To think KFC is fine for an 11 year old?

New friend stuck for emergency childcare for a hospital appointment

I offered to have her, no problem. This was Saturday afternoon and her mum would be out early evening

I asked if she had any allergies because I said 'I'm happy to feed her, what does she like, any allergies?'

Her mum said no allergies, where were you thinking? I said Bella Italia

Her mum said that's lovely! That would be great

Job sorted. Got there and they had closed down! So we went nearby to KFC (both girls very happy and keen to have that instead)

Was I wrong not to run this by her mum?

When I returned her DD, I gave a small run down of how lovely she has been, all the usual. And said we had a KFC, I can't believe X place is closed

She said 'Oh? I thought you were taking her to Bella's Sad. I don't like her having fast food'

I said sorry about that, the conversation trailed off and then I said my goodbyes, said I hoped she felt well soon and drove off

Was I wrong here? She explicitly said she had no allergies and this isn't something I would be bothered about, a friend taking my daughter to place Y when they had previously said place Z (obviously no allergies involved)

That's definetly her problem not yours. Even just basic manners she shouldn't have said anything other than "thank you". So she's rude too.

Plus, Bella Italia is a chain, so bet you £ most of their products come pre prepared in some way into the restaurants.

emanresu24 · 13/01/2025 15:03

It's fine. KFC is one of those foods that once I've seen an advert/read/heard about it I can't stop thinking about wanting one. So, thanks for that😂

Starlight1984 · 13/01/2025 15:04

Doesn't like fast food but approves of Bella Italia???😂

To be honest I can't believe her mum even said anything other than "Thank you so much for having her". Cheeky cow!!!

Oh and when DSD (12) has her friends over, we pretty much always have a takeaway!

fanaticalfairy · 13/01/2025 15:04

Next time take her to Bella Italia and order the kids "chicken crunchies" and a side of fries 🤣🤣

PennyApril54 · 13/01/2025 15:05

She should just be grateful you provided support! Did she give you money in advance for the kids' food? Even if she did I still think this comment is out of order.

Twinkletwinklelil · 13/01/2025 14:51

She should’ve said that before she dropped her off or whatever.. unfair of her to expect you to know.
you did nothing wrong, you fed her child.

an example would be - my parents have my son and I’ve told them he can’t have sweets under any circumstances. therefore, there’s no excuse. If they gave him sweets and I hadn’t explicitly said anything, I can’t blame them. If she felt SO strongly she should have told you first, as I said.

I don't think the mother has any right at all to dictate where they ate. As long as there were no allergies or dietary issues and OP checked that. OP was doing the mother a favour by looking after the child at the last minute and in those circumstances the child should fit in with whatever the OP was doing. And all the mother should have said is thank you!

I wouldn't feed KFC to my dog.

Arlanymor · 13/01/2025 15:07

I think she should/could have kept that option to herself. You did her a favour AND you fed her child. There's not a massive difference between KFC and BI - they're both high street chains.

I want Marco Polo pasta now... (I know there is a Schwartz packet but it's not the same and I live nowhere near a branch of BI).

I wouldn't feed KFC to my dog.

No one is asking if you would.

comedycentral · 13/01/2025 15:14

A bit of a rude and ungrateful reaction from her; you did everything right, in my opinion.

I don't even think KFC is that cheap, to be honest, it's fairly generous of you to take them out to eat. I'd thank you and offer to reimburse you.

One can only hope she forgot her manners and walked away wondering why on earth she was so rude!

I wouldn't waste a KFC on your dog.

I wouldn't feed KFC to my dog.

I mean who would waste the money feeding kfc to a dog? Don’t think that was the discussion here. An 11 year old with no diet issues though, lovely treat once in a blue moon. My kids would have been thrilled, you offering anymore babysitting op?

My brother used to do the IT for KFC, quite a bit of the cooking is controlled over the internet and he would fix their faults.

He said the hygiene is shocking and there would be bin liners full of rotten chicken, open and stinking and every surface is covered in a film of oil/fat, so much so, the staff have to wear special sand paper soled shoes.

I wouldn't give a KFC to my dog let alone a child.

outerspacepotato · 13/01/2025 15:23

You did a good deed with no notice plus you fed her.

I would be giving you something nice for your thoughtfulness, not shade.

I wouldn't feed KFC to my dog.

I should hope not, it’s got bones in it.

Dotto · 13/01/2025 15:24

Yeah our local KFCs have been in tonnes of trouble for appalling hygiene failures in the last few years. It's about the only fast food I refuse.

But OP wasn't BU if this one isn't shit, and friend should be grateful.

Bramshott · 13/01/2025 15:25

If the other mum is otherwise nice, maybe she just said what was in her mind without filtering it, and is kicking herself now?! It's the kind of thing I'd think, but probably not say (and yes I do think deep fried fast food is less healthy than pasta fast food).

Skiptogetfit · 13/01/2025 15:25

Twinkletwinklelil · 13/01/2025 14:53

I wouldn’t class pizza express as fast food.

and your subject line is asking if we think kfc is fine for a 10yo.. each parent parents differently - but like I said, she should’ve explicitly said no fast food lol
so YANBU

I would class any pizza as fast food. All that cheese. Ugh! Just because you’re eating it in a naice middle class environment doesn’t mean it’s better for you.

You friend needs to chill.

This. She should be grateful you took her child out for food.

coxesorangepippin · 13/01/2025 15:25

You were not wrong

She's a cheeky so and so for even mentioning Bella Italia

Talk about ungrateful!!!

I wouldn't feed KFC to my dog.

Well no, because cooked chicken bones can splinter and can kill dogs. Children will be fine though.

GreenLeaf25 · 13/01/2025 15:28

Honestly I can't believe how ungrateful people can be. I would have said "thank you" multiple times and asked how much I owe you.
