To think KFC is fine for an 11 year old?

New friend stuck for emergency childcare for a hospital appointment

I offered to have her, no problem. This was Saturday afternoon and her mum would be out early evening

I asked if she had any allergies because I said 'I'm happy to feed her, what does she like, any allergies?'

Her mum said no allergies, where were you thinking? I said Bella Italia

Her mum said that's lovely! That would be great

Job sorted. Got there and they had closed down! So we went nearby to KFC (both girls very happy and keen to have that instead)

Was I wrong not to run this by her mum?

When I returned her DD, I gave a small run down of how lovely she has been, all the usual. And said we had a KFC, I can't believe X place is closed

She said 'Oh? I thought you were taking her to Bella's Sad. I don't like her having fast food'

I said sorry about that, the conversation trailed off and then I said my goodbyes, said I hoped she felt well soon and drove off

Was I wrong here? She explicitly said she had no allergies and this isn't something I would be bothered about, a friend taking my daughter to place Y when they had previously said place Z (obviously no allergies involved)

I wouldn't feed KFC to my dog.

Quite right, chicken bones are risky for dogs. Don’t feed your dog Hotel Chocolat, Sunmaid raisins, or sugar-free polo mints either.

None of that is really relevant to OP though is it?

Love this thread. 3 Mumsnet tropes. Children who never eat anything that's not home made, organic,UHP free. All "fast food" is poison. Oh, and the tiniest favour is equivalent to donating a kidney.

They are all MN tropes. And the first two are well represented on this thread.

But it’s a bit harsh to say that taking a child at short notice (“emergency childcare”) is the “tiniest favour”. No doubt we’d all do it, but it’s not exactly giving a cup of sugar or lending your gardening gloves.

I’d be very, very thankful if a friend looked after a child of mine for several hours because I had a hospital appointment.

I don't give my son junk food but my brother takes him to McDonald's, and so do his friend's parents sometimes. I actually like that he gets junk food elsewhere. Makes it so much easier for me to say no - 'not today darling but it'll make it even tastier when your uncle takes you'. Honestly don't care as long as it's not all the time. Just glad to have some time to myself!

Are you for real? KFC=heroin. Only on MN. Get a grip ffs.

Yep, sorry. Forgot this was mumsnet, land of the obtuse.

Imaginehigher · 14/01/2025 17:40

No even if it's a place I don't take mine, there's two I don't like for very different reasons. I would just be glad of help and my child was fed, safe and happy.
Hopefully when less stressed ( hospital appointments can be ) they see this too

Notdoingthatno · 14/01/2025 17:44

Ungrateful cow. Food snob as well.

MrsGrumpyKnickers · 14/01/2025 18:22

She should be grateful you looked after and fed her child at short notice. Next time I’d tell her to shove it!

Crazycatlady79 · 14/01/2025 18:28

Your 'friend' is bloody lucky that you were able to have her kid, let alone her feed her.
You did a good thing.
Your 'friend' was rather rude.
Did she thank you for looking out for her kid, or was she too busy pouting about 'fast food'.

I wouldn't feed KFC to my dog.

Quite right. Terrible waste. The dog wouldn’t appreciate it.

Crakajak · 14/01/2025 19:33

I'd be fuming to be honest. Entitled parents without the cash flow need to button it or just don't breed

HRTQueen · 14/01/2025 19:40

I hope her dd went home and told her how much she enjoyed the kfc 😆

her dd is likely to be eating quite a lot of fast food in a few years especially if she had been deprived of it juding by ds and his friends

i had one parent pull a face because at ds birthday party they were eating domino’s pizza she said it would have been better if they had the local restaurant sough dough pizza as it had less salt in and twice the price I said with a smile on my face they were all enjoying the pizza and having chocolate cake for pudding

honestly some people are just so far up their own arses

croydon15 · 14/01/2025 19:55

Your friend seems to have forgotten that you did her a favour looking after her daughter and didn't even offer to pay CF

Notdoingthatno · 14/01/2025 19:58

I really need some KFC now...

Yep, sorry. Forgot this was mumsnet, land of the obtuse.

Maybe.

But it’s also the land of the weird food faddists.

mathanxiety · 14/01/2025 20:35

Your friend is a rude and ungrateful woman.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 14/01/2025 20:38

You should be getting flowers not passive aggression. CF behaviour.

PitchOver · 14/01/2025 20:46

I mean it's not like you fed her daughter a shit sandwich.

She sounds like an absolute idiot and I wouldn't help her ever again!

stichguru · 14/01/2025 20:52

If friend is that picky, friend needs to look after her own child even in an emergency.

PointsSouth · 14/01/2025 20:58

I don’t agree with those saying, ‘Don’t help her again.’ That’ll never make the point that she was being uptight and ungrateful.

I’d do it like this….

’Sorry to ask again - but can you take Kate today? I’ve got a hospital appointment and my mum’s come down with something.’

’Oh, I’d love to - but no can do, I’m afraid. I’ve promised my two we’ll go to KFC for lunch.’

….then say nothing. Just wait…

theotherplace · 14/01/2025 21:02

What a cow. You gave her free childcare and a free meal and she criticises where you went. Ditch her

Bogginsthe3rd · 14/01/2025 21:05

Some parents just don't want their children to eat fast food rubbish. She was surprised as you hadn't mentioned KFC before. It's not the crime of the century but you have to remember some parents will have different nutritional standards for their children than you.

samarrange · 14/01/2025 21:07

I only recently discovered that KFC makes all their chicken - the "classic" stuff in the boxes, anyway - from scratch in the back of the shop every day, from fresh chicken pieces, flour, and seasonings. I just assumed it was all frozen and trucked in.

It's still deep-fried food, of course, and I can only being myself to eat it about once a year as it's so calorific, but when people look down on "fast food" I often wonder how different it is from a slightly indulgent meal in a "naice" restaurant.

I remember once when Jamie Oliver was railing against delivery pizzas, someone took a pizza recipe from one of his books and compared it with one from (I think) Domino's, and Jamie's had more fat, sugar, and all the other "OMG UPF" stuff.

I've read this exact post before

Yes! Me too. Was hoping I wasn't going mad!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 14/01/2025 21:17

The only thing your friend should have said was 'thank you'.

She was unbelievably rude.
