My whole family forgot my birthday

Oopsadaisy92 · 22/01/2025 14:31

Kind of light hearted but my brother, my parents and most importantly my DH have all forgotten to wish me happy birthday today. At time of writing it's 14.30.

Just to confirm my birthday is on the 22nd of January... I haven't got my dates mixed up and it's like the 21st today or something??

Also - any ideas on being petty? I feeling like letting them all know at this point needs something big so it doesn't look desperate for attention 🤣

You might want to edit that photo as it's got your husband's name at the top?

Happy birthday OP, hope the guilt presents coming your way make up for it.

I need to watch Sixteen Candles again, haven't watched that for years!

Eek technophobe here how do I do that?!

Nothing to say from me except to say Happy Birthday 🎂🌹

Netcam · 22/01/2025 17:17

Happy Birthday 🎂. Mine today too, been working all day.

Think someone has reported it for you as it's gone!

So it's not normal. It's my 29th and only my mother has forgotten my birthday once before (18th)

Yep I spoke with my DH yesterday about it. And the day before too I think...

Surely he will remember at some point before the day is over, it’s very odd that he has forgotten if you only mentioned it to him yesterday!

I'm more amused than I am upset

Then it's OK, and I guess your family knows that you won't be devastated. So long as they love you and show their appreciation in other ways, who cares about birthdays.

Doloresparton · 22/01/2025 17:23

Happy birthday 🎂
If you’re 29 today then your dh better not forget your 30th next year.
Start planning now.

SoMuchBadAdvice · 22/01/2025 17:25

Happy Birthday.

swimlyn · 22/01/2025 17:26

Oh dear.

Join the club!

My birthday is close to Christmas/New Year and is almost always overlooked by all.

OSU · 22/01/2025 17:32

Happy birthday OP and so sorry to you and everyone else on here who has had their birthdays forgotten. On the plus side as you are in London I really hope you take yourself to an amazing restaurant tonight and maybe the theatre and have WHATEVER you want.

I never quite understand the birthday posts on MN.
Have you asked for any presents? Mentioned going out for a meal or doing something special for dinner?
If the answer is no and you were just waiting to see whether or not they remembered, then I feel you are partly to blame.

I feel the same. I don't understand how it happens because surely, in the normal course of life, when people are talking about a meal plan/whether to take a trip/when to schedule the dentist, like "normal life planning chats" someone says "oh yes it's my birthday this week we should go here" or whatever? Like how is there not a week or so lead-in time to say "shit I need to buy them a card and present"?

Who are all these people waiting to see if someone remembers, like it's a test? Life is busy, it's very normal to talk about upcoming events, isn't it???

Instakilogram · 22/01/2025 17:40

Happy Birthday OP @Oopsadaisy92 ! 🎂🥂🍾 💐

Well her mother gave birth to her so you'd think that would be a significant date for her.

RawBloomers · 22/01/2025 17:41

Happy Birthday, OP! CakeGinFlowers

To play devil’s advocate - when you’re in a different location without all the normal cues around you, it’s relatively easy to compartmentalize part of your life without really realizing you’ve done so. One of the reasons that working away can often be a strain on a marriage.

Which isn’t to say you shouldn’t be upset, OP. I would be. Your DH should be more cognizant of this and have put something in place to make sure he didn’t slip up. But it may not be as much of an indication of a lack of care about you enjoying yourself as it would be if he forgot when he was back home.

Calamitousness · 22/01/2025 17:41

Ah that’s really shit. You do not need to remind any of them or provide any prompt to what you expect. This is basic level. My husband used to work away and when he did he always made sure to buy a card and gifts beforehand and leave with kids/my mum, and flowers would arrive pre-ordered on the day. If he could contact me he would but he couldn’t always. So no excuses, your expectations are totally reasonable. Your parents have lost the plot, I can’t imagine how they forgot.

Iloveacurry · 22/01/2025 17:43

Happy birthday op!

Cocktails sound like a fabulous idea!

I think you should video call your husband with cocktail in hand and sing happy birthday to yourself! (Possibly with a cardboard cut-out of George Clooney or whoever your fancy is, in the background!)
Happy 29th Birthday!

Your bar is very low!
You don't think she should expect a "Happy birthday!"?

LoveRicePudding · 22/01/2025 17:47

Happy Birthday! How about you invite yourself to a fancy dinner, make a photo of a nice little cake with a single candle and send it to your DH before you go to sleep with a text : Happy Birthday to me!
Petty but satisfying. As for your family, I'm so sorry, it's awful.

My husband and teen kids totally disregarded my birthday last month. Husband went to work came home, took calls until about 6.30 without greeting me when he got home. I told them all how upset I was that not one of them had said happy birthday to me or had given me a card. It hurt because I make an effort when it’s their birthday. I had said in the week that I wanted to go to a certain restaurant- we didn’t go. My husband’s birthday is in Feb and I really want to just ignore it but I feel bad about doing it.

Edited

Ignore all of theor birthdays. Return the energy!

@Oopsadaisy92

Could you send him a text along the lines of "I've been thinking about what I would like to do for my birthday, shall we go to "insert name of restaurant you both enjoy" the weekend after you get back?"

Dutchhouse14 · 22/01/2025 17:53

Happy Birthday OP!
You are taking it in very much better than I would.
I do hope your family and husband remembers your birthday. No excuses for it really, especially as you've talked about it.
I'd treat myself to something lovely.
Also like the ideas up thread about sending memory tests and photo shop photos on SM!
I would also be "forgetting" anyones birthday who never remembered mine, one strike and your out!
Your DM forgetting your 18th is terrible imo, my DC would never have forgiven me!
Happy Birthday

ChemicalStatement · 22/01/2025 17:54
