To think KFC is fine for an 11 year old?

whereisthediff · 13/01/2025 14:47

New friend stuck for emergency childcare for a hospital appointment

I offered to have her, no problem. This was Saturday afternoon and her mum would be out early evening

I asked if she had any allergies because I said 'I'm happy to feed her, what does she like, any allergies?'

Her mum said no allergies, where were you thinking? I said Bella Italia

Her mum said that's lovely! That would be great

Job sorted. Got there and they had closed down! So we went nearby to KFC (both girls very happy and keen to have that instead)

Was I wrong not to run this by her mum?

When I returned her DD, I gave a small run down of how lovely she has been, all the usual. And said we had a KFC, I can't believe X place is closed

She said 'Oh? I thought you were taking her to Bella's Sad. I don't like her having fast food'

I said sorry about that, the conversation trailed off and then I said my goodbyes, said I hoped she felt well soon and drove off

Was I wrong here? She explicitly said she had no allergies and this isn't something I would be bothered about, a friend taking my daughter to place Y when they had previously said place Z (obviously no allergies involved)

Not wanting your kids to have KFC isn't a 'weird food fad', stop trying to sensationalise it so you can more easily belittle those who quite rightly point out it's not a good thing to put into your body.

@Nonitor

so what do you think OP should have done then?? Go to a supermarket, buy all organic food, come home and spend ages preparing and cooking a lovely homemade meal?

A KFC meal will not do any harm at all. It’s not ‘bad’ food, as if it’s poisonous.

Stop trying to scare and shame people who are eating perfectly normally.

I think the issue here is that OP friend assumed it would be Bella Italia (reasonable as this is what OP said) and probably assumed if it wasn't this it would be something equivalent. KFC is not an equivalent as a fast food joint and OP was taking a risk here which led to some rare junk food intake for the friend's children. They are probably not used to the grease/ fat content either.

I’m sure one meal of kfc is fine…

Twinkletwinklelil · 15/01/2025 09:54

Gosh, I really want a KFC now 😅

Problemzapper · 15/01/2025 11:22

Your friend sounds very entitled. Fancy making you feel rubbish over one aspect of the 'free' childcare you provided at short notice which helped her out of a hole.

I wouldn't bother offering to look after her child again after that, and if she ever asks just be blunt and say 'I didn't appreciate last time the rubbish way you made me feel after treating your child to a KFC, I thought you were most ungrateful' - though chances are she won't ask again, she will probably try to collar someone else who will take her precious child to a Gordan Ramsey restaurant or somewhere of that ilk.

PurpleThistle7 · 15/01/2025 11:40

I am so grateful to anyone who looks after my kids. I do tend to have to feed my daughter again sometimes if someone gives her something new as she's ND and struggles with food in general but I would never have any opinion on what people do when my kids are in their care - either I trust them or I don't. (Minus allergies etc)

Fluffmum · 15/01/2025 12:11

Bella Italia isn’t exactly Al la carte. She should be grateful

NoCarbsForMe · 15/01/2025 15:18

She was rude.

XWKD · 15/01/2025 15:23

Cheeky fucker. You're not her servant.

Deeperthantheocean · 15/01/2025 17:14

I would be very grateful for the last minute care and feeding my child. She is BU and ungrateful. Xx

IVFmumoftwo · 15/01/2025 17:29

All in moderation. 🤷

Oooh, why don't you add in something about laying the table and providing silver service to make it even more ridiculously extreme?

I wouldn't take anyone's kid to any fast food place without asking the parents first. And that includes when there's been a change in plans.

KFC isn't good food, you can tell yourself it isn't all you like but it's not true. And it shouldn't be part of a normal diet. People like it and want to say things like oh once in a while won't hurt because it's lazy, it's cheap and it's delicious. So eat it if you want to (I do!), and feed it to your kids if you want to - but at least have the self-awareness to admit that it's junk.

What does a 'one off' have to do with "part of a normal diet"?

I wouldn't have been asking permission when I was treating the child whose mother I was doing a big favour!

I don't eat it because it's greasy and yuck but in this situation, it would have been fine!

What is your point?

Are you saying that mothers should not give a KFC meal to children?

If not, why not?

(Pease don’t blather on about toxins or bad fats or UPFs: that’s all junk science and junk child care.)

How you behave is up to you.

So you won't eat it, but you're pretending to be all manner of confused that someone else doesn't want their kid to eat it? Gotcha.

Why do you persist in this food scaremongering?

Does it validate you in some way?

There’s really nothing wrong or unhealthy in eating KFC.

Scaremongering? By pointing out that fast food isn't good for you? Well... it isn't. I'm sorry if you don't want to hear it but it's hardly frightening. Or new information.

By all means eat it if you want to, you're free to make your own choices. But have a little common sense to admit that it's not a great choice - just saying this is OK this is OK this is OK progressively louder and more stubbornly doesn't make it true.

🙄

No food is ‘bad for you’. To absolutely shun KFC, McDonalds etc is a strong sign of an ignorant person.

Science and society are both against you.

Thank you for dissecting my post so comprehensively! If I may return the 'compliment'...

"The poster before my post said it was normal, not me".

You complained about a 'one off' KFC and you did say, "it shouldn't be part of a normal diet". I didn't see anyone said kids should eat it regularly?? I certainly don't see it as part of a normal diet!

"How you behave is up to you".

Indeed it is, and thank you for pointing out the blindingly obvious. You trust your child to me in an emergency, you accept how I deal with said child.

"So you won't eat it, but you're pretending to be all manner of confused that someone else doesn't want their kid to eat it? Gotcha".

I don't eat it because I personally don't like it. Other people do. I am not sure why this is a surprise to you? Most of us don't eat food we don't like surely? I don't have some deep-seated irrational disapproval of it lol!

The child obviously did like it, and ate it. I wouldn't be churlish enough to complain to the 'friend' who did me a favour in an emergency situation! I'm not "all manner of confused that someone else doesn't want their kid to eat it?" and I have no idea how you jumped to that conclusion!!

I would have been grateful that someone was willing to mind my child when I needed it, and wouldn't have split hairs over what they ate, so long as they didn't eat something they were allergic to. Moreover, the OP even paid for it!!

Bloody hell, if it wasn't for your post, I'd never have known that "fast food isn't good for you"!!

What a 'revelation' 🙄

No harm in the occasional fast food. If you're this anal with your children, god help you when they are able to get food for themselves without your input!

At 11? I wouldn't. They will soon be old enough to start making their own food choices, asking mummy like they are 2 is embarrassing. Especially over a rare KFC.
