AIBu to think "Traitors" is horrible?

I do not live in the UK, have no access to BBC media but my mum seems to be quite caught up in it. Apparently it's the grand final tonight.

I've watched the trailer on youtube but it just seems horrible. The information I've got from my mum is a bit garbled but wasn't there a woman vicar on it?

I don't want to sound like, "Outraged of Tumbridge Wells" but...

My mum was yakking on on about lying in a coffin, talking dolls, tarot cards...

I thought it was more like Taskmaster.

It all seems a bit rum to me. It's like, "Eyes Wide Shut" meets "Squid Game."

AIBU "It's just a bit of fun, stop clutching your pearls."
AINBU. "It’s horrible and I get mixed up between Davina McCall and Claudia Winkleman."

I watched the first series and enjoyed it but can't be bothered to watch anymore as it takes up too much time.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 24/01/2025 20:19

Why didn’t you start your post asking people to explain it to you rather than coming on and saying it was disgusting, inappropriate for a vicar to be on, horrible etc. Don’t judge something if you don’t know anything about it

UpTheAnte · 24/01/2025 20:24

It's a televised game of werewolf, not a seance or a pact with the devil 😆

SnowFrogJelly · 24/01/2025 20:27

Of course it's horrible that's part of the fun!

Er, yes, it is a big deal. 10 million people have watched the series premiere this year.

The dolls sang a nursery rhyme backwards and you had to guess what it was. The coffins were a prop that someone had to get into for about 10 minutes so the others could find them in some woods. The tasks are mostly answering questions and finding money in trees. I'm not quite sure where the ouija board bit came from...

Thankyou. So it's a real success? Is it Endomol? The Big Brother people? No, I don't work for the BBC or any other media.

I just got into a weird conversation with my mum and wondered what it was all about. It just sounded a bit strange the way she was describing it.

Maybe I should have checked that there weren't other threads about it on other boards but I just didn't really like the concept from what she was saying.

Yes. I'm being unreasonable. You've all told me what's going on.

Its a load of rubbish ! Cannot fathom how people enjoy this?

Oioisavaloy27 · 24/01/2025 20:29

If you don't watch it and can't watch it how on earth are you commenting?

JaninaDuszejko · 24/01/2025 20:30

I've not watched it but it's clearly a phenomenon and Claudia's wardrobe is generally agreed to be fabulous. And your Mum is describing it very strangely because I know it's basically wink murder and not some kind of warped TV show.

Bumblebeestiltskin · 24/01/2025 20:31

KnopkaPixie · 24/01/2025 19:36

I know it's an extended parlour game and a bit of a scare at bedtime but:

1.) I'm not paying to watch it from France especially as I'll have to watch the complete progression from start to finish.
2.) I did Ouija boards as a kid and all that kind of stuff freaks me out to this day.

Where did you get that it's a 'bit if a scare'? 😂

Blimey, your life must be incredibly dull to be starting a thread about something you've never watched and actually don't know much about.

Because people like different things 🤷🏼‍♀️

I like the concept but a lot of the good people get banished and murdered and we’re left with the dregs.

I’m not really rooting for any of the remainder, except Alexander a bit.

I think at the end of S1 one mumsnetter dubbed it survival of the thickest!

Damn, I missed the bit where they had the orgy

It might be just me, but is anyone getting vibes Frankie and Alexander might turn into a romance?

You said you live in France.
There's been two series of the French version already. Its called Les Traîtres

GameOfJones · 24/01/2025 20:52

It's not scary at all! Ok there were some "creepy dolls" this series but they sang nursery rhymes backwards and the contestants had to work out what they were singing. And three people were in "coffins" above ground for about ten minutes and the other contestants had to find them.

It's basically a murder mystery, where the audience know who the murderers are so the entertainment is in watching the rest of the contestants try to figure it out.

I actually find it very compelling viewing and it's rare to find a TV programme nowadays that hooks you with such a simple premise. I enjoy the gamesmanship and discussing with DH how we would play the game if we were in it. It is popular for a reason.

😂 Yeah, that is kind of the point..that the viewers know who the traitors are.

Oh dear it just goes to show that I've never watched it and I'm clueless to the format. Still it's giving you a laugh at my expense 😂
I'm reading Denise Welch's book at the moment, The Unwelcome Visitor and there's just an accent of a hint there.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 24/01/2025 20:55

Is this whole thread a wind up?

Why do you give a shit about a program you don't watch (or any program) in a country you don't live in?

Thankyou. I realise that I'm coming across as very stupid but I just wanted other people's perspectives on it. It just sounded horrible but it's only a TV show after all. I live in a different world in many ways.

Why didn't you ask then? Instead of being a wind up with provocative statements?

AmusedBouched · 24/01/2025 21:03

YABVU - Davina McCall is tolerable.

Claudia Winkleman is the most annoying female TV presenter to have ever existed.

MrsPeterHarris · 24/01/2025 21:06

Allswellthatendswelll · 24/01/2025 19:28

😂 maybe just watch it.

It's basically a slightly camp, extended parlour game. I don't like reality TV as a rule but I love it. The people on it seem, for the most part, nice as well.

Edited

This!

Wordau · 24/01/2025 21:19

It's reality TV made for the middle classes, with a real mix of real people, full of tongue in cheek campy creepiness and lots of fun twists and turns. Claudia is brilliant.
