Step son used my bath towel

Green0911 · 19/01/2025 01:31

Want to gauge if IABU here.

My and my husband's towels are in the bathroom. Teenage SS keeps his in his room. We each have a hand towel and a bath towel. They all get changed every 3-4 days. When it came to changing them, I realised SS didn't have his towels in his room. He said he'd put them to be laundered a few days before. When I asked him which towels he'd been using in the meantime (he'd showered at least twice during this period), initially he claimed none, then admitted he'd used mine.

I blew a fuse. Couldn't believe he thought this was acceptable. Husband has laughed it off and is accusing me of being dramatic/blowing things out of proportion.

AIBU?

I do this with my DH with toothbrushes so he can remember whose is whose. He has blue, I have pink.

What sort of emergency requires single use towel?

Going to stay with a couple who only have enough towels to cater for a couple, not a family of 8.

I guess washer breaking down would also count. It can take a whole day to get a new one!

Strictlymad · 19/01/2025 06:56

Tbh I find the separate hand towels odd? Doesn’t everyone just have one hand towel hung by the sink?

Apparently not!

SwanSong1 · 19/01/2025 06:57

First world problems. He used a towel. Get a grip

Oblomov25 · 19/01/2025 06:57

I wouldn't have blown a fuse. How old is he and insist he must know where the 2nd set is? But I get the distinct impression you don't actually like him. Is that true?

shinebrightlikeanemerald · 19/01/2025 06:58

Gross. 🤮 My teenagers would never do this. They do have their own bathrooms at home and all clean towels easily available to them in their rooms but in Uni house-share they don’t have their own bathroom so guard their towels in their rooms!

Where are the clean bathroom towels kept in your house? Can SS get them easily?

Don’t you have a face, body and hand towel? Do you wipe your face with your body towel?

PokerFriedDips · 19/01/2025 06:59

It's gross behaviour on his part but any towel kept in a shared bathroom is going to get used for handdrying at least, I wouldn't keep my own towels in the bathroom we each keep our towels in our bedrooms

SamPoodle123 · 19/01/2025 07:00

This is normal. Our kids have used our towels MANY times. Even though dh has told dd many times STOP using his towel because she then brings it to her room or leaves it somewhere else so he is often left w no towel when he gets out of the shower. She just grabs whatever towel sometimes and his happens to always be hanging there (I tend to bring my towel into the bedroom and hang there). Anyway, that is kids for you...they are usually not thinking and just grabbing whatever towel. They are not thinking about if towels are dirty etc bc towels look clean, hung and dry so why not use it. Perhaps calmly have a chat with your ds and ask him not to do that again and explain why.

m00rfarm · 19/01/2025 07:00

I would be really cross - I hate ANYONE using my towel. I don't even like people using my bathroom!

crumblingschools · 19/01/2025 07:00

@PreferMyAnimals how much laundry do you do a week?

Probably not as much as you might think. I do a load or two most days at minimum, but that includes clothes and bedding, etc.

BlondeAussie · 19/01/2025 07:02

Green0911 · 19/01/2025 01:37

He's a typical teenager with little concern about personal hygiene. And we shared a bath towel (bath! Not just a hand towel) for 3 days!

So you shared a bath towel for 3 days and were so aghast that you "blew a fuse".... but weren't aware of it until you questioned him?

Towel can't have been too grubby or creased then....

So around 14 washes a week? For how many people?

8 people.

Starsandall · 19/01/2025 07:04

He is a teenage boy this probably doesn’t even enter his head. He literally just used what’s nearest. Probably does it all the time. I think you owe him an apology your reaction sounds ott.

Zippedydodah · 19/01/2025 07:05

Green0911 · 19/01/2025 01:36

Of course not. We had numerous. 2 clean ones each at a time, that get laundered every 3 to 4 days. But numerous sets to change each time another set is laundered!

…numerous sets to change each time….!
Just how many people are there in your house? Or is it a hotel?
Numerous sets? Ffs get a grip, you’re overreacting and utterly ridiculous.

oakleaffy · 19/01/2025 07:07

You made up a thread about this, OP?

Assuming he's clean when he used it.. no big deal. Not a health risk.

Are your friends particularly grubby?

Octavia64 · 19/01/2025 07:08

You can buy towels that have your name embroidered on them.

If you are bothered about towels I'd recommend this.

I did it for swimming and holidays. No arguments any more.

BilboBlaggin · 19/01/2025 07:09

I'm impressed that with at least three of you in the house you hadn't had to do any laundry for three days to notice towels in the wash. There's three of us - me and two DD - and they get through clothes so quickly I have to put on at least one wash daily.

crumblingschools · 19/01/2025 07:11

@PreferMyAnimals do you use small towels or have a washing machine with a very large drum?
