Grooming gangs being labelled as "Muslim grooming gangs"

1000 replies

Olga009933 · 19/01/2025 17:48

Why is religious heritage of child sex offenders only mentioned in headlines when the offenders are of south Asian and predominantly Muslim heritage.
Why not just label them as "grooming gangs" or "Asian grooming gangs" (if wanting to be be specific).
Just thinking and wondering about the thousands of white British and presumably non-Muslim sex offenders who make the news. How many of them are labelled "Christian sex attacker" or "Jewish pervert" etc? Why is the religious heritage of a sex offender only mentioned why the offenders are of Muslim background?
If mentioning religion for one particular demographic then surely its only fair to mention the religious heritage of them all?

Because the girls were seen as "other" therefore fair game

Yes, the headlines aren't othering the perpetrators, they were treating those different from them with disdain to the extreme.

This is my whole point! Thank you :)

Yes clearly the Muslim Pakistani men chose their targets by picking out the bits of Islam and twisting it to suit their purposes. Eg they could rape non Muslim girls and would not go to hell, whereas they would if the girls were Muslim. They used that to justify and excuse their actions. Education is therefore essential so that this twisting of a faith does not happen again to excuse crimes.

Twiney2 · 19/01/2025 18:26

No religion advocates abusing anybody. People can be twisted independent of faith.

You are correct religion doesn't advocate abusing anyone, however certain ideologies can be taught to people from a young age. You are more likely to treat women as second class citizens if your community does. (If that's what your parents, aunties, uncles, grandparents, cousins, neighbours and friends believe).

Abuse in the Catholic Church, whether sexual abuse or the terrible treatment of single mothers at the Magdalen laundries, religion is always mentioned. The religion may not be a cause of that abuse per se, but it is a factor. Same is true here.

It was an over sensitivity about mentioning the ethnic and religious origins of these particular gangs that caused the abuse to carry on uncontrolled for so long in the first place.

Nailed it. OP seriously crack a book.

The proliferation of these gangs was culture based and the way they looked on poor white British girls as trash.

Your wokeness is misplaced and ignorant.

The majority of grooming gangs are white:

What a time for British white men who are groomers!

Oh but but but…. there are white men who are dirty bastard perverts as well, what about them? 🙄

I need to read the holy book in order to say anything with confidence. Forgive me for inaccuracies here ....

There are things in the book that are maybe not perpetuating abuse - but are highly questionable regarding what it calls followers to do in the name of Islam, how it views those who are not followers and finally, the marriage to an underage child referenced in said book.

It wasn't because of any particular teaching within Islam. They're clearly don't adhere to their own teachings and commit gravely sinful acts according to their own religion. But, as I said, their targets were picked because they were seen as less than. If you had groups of Catholics raping groups of Protestants, they would be acting in direct opposition to their religious teachings, but if that pattern emerged it would have to be considered as one aspect at least of the animating forces behind such violence. Its basically "we would never dream of doing this to our own brothers and sisters, but these people are subhuman and therefore exempt for normal standards of conduct and regard".

She will just see a Muslim? You mean a brown skinned person from the Indian subcontinent. If the same girl sees any of the Muslim men in my white European Chechen community she would see a Muslim. Albeit possibly without even realising. Its downright ignorant to assume a person's religion by their ethnic appearance. For the record I have white skin, blue eyes and light brown hair. So do all all my brothers and many other men in our community.
Would they "look Muslim"? Mmmm...

It's the women and girls who 'look' most Muslim, as the Islamic dress of many is recognisable. And there's less respect from Muslim men for women who don't conform to certain religious expectations. It's not a huge leap to say those are the ones targeted as they are believed to be lacking.

DeepFatFried · 19/01/2025 18:34

In general, OP, I think your point stands, and the media are getting better at not using descriptors that are irrelevant to the crime - to avoid racist / sexist / homophobic stereotyping.

However, in this very particular version of the crime, it IS men of one group taking a view to target girls of another group. And they have been using their networks within their particular sub communities to both perpetrate their crimes and avoid capture. Unfortunately, their identity is also noteworthy and relevant specifically BECAUSE a fear of racism was a barrier to preventing these crimes when they were first revealed.

