Have I been scammed?!

Part of me thinks yes but part me of me thinks no because I’ve been to her house.

Sold a nice item via a neighbourhood selling group and as it was heavy and I had a car I offered to drop it to the ladies house. She was very lovely and the house was lovely! But when I asked for payment, she asked for my bank details. I’ve sent them through and she says she’ll transfer…but having looked online it seems this is a common scam?!

But worst case I’ve been to her house and know her address. Or are people genuine and will transfer?

Well you should've given them and sat there til the money went in. Otherwise you can't do much other than turn up on her doorstep. But it might not have been her house.

You think she somehow appropriated a house on the off chance than a stranger who was selling something for £70 would offer to drop it off and would be someone who would drive away without paying?

RoastDinnerSmellsNice · 16/01/2025 21:26

OP have you tried contacting your bank as I suggested earlier?

I have sent them a message on their chat and waiting for a reply!

This made me chuckle 😂

Halifax do let you screen shot btw. I often send someone I screenshot to show them I’ve sent money and I’m with Halifax.
I would message her again and say if it’s not going through, you’ll call at her house tomorrow to collect cash.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/01/2025 21:30

Are you sure you’ve given her the right bank details and haven’t mixed up any digits anywhere, it’s easily done.

I just checked by sending myself some money from DH Halifax to my Revolut and it was instant. I actually got the revolut notification before the Halifax spending one!

It’s really kind of you to test for me. Thank you! Hopefully it’s a big amount 😂😁

I would message her again and say if the payment isn't through in the morning then can you return for a cash payment. It would seem strange that she won't pay when you know where she lives. I doubt very much she's using a "fake address " for a £70 transaction.
I really hope you get your cash OP, these things happen.

Jesus!! I didn’t know about this!!

It's not a real risk unless people like playing practical jokes signing you up to things. They can't make any money for themselves like this.

MereDintofPandiculation · 16/01/2025 21:44

How do you solve the problem that the seller doesn't want to hand over the item until they're received payment, and the buyer doesn't want to hand over any money until they've received the item?

anotherday11 · 16/01/2025 21:44

What was it you sold OP? Just curious.

Oh no what a nightmare for you OP! I've sold a few things online before and was always worried about giving out bank details, in one case I ended up saying take the item for free as she was arguing with me over a fiver! I also made a very silly mistake once about 10 years ago selling a TV. I offered to deliver it, and he said he wanted to test out the TV first to see if it worked and offered for me to go in his house, which I did! I had my baby with me at the time and I will always remember to this day the sheer panic that ran through me when he closed the door behind me! Since that day I have always been less trusting and will no longer deliver anything and always cash on collection. I really hope it gets sorted for you OP x

Thank you. Oh hun that sounds so stressful with closing the door and the fear. Another story which has taught me not to deliver and always cash. X

I cannot comprehend why you would not insist on cash upon delivery.

😕😟😖😯😣😑😶

Because I became anxious and flustered and I am an idiot? Is that the reply you want?

Isn’t hindsight a wonderful thing.

Why beat a person when they’re down?

OP text her back and say you bank with Halifax and have taken a screenshot just fine and can she try again, see what excuse she comes up with.

Quinlan · 16/01/2025 22:07

Halifax allows you to screenshot from the app and from the website so she is lying.

You’ll have to toughen up when you go round there to get back your item.

It’s easy done, I realised once that I’d let somebody dismantle and load up the bed I was selling before paying, they could have easily driven away before paying, felt slightly panicky but turned out okay. It’s quite awkward.

Yes awkward is the best word to use!
