To think KFC is fine for an 11 year old?

New friend stuck for emergency childcare for a hospital appointment

I offered to have her, no problem. This was Saturday afternoon and her mum would be out early evening

I asked if she had any allergies because I said 'I'm happy to feed her, what does she like, any allergies?'

Her mum said no allergies, where were you thinking? I said Bella Italia

Her mum said that's lovely! That would be great

Job sorted. Got there and they had closed down! So we went nearby to KFC (both girls very happy and keen to have that instead)

Was I wrong not to run this by her mum?

When I returned her DD, I gave a small run down of how lovely she has been, all the usual. And said we had a KFC, I can't believe X place is closed

She said 'Oh? I thought you were taking her to Bella's Sad. I don't like her having fast food'

I said sorry about that, the conversation trailed off and then I said my goodbyes, said I hoped she felt well soon and drove off

Was I wrong here? She explicitly said she had no allergies and this isn't something I would be bothered about, a friend taking my daughter to place Y when they had previously said place Z (obviously no allergies involved)

This thread is funny.

I wonder how many of these people who are outraged about "fast food" even know exactly why they're outraged beyond just general "it must be bad"? I mean, specifically, the reasons I eat KFC seldom and when I do, I make sure to really appreciate it are

  • It's basically just a vat of oil and fried food that is bad for my arteries, and a carcinogenic to boot. Plus, you know, I'm overweight - I don't need that many calories, especially calories from fat and carbs.
  • Lots of UPFs in the flavourings and ingredients (although admittedly, I don't know that for a fact - I'm just assuming).
  • Chicken welfare

But because I know WHY I don't like to eat it often, I also know that doing so now and again as part of a usually healthy and balanced diet is not going to do me any harm.

But then, I once got told on here that I was risking my child's health because I admitted that I occassionally gave him salami in his lunchbox....

I've been called neglectful on here in the past because I've always fed DC little bits of everything from weaning, even....KFC. 😂

Well most have 5* ratings. It's the joy of franchises.

I bet the one at the bottom of town that has closed down now didn't. used to stink of rancid cooking oil when you walked past. but that's not all of them, that's specifically that one. I can't believe how many people would go in when it smelt so bad.
I've not had KFC for many many years now, but I used to like it as a child. the seasoning was tasty.

Hwi · 13/01/2025 17:47

You should not have said Bella Italia - you should have said 'I am doing you a favour, I have no idea where I shall be taking them, but I shall take your information about allergies seriously, other than that, be grateful I am doing you a favour'.

NoTouch · 13/01/2025 17:57

She was exceptionally rude when someone was doing her a massive favour and I would have made sure she knew that.

Probably with a "really!?!? its a bloody KFC, not Vodka and Redbull - remind me to never do YOU a favour in the future" 🤔

Sherararara · 13/01/2025 17:58

Bella Italia and Pizza Express are only a marginal step up from KFC and McDonalds. It’s mostly marketing pitching towards a more middle class crowd. Seems like it works.

Wonderfulstuff · 13/01/2025 18:00

Skiptogetfit · 13/01/2025 15:25

I would class any pizza as fast food. All that cheese. Ugh! Just because you’re eating it in a naice middle class environment doesn’t mean it’s better for you.

There's a lot of things I don't agree with on MN but dissing cheese is definitely a step too far.

CurlewKate · 13/01/2025 18:04

Love this thread. 3 Mumsnet tropes. Children who never eat anything that's not home made, organic,UHP free. All "fast food" is poison. Oh, and the tiniest favour is equivalent to donating a kidney.

ChampagneLassie · 13/01/2025 18:06

My LO is 2.5, whilst not my ideal if someone is providing emergency free childcare you suck it up. I’d just be glad you looked after her and fed her. Isn’t Bella Italia fast food? It’s hardly home cooking? I’d swerve this “friend”

ChampagneLassie · 13/01/2025 18:12

Nonitor · 13/01/2025 16:06

Yeah but pizza express and KFC aren't really equivalent. KFC is garbage, same as McDonalds or Burger King. I don't want my kids eating it either. I wouldn't have said anything in this case though as you were doing her a favour and you didn't know but it's a bit silly to not see why pizza express is OK but KFC isn't.

Is it? Where is the objective fast food hierarchy. Personally from what I know of their supply chain and controls I think McDonald’s is really good, I’d pick that or BK ahead of others. Certainly ahead of Bella Italia. I don’t know much about kFC and I didn’t like it when I tried it so I’d not be inclined to go myself but if someone was feeding my child in an emergency I’d just be glad they fed them. Food is food. I think I’d only be upset if they gave them endless sugar and no proper food but I couldn’t get upset about some fast food.

