Following from the (ver popular!) thread about butter I started s few days ago, I decided I want a butter dish to start keeping part of the butter outside the fridge.
Need inspo, how about a show me a pic of your butter dish thread? 😆

I was given this one for Christmas - it's lovely but doesn't go with anything else I have.

I'm contemplating returning it before the extended returns window closes next week. But feel guilty as it was from a good friend who thinks my kitchen needs 'cheering up'. I disagree and love my plain ware.

Ah, no, don't return it! Just looking at it must make you smile, so worth its weight in gold, really😉

SmudgeButt · 23/01/2025 18:54

While I like the idea of butter dishes I can't stand them in practice. That's because my DP takes the lid off and puts it down on the table that might be covered in crumbs (he manages to get them everywhere). And then puts the lid back on so crumbs get in the butter. Alternatively he manages to smear butter right to the edge so when the lid goes on the table some butter goes with it.

So I've given up and just use a small plate. Much tidier.

I have a glass one...not this exact one but very similar.
AL-FAHMI Rectangle & Round Glass Butter Dish - Stylish Butter with Lid Easy to Use and 100% Food Safe (Rectangle) : Amazon.co.uk: Home & Kitchen

I've never been sure of how it should be used though...I use it with the tray at the bottom but DH, whenever he cleans it and puts a new pat of butter in, always stores it with the butter in the bowl bit and tray as a lid.

Does it matter?

I have a similar one and use it both ways depending on my mood when refilling it😆
I would really like one of the French ones. Maybe one day, when this one breaks. I suspect it will never break as I knows I don't love it

I also have a Le Creuset one in red.

I will have to look for one similar to yours. My kitchen has dozens of red accents.

This is my current butterdish.

This is mine :)

This is mine too but blue

Wherehavetheyallgone · 23/01/2025 20:52

This one....can put cool water in the base in summer. The butter can stay out of fridge yet be spreadable. I think it's from the US so a bit narrow for a UK 250g block of butter. But since most of them have shrunk to 200g, they're a better fit. Had to be a sliver lining to CoL!😀

I previously had one with a shallow base and deep lid. One hot summer I just had a lake of butter trickling over the worktop, so only buy the container type now.

Can't remember where mine's from, but I've had it a long time, amazingly, cos I break everything.

I’ve been keeping my butter out for years. I have this one. It’s Cath Kidston and it’s great.

The butter isn’t years old, just the butter dish.

I don’t know why but there is something comforting about a butter dish. It reminds me of my grandma.

I think I'm being thick, but what is it meant to be?

It’s quite hard to see from my picture , I’ll admit .

It’s s whale, and his tail is the handle on the lid.
the dish at the bottom has waves along the sides.

it is really lovely and a nice size, not too big.

A friend of mine has the same one and when she saw mine, she said “obviously a mumsnetter “!!!

Ophy83 · 23/01/2025 21:20

Also Le Creuset but got it for a fiver in an antique shop!

AuntieDen · 23/01/2025 21:37

ChanelBoucle · 23/01/2025 08:08

Mine ☺️
Bought it twenty years ago, still going strong. Tempted by a Le Creuset now though!

also had that one about 20 years. It does feel a bit bland seeing some of the others on the thread though

😳

I had to look away sharply, it triggers my trypophobia!

Me too 😩

Horses7 · 23/01/2025 21:41

I’ve got 2 plain cream butter dishes with lids as one can always go in dishwasher after use. I used to use spreadable but unsure how healthy it is. Butter dishes kept in a cupboard so butter is always soft. I even have butter knives too!

XiCi · 23/01/2025 21:42

Loving some of these butter dishes, especially love the buddha one 😊. This is mine...

We used to have a lovely kitchen shop in Durham and I bought these over a few years. They are French and different sizes for different packs of butter.

Stanislas · 23/01/2025 21:45

This is such a cheering thread

Tinysarah1985 · 23/01/2025 21:48

I've got the le creuset one in teal. It was £15 from TK Maxx.

anotherusernameforthis · 23/01/2025 22:06

JennyTals · 23/01/2025 18:26

Do you keep these on the fridge ?

No - out on the side so that the butter is soft to spread. I don’t put a whole block out at once though, I slice it into 3 or 4 chunks and put one out at a time - we don’t use that much butter!

Easily keeps for a week at room temperature without going bad. Sometimes in the summer it is too hot and has to go in the fridge, but very rarely.
