I haven't seen anything in articles I have read about Axel Rudakubana today about a mental health assessment. His behaviour is so extreme, that it is difficult not to suspect he is suffering from an untreated mental health condition. Does anyone else think that mental illness may be at the root of his horrific crimes?

Of course it isn't. If he was found to have any mental illness then his defence team would've tried to use it.

He is just a very, very bad person.

sonnunny · 23/01/2025 20:18

He was in ashworth for a while and will have been assessed in depth

CharlotteRumpling · 23/01/2025 20:18

No.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 23/01/2025 20:20

Probably somewhere he's 'not right in the head.' But honestly I'm not sure it's anything treatment could do - he's proud of what he did. To me he comes across like he's trying too hard - he wants people to realise he wanted to do these horrific things, and not 'blame it' on mental illness etc.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 23/01/2025 20:20

I think that there has to be something fundamentally wrong with someone for them to commit such horrible crimes.

There is clearly something very wrong with him. He's not wired up right.

However. That doesn't mean the person should not face the consequences of their actions.

Not meeting the threshold for an insanity defence does not mean there is nothing wrong with a person.

Nobody who has a healthy mind commits atrocities.

(This should not be twisted to suggest to me that I think that everyone with mental health issues or personality disorders is dangerous)

UndermyShoeJoe · 23/01/2025 20:20

Some times people are just evil. Just like people are assholes.

You don’t have to have a mental illness or a disability to be an arsehole or evil.

Far to many labels being slapped on terrible people to try and excuse or reason for their shitty behaviour.

His an evil murderer of little girls. Zero excuses.

Dramatic · 23/01/2025 20:20

You've got to assume he's a psychopath because no one with a shred of empathy could do anything close to this. But I don't know if that counts as mental illness.

miniaturepixieonacid · 23/01/2025 20:21

I would say he does. I don't think anyone does anything that evil and completely random without severe psychological issues. But I don't think it's an excuse and I don't think it should have any bearing on the outcome.

youngoldthing · 23/01/2025 20:21

He is an evil cunt.

i hope that helps.

FraidSo · 23/01/2025 20:23

His obsessive mask wearing is odd. I presume he thinks there’s something wrong with his teeth, judging by the mugshot which is the only time his lower face isn’t covered by a mask or a jumper pulled upwards. I rather wish the judge had not allowed the mask. Just to make him as uncomfortable as possible.

Lowcarbonated · 23/01/2025 20:24

I think he's quite clearly mentally ill but they couldn't have another hoohaa over this case as it's so awful and so high profile, and has become so far reaching with the far right honing in on it. It could cause another load of civil unrest.

sonnunny · 23/01/2025 20:24

As previously said he was held in Ashworth for several months. They will have done every assessment needed

ComeHomeSoonPlease · 23/01/2025 20:24

There is a thread running on this. About the killer saying he is ill.

comewhinewith · 23/01/2025 20:24

I seem to remember the judge saying that he was diagnosed with high functioning autism, but that had no relevance to his actions (as a parent of a child with autism I was glad the judge made that disconnect between autism & that violence).

So he must have had plenty of assessments and there was very little mitigation offered by the defence.

TheTraitors123 · 23/01/2025 20:25

He is pure evil. That is all. He also made enough poison to kill over 12 thousand people and they found terrorism propaganda in his bedroom. I hope someone gets to him in prison for what he put those poor little girls through.

CharlotteRumpling · 23/01/2025 20:25

His defence team would have mentioned any mental illness. They didn't.

lakesandplains · 23/01/2025 20:28

I'm not in favour of the death penalty whatsoever and wouldn't vote for it to be brought back but i do admit this type of case makes you wonder - we'll be paying for this evil person for then rest of his, doubtless, long life.

spoonfulofsugar1 · 23/01/2025 20:28

No I dont. I think he's evil and there's a difference. I think its natural to want to say there's mental health issues as it makes it easier to understand, but that provides an element of justification.
I believe he is just evil and there's no other word for it. Its hard to say that.

InkHeart2024 · 23/01/2025 20:29

I think people want to believe that this kind of behaviour is down to a diagnosable mental health disorder like psychosis or schizophrenia which can kind of 'explain' why a person might do this. But usually it's extremely disordered personality types. PD do come under mental health conditions and appear in the DSM 5 but that doesn't mean it's a treatable mental illness or that the person doesn't have capacity or didn't make a clear sighted decision to act. I'm sure this person has a disordered personality. But he also chose to do what he did.

Oh I don’t know. The people sharing his prison will probably get to him. Normally I’d condemn that, but not in this case.

I think maybe they felt thete was no point. The same thing happened with Peter Sutcliffe. Clearly an utter psychopath but still found guilty of murder. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up in Broadmoor.

lakesandplains · 23/01/2025 20:32

Can't help but agree @devildeepbluesea it's like a time to kill, some people...there's no chance this person is ever going to be a worthwhile human.

Paradoes · 23/01/2025 20:32

A bad person with a lack of soul or heart. Absolutely no justification for the crime and deaths he decided to do.

Yes me too. It's obvious he's guilty, he has murdered children with no explanation or remorse. I think in some very rare cases like this I think maybe it should be an option. What is the point of him?

Savemefromwetdog · 23/01/2025 20:34

He was deemed fit to stand trial. He’ll have been seen by many professionals.

Sometimes, people are just evil.