HansHolbein · 13/01/2025 14:49

The next time she needs emergency childcare she can shove it up her arse.

This! How rude and entitled.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 13/01/2025 15:06

I wouldn't feed KFC to my dog.

Neither would I due to the bones. My DC can have it though.

Boomer55 · 13/01/2025 18:15

Like all that type of junk food, it should be eaten as a treat , and best in moderation,🙂

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 13/01/2025 18:17

Thinking about my childhood in the 70’s and early 80’s. No real fast food apart from a Wimpy in the town centre.
If someone’s mum took you in for tea it involved a chip pan. With lard. Egg and chips. Corned beef and chips. Unless it was a Saturday and you’d get some sort of casserole.
If we were lucky we got ‘afters’ - usually tinned fruit and evaporated milk.
And orange squash.
I don’t know how we did it but me and every kid in my family and street were like whippets.
However, there was hardly much in terms of money for snacks, sweets, biscuits and soft drinks.
I can remember my mum used to buy a whole packet of chocolate digestives on a Thursday to last the week and they would get eaten during Top of the Pops.
I am not looking back with rose tinted specs. We did actually eat veg, I can remember having fruit, but there were no huge portions and we were outdoors running around constantly.
I can just imagine my mum saying to a neighbour…
Marg, you never gave Peggy an extra buttered bap with her chips, did you?!!!

SpaceOP · 13/01/2025 18:18

Frequency · 13/01/2025 17:36

I worked in KFC as a teen. It is genuinely just 100% chicken (it is actually delivered as whole, raw chicken quarters) white flour, and herbs and spices.

I can't comment on their fries, bread buns, chicken pop corn, etc., but the chicken itself is something you could easily make at home.

Yes, I always assume any UPF is in ny batter, spice mixes, condiments, sauces, bread etc. But therefore it's not extreme and occassional enjoyment really is completely fine.

Actually the reason I prefer KFC or a burger as my fast food of choice is that at least there is some meaningful nutrition in the form of the meat/chicken protein. Much as i LOVE a pizza and will happily enjoy one, even, gasp, from a less-than-brilliant-takeway - the volume of the tomato or odd vegetable doesn't add much nutrition.

Nextyearhopes · 13/01/2025 18:25

Given that you helped her out in a fix she has NO RIGHT to comment on where you took her to eat.
(Although I would rather starve than go to KFC hahaha)
You did fine OP

Nanny0gg · 13/01/2025 18:28

Simonjt · 13/01/2025 17:30

Premade frozen dough, pre made sauce in jars, premade dough balls, premade salad dressings, pre-portion frozen vegetables, frozen carbonara sauce in blocks. I think we may have a rather different view of made from scratch.

Their salad dressings are delicious

Dramatic · 13/01/2025 18:29

Yanbu at all, she was very rude.

Fast food also has a hierarchy of snob level

Who knew?

LookItsMeAgain · 13/01/2025 18:34

My answer to her comment "I thought you were going to Bella's" would have been:
"We did but they've closed down. I made sure that your kid was included where we did finally end up which was KFC's so they've been fed and aren't hungry. Hope your appointment went well for you. Talk again soon....bye"

Cakeandcardio · 13/01/2025 18:45

When someone watched my wee boy in an unplanned situation they fed him a McDonalds. It was his first one and not something we would have given him as he is 4. But... they were doing us a favour, probably thought they were giving him a nice treat when he was away from his mum and dad and it made life easy for them. So we kept shut! It really won't derail any healthy eating we do at home.

Your friend is over-reacting. But I am sure we have all acted silly at times.

Nonitor · 13/01/2025 17:19

she said no allergies. she didn't say, no allergies but I don't want them eating fast food.

She also didn't say please don't shoot them up with heroin or ride in the front seat with no seatbelt - just because she specifically didn't list it doesn't mean all bets are off. As far as she was aware they were going to a different restaurant, why on earth would she list all the other ones she doesn't want then to go to??

Are you for real? KFC=heroin. Only on MN. Get a grip ffs.

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 13/01/2025 19:50

It would be the last favour I'd be doing her!

Growlybear83 · 13/01/2025 19:59

I don't think KFC will hurt occasionally and your friend is being incredibly ungrateful and unreasonable. You were kind enough to look after her child at the drop of a hat and to provide food. It wasn't your fault that Bella Italia was closed - did she seriously expect you to drive to a supermarket and then start cooking? I don't think I'd be willing to help out again in a hurry.