In this case I don't see the problem being the naming the identity of these criminals, because it IS relevant, but with wider society being racists and the Tommy Robinsons of the world seizing on this particular crime to stir up hatred against everyone with that identity.

We have to be honest about the nature and context of crimes, and we have to stand up to racism and xenophobia. Both at the same time.

arcticpandas · 19/01/2025 18:35

A large network of muslim (most Pakistani) men who did this. I think it's relevant. Also, imagine a large group of English men doing this in another country. Ofcourse their nationality would be outed.

andIsaid · 19/01/2025 18:36

Olga009933 · 19/01/2025 17:54

Exactly! This is what I mean. It's almost as though the word Muslim is thrown into the mix to deliberately feed the likes of Tommy Robinson type mentalities.
Given that the overwhelming majority of child sex offenders in UK prisons are white and presumably from some kind of Code or otherwise "Christian" heritage or ancestral background, why is Their religious affiliatiom never mention? Is it because they're not Muslim?!

If you had gang of white, Christian men who targeted young Muslim girls it would be a feature of the headline, because it is also a feature of the crime.

In this case, the gang targeted a specific group of young, white, non muslim girls. Both their religion and the girls colour were specific to this particular crime.

Atlasvue · 19/01/2025 18:37

Pretty sure I’ve seen ‘Catholic priest’ mentioned in relation to child sex offences. It wasn’t just old, white male.

I was more assuming by dress than colour. But you do you.

sunshine244 · 19/01/2025 18:37

If you want to stop crime you need to first try to understand it. Where religion is a factor hiding that wouldn't help at all.

Christian priests abusing children, Pakistani Muslim gangs attacking children. The common factor in each case was the religion. Also cover up by people in authority who knew what was happening.

People from all backgrounds might abuse children. But the vast majority are individual people, not working together. In the Pelicot trial I don't remember hearing there was a commonality in the same way.

Katy7889 · 19/01/2025 18:38

The grooming gangs of the post industrial towns were made up of Mirpuri Pakistani men, 1st or 2nd generation.

It may be less offensive to Muslims to say ‘Pakistani grooming gangs’ but the Pakistanis from Mirpuri are Muslim.

Porridgeislife · 19/01/2025 18:38

Olga009933 · 19/01/2025 18:16

If its about Muslim grooming gangs, why are we seeing these gangs in other Muslim communities? Why confined to the Pakistani community? This suggests to me the problem is more around cultural mindsets than any religion.

There’s a pretty clear overlap of countries where women have very few rights, other minorities have very few rights and countries where Islam is the predominant religion. I don’t know why we pretend that leaving the cultural
environment you grew up with suddenly erases all cultural programming.

There’s been problems of the same nature in Bristol involving Somali gangs which are allegedly ongoing.

Not sure how religion plays a part or fits into their ethnic or racial demographic though.

Are we supposed to turn a blind eye to way some Muslim countries treat women?

Against the backdrop of that I think that there is a conversation to be had.

Not all Men.

Not all Muslim Men, but some, and to protect victims where there is a commonality it needs to be named without fear of being called racist. Otherwise we create sacred castes.

And yes before someone says I know that the majority of sex offenders in this country are white, hardly surprising given that we are a majority white country.

@arcticpandas Absolutely.

Do you think these poor girls who were being abused could tell the difference and are therefore ignorant?

Spot on. To shoot Tommy Robinson's fox we need to be open and upfront about what happened and why and for enablers to take responsibility/face consequences.

Elseaknows · 19/01/2025 18:40

It boils down to the fact that their victims are seen as less than (to them). They are called "Muslim grooming gangs" because they are from that community within the area. (Despite not practicing proper Islamic teachings).
That's not something to get pressed about. What you should be upset about is the fact that so many girls have been groomed and raped by fully grown men and no one believed them or kept them safe. Are they going to get justice or is it going to turn into a political shitshow?

That goes for CofE covering things up for seedy priests targeting children and White grooming gangs, targeting vulnerable children in deprived areas or children in the system going missing thinking people won't notice or care. LEAVE OUR FUCKING KIDS ALONE. 👊
