To think KFC is fine for an 11 year old?

New friend stuck for emergency childcare for a hospital appointment

I offered to have her, no problem. This was Saturday afternoon and her mum would be out early evening

I asked if she had any allergies because I said 'I'm happy to feed her, what does she like, any allergies?'

Her mum said no allergies, where were you thinking? I said Bella Italia

Her mum said that's lovely! That would be great

Job sorted. Got there and they had closed down! So we went nearby to KFC (both girls very happy and keen to have that instead)

Was I wrong not to run this by her mum?

When I returned her DD, I gave a small run down of how lovely she has been, all the usual. And said we had a KFC, I can't believe X place is closed

She said 'Oh? I thought you were taking her to Bella's Sad. I don't like her having fast food'

I said sorry about that, the conversation trailed off and then I said my goodbyes, said I hoped she felt well soon and drove off

Was I wrong here? She explicitly said she had no allergies and this isn't something I would be bothered about, a friend taking my daughter to place Y when they had previously said place Z (obviously no allergies involved)

Some parents just don't want their children to eat fast food rubbish. She was surprised as you hadn't mentioned KFC before. It's not the crime of the century but you have to remember some parents will have different nutritional standards for their children than you.

🙄

Take the stick out of your arse.

Teaching my child to be grateful, polite and to enjoy all types of food in moderation is the standard I aim for.

Surely it is OP's friend that has to remember that? and maybe not ask in the future if it's that important to her.

I think the issue here is that OP friend assumed it would be Bella Italia (reasonable as this is what OP said) and probably assumed if it wasn't this it would be something equivalent. KFC is not an equivalent as a fast food joint and OP was taking a risk here which led to some rare junk food intake for the friend's children. They are probably not used to the grease/ fat content either.

Bella Italia is premade fast food, if the parent was anti junk food, they would have been anti Bella Italia as well.

I think most reasonable people would disagree with your equivalence.

I think the issue here is the friend is an ingrate.

Nobody sensible or decent could care less about a KFC meal when someone’s looked after their child for them so they could attend a hospital appointment.

I think it sounds like an immediate surprised reaction from OP friend who was a bit shocked that children had been given junk food rather than being ungrateful. If she had pre-known by text for example I bet you she wouldn't have mentioned it and wouldn't have let on at all.

Why does the KFC matter? It’s just food.

Yes of course. But it's junk food and some parents don't give any to their children (rightly or wrongly). I personally wasn't allowed a McDonalds till I was a teenager.

InvisibilityCloakActivated · 14/01/2025 22:31

KFC is fine for an 11 year old. If you were saying she had to eat it every meal for the rest of time then it would be problematic, but one meal in an unusual, emergency situation if very kind of you.

Then they should warn people.

The child in question is 11, not a baby. Most people are going to assume that a child in high school can have a KFC.

’Junk’ food is food. A KFC dinner is no worse than poulet frites in a ‘bijou’ French restaurant, or a chicken dinner cooked at home.

It’s all snobbery or faddism, or both.

Bogginsthe3rd · 14/01/2025 22:18

I would have thought most people would think food thats all pre made, high in upf and heated up at an end point is junk/fast food. Or are there some people out there who are under the impression that Bella Italia sell freshly prepared food?

abracadabra1980 · 14/01/2025 22:37

Is this really how people carry on these days? You do a person a favour, and she acts like a total dickhead? Surely if the child had an allergy to. particular food, that would have been stated by her mother and would be all that mattered, but 'I don't like her having fast food' is just taking the piss.

It's personal choice is what it is. It's likely fried chicken and fried chips in KFC are much worse in terms of saturated fat and processing than most freshly cooked food and particularly most pasta dishes. Sad you can't see that.

Nightmarewithdelirium · 14/01/2025 22:44

Free emergency childcare!! You could feed my kids hotdog sausages inside doughnuts and I'd be happy. What an entitled person she is!!

Nightmarewithdelirium · 14/01/2025 22:50

Amd Bella Italia is also junk food. Absolutely ridiculous to think it's not. Unless you were just ordering a salad with no dressing.
But they cover everything in oil. It's actually going to be up there with KFC in terms of calories and saturated fats.
Probably a KFC is slightly unhealthier due to salt and batter... but there won't be much in it. Not enough difference to be making comments like 'we don't let our child eat fast food' to someone offering free childcare who you told Bella Pasta was fine.
It's like getting cross if you said it was OK to take your kid to pizzahut but but they got taken to macdonalds instead. For free.. in an emergency!!

Ukrainebaby23 · 14/01/2025 22:51

Can't abide KFC really but child safe, entertained, fed and all for free, mother needs to practice her grateful face.

Mygrandkidsaregreat · 14/01/2025 23:13

Your friend was probably not thinking much, harassed after her appointment and I doubt she meant much by it.Once things have settled maybe ask her why she doesn’t like kfc?

@Bogginsthe3rd

even if that were the case, so what?? It’s one meal! The OP was doing this kids mum a massive favour.

ShirkingFromHome95 · 14/01/2025 23:18

I think it's fine in moderation in the absence of dietary issues.

pollymere · 14/01/2025 23:26

Light laugh... "Oh we don't usually either! But with Bella Italia having SHUTDOWN...It was really KFC or STARVE. So WE just HAD to!"

No apology necessary. I'm sure her child will not die. (Although if it were my local KFC, I don't put odds in her favour. It has a Zero hygiene rating).

Flavourful · 15/01/2025 06:36

Bloody hell, she’s lucky you looked after her daughter and not only fed her but paid for it too. Why are people so entitled today? She could have just said Thankyou so much! Next time I’d say no when she needs a sitter!

Nonitor · 15/01/2025 08:22

Rummly · 14/01/2025 20:12

Maybe.

But it’s also the land of the weird food faddists.

Not wanting your kids to have KFC isn't a 'weird food fad', stop trying to sensationalise it so you can more easily belittle those who quite rightly point out it's not a good thing to put into your body.

JSMill · 15/01/2025 08:50

You were kind to have her daughter and she was rude to react like that.
