To think KFC is fine for an 11 year old?

whereisthediff · 13/01/2025 14:47

New friend stuck for emergency childcare for a hospital appointment

I offered to have her, no problem. This was Saturday afternoon and her mum would be out early evening

I asked if she had any allergies because I said 'I'm happy to feed her, what does she like, any allergies?'

Her mum said no allergies, where were you thinking? I said Bella Italia

Her mum said that's lovely! That would be great

Job sorted. Got there and they had closed down! So we went nearby to KFC (both girls very happy and keen to have that instead)

Was I wrong not to run this by her mum?

When I returned her DD, I gave a small run down of how lovely she has been, all the usual. And said we had a KFC, I can't believe X place is closed

She said 'Oh? I thought you were taking her to Bella's Sad. I don't like her having fast food'

I said sorry about that, the conversation trailed off and then I said my goodbyes, said I hoped she felt well soon and drove off

Was I wrong here? She explicitly said she had no allergies and this isn't something I would be bothered about, a friend taking my daughter to place Y when they had previously said place Z (obviously no allergies involved)

I love the way some of you are supporting the KFC choice but still managing to get the superiority dig in at Bella Italia!

Well done!

Absolutely fine. You were doing her a favour. Mum was UR to even mention it and should have just thanked you!

I also now fancy KFC

Me too

Yanbu op, and she is a CF

God. You do people a favour and they always have to act like an arse.

You did nothing wrong.

This. As a one off what did it matter?

Nonitor · 13/01/2025 17:19

CrowleyKitten · 13/01/2025 17:12

it's fine occasionally. I definitely sometimes had it much younger than that.
okay, fast food isn't the best, but as long as it's not overly frequent, it's perfectly normal.
you made sure her child was looked after and fed. and it sounds like she enjoyed it as a treat.

she said no allergies. she didn't say, no allergies but I don't want them eating fast food.

She also didn't say please don't shoot them up with heroin or ride in the front seat with no seatbelt - just because she specifically didn't list it doesn't mean all bets are off. As far as she was aware they were going to a different restaurant, why on earth would she list all the other ones she doesn't want then to go to??

New friend should be exceptionally grateful to you for helping her out of a tight spot and has no right whatsoever to criticise what you fed her child. So next time, to avoid the horrors of fast food, she takes her child to the hospital with her, doesn't she?

Gggglinda · 13/01/2025 17:21

Oh for goodness sake. Any excuse to moan! I can't believe how rude and entitled people have become. No good deed goes unpunished, as they say. I would have been extremely greatful if someone looked after my dc and bought them kfc.

Because illegal drugs and car safety are comparable with making sure her daughter was fed when OP was good enough to look after her in an emergency.

All she needed to say was thank you.

Meh7 · 13/01/2025 17:23

She is a very CF 😳

Honestly, you are making a big deal of a throwaway remark from a mum who needed an urgent hospital appointment. Chill out

@MerryMaker

she shouldn’t have made the comment, end of! A simple ‘thank you’ to OP would have sufficed

I wouldn't feed KFC to my dog.

I also wouldn’t feed biryani to my dog, whether or not you feed something to a dog has no relation to a human eating it.

Oh come on, heroin =/= KFC

PeachRose1986 · 13/01/2025 17:27

Bloody cheek, I would not help her out again!

MarioLink · 13/01/2025 17:27

If she has a rule against her child eating fast food then it was on her to tell you if it mattered that much. Or her child to tell you (she was probably thrilled!). You did nothing wrong, you helped her out and plans change. In a couple of years this child will be out with her friends getting fast food.

I wouldn't feed KFC to my dog.

Nor would I.

It's full of bones and onion powder.

Also, I don't share well.

Simonjt · 13/01/2025 17:30

devilspawn · 13/01/2025 16:13

They make the food from scratch in Pizza Express, and they've heard of vegetables (although the food isn't made from scratch in Bella Italia, so there's that).

I'm surprised you didn't check the restaurant in advance though, with the potential that you might have needed to book.

Edited

Premade frozen dough, pre made sauce in jars, premade dough balls, premade salad dressings, pre-portion frozen vegetables, frozen carbonara sauce in blocks. I think we may have a rather different view of made from scratch.

InfoSecInTheCity · 13/01/2025 17:32

Absolutely fine. If someone was feeding my child, as long as they weren't giving a known allergen I would just be very thankful for whatever they got and would offer to reimburse you for the cost, I'd actually probably offer to cover the cost for all of you as a thanks for going out of your way to help me.

HansHolbein · 13/01/2025 14:49

The next time she needs emergency childcare she can shove it up her arse.

My thought too. I find it hard to believe people can be this cheeky after you've done them a favour. Actually no, I can believe it.

SpaceOP · 13/01/2025 17:33

This thread is funny.

I wonder how many of these people who are outraged about "fast food" even know exactly why they're outraged beyond just general "it must be bad"? I mean, specifically, the reasons I eat KFC seldom and when I do, I make sure to really appreciate it are

  • It's basically just a vat of oil and fried food that is bad for my arteries, and a carcinogenic to boot. Plus, you know, I'm overweight - I don't need that many calories, especially calories from fat and carbs.
  • Lots of UPFs in the flavourings and ingredients (although admittedly, I don't know that for a fact - I'm just assuming).
  • Chicken welfare

But because I know WHY I don't like to eat it often, I also know that doing so now and again as part of a usually healthy and balanced diet is not going to do me any harm.

But then, I once got told on here that I was risking my child's health because I admitted that I occassionally gave him salami in his lunchbox....

Sadly it’s not a surprise when we literally have posterw complaining night nurse has too many calories when on a diet of 600 calories a day. It could be worse, you could have fed them a mashed banana!

I worked in KFC as a teen. It is genuinely just 100% chicken (it is actually delivered as whole, raw chicken quarters) white flour, and herbs and spices.

I can't comment on their fries, bread buns, chicken pop corn, etc., but the chicken itself is something you could easily make at home.

@Skiptogetfit "
"I would class any pizza as fast food. All that cheese. Ugh! "

How do you define "fast food"?

Things we like to look down on.

For fast food, not much faster than a salad.

TempestTost · 13/01/2025 17:40

People now seem to think that it is ok as a guest to dictate exactly what other people can serve, beyond the most fundamental restrictions like allergies etc.

I knew by the time I was six that if people offered me food in their home or on an outing, I ate what the gave me, and pretended to like it. Even tomato soup from a can which I despised.

It's no wonder really people don't want to take on hospitality any more, everyone is so entitled.

RhubarbAndFlustered · 13/01/2025 17:41

Bella Italia isn't exactly fine dining!

Friend was a CF. She shouldn't have said anything. Plus, it's a bloody KFC! Who cares? Even if the child is on a strict diet, one meal isn't going to do much harm. She's 11, not a baby having first tastes and not being allowed sugary treats.

MoonHavana · 13/01/2025 17:43

My child was brought up on chips and turkey dinosaurs and was the healthiest kid in the class. Bottle fed too. Now a very healthy and successful adult.
