/01/2025 19:28

😂 maybe just watch it.

It's basically a slightly camp, extended parlour game. I don't like reality TV as a rule but I love it. The people on it seem, for the most part, nice as well.

Edited

Just watch it or not
First Post nails it

LoafofSellotape · 25/01/2025 00:26

KnopkaPixie · 24/01/2025 19:36

I know it's an extended parlour game and a bit of a scare at bedtime but:

1.) I'm not paying to watch it from France especially as I'll have to watch the complete progression from start to finish.
2.) I did Ouija boards as a kid and all that kind of stuff freaks me out to this day.

What's a ouji board got to do with the game?

KnopkaPixie · 25/01/2025 00:27

I'm going off an tangent now but perhaps it is good for me - I have never played a board game in my life. Or a card game. I never went to Brownies, I have no idea what any of you are talking about with all these Werewolf or Cluedo or Wink Murder.

It just never came up.

No scaring whatsoever involved, and no summoning up the spirits. Where on earth do you get all these weird ideas from?

I've not watched it but I know who the traitor is as I've got insider info, so I won't be watching it anyway.

You do realise that whoever gave you the "insider info" was taking the piss, don't you? We all know who the traitors are from the beginning; finding out who they are is 100% not the point of the programme, at least so far as the viewers are concerned.
