To think KFC is fine for an 11 year old?

whereisthediff · 13/01/2025 14:47

New friend stuck for emergency childcare for a hospital appointment

I offered to have her, no problem. This was Saturday afternoon and her mum would be out early evening

I asked if she had any allergies because I said 'I'm happy to feed her, what does she like, any allergies?'

Her mum said no allergies, where were you thinking? I said Bella Italia

Her mum said that's lovely! That would be great

Job sorted. Got there and they had closed down! So we went nearby to KFC (both girls very happy and keen to have that instead)

Was I wrong not to run this by her mum?

When I returned her DD, I gave a small run down of how lovely she has been, all the usual. And said we had a KFC, I can't believe X place is closed

She said 'Oh? I thought you were taking her to Bella's Sad. I don't like her having fast food'

I said sorry about that, the conversation trailed off and then I said my goodbyes, said I hoped she felt well soon and drove off

Was I wrong here? She explicitly said she had no allergies and this isn't something I would be bothered about, a friend taking my daughter to place Y when they had previously said place Z (obviously no allergies involved)

Well that's the last time I would be doing her any favours. Cheeky cow.

ginasevern · 13/01/2025 16:01

What an ungrateful and ungracious woman. Next time she can find other childcare arrangements. Does she honestly, in her wildest dreams, think that Bella Italia's food is known for its good provenance! Does she think it's overseen by Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall? It's cheap crap, mass produced in a factory on an industrial estate and delivered to site. It's no better (and possibly even worse) than an Asda Smart Price ready meal. Silly cow.

God. You do people a favour and they always have to act like an arse.

You did nothing wrong.

This

LittleBigHead · 13/01/2025 16:03

Wouldn't be my first choice if Bella Italia were closed, although it's not as if Bella Italia is fine dining! Wasn't there anywhere else?

But you were doing your friend a favour - your friend was a bit thoughtless to comment.

KeyWorker · 13/01/2025 16:04

Have you posted this before? This thread is familiar.

No good deed goes unpunished!

mitogoshigg · 13/01/2025 16:05

Who else is now fancying kfc???

Can't remember the last time I had it but I'm wondering if dh could pick some up on his way home from the motorway services.

Just to add, a few months ago she went to the same birthday party as DD - At Pizza Express! And they all shared pizzas

Yeah but pizza express and KFC aren't really equivalent. KFC is garbage, same as McDonalds or Burger King. I don't want my kids eating it either. I wouldn't have said anything in this case though as you were doing her a favour and you didn't know but it's a bit silly to not see why pizza express is OK but KFC isn't.

MajorCarolDanvers · 13/01/2025 16:06

What snooty bitch.

Even if she doesn't like fast food the only appropriate reply to you was "thank you so much and do I owe you any money".

Yes KFC is fine as long as not every night of the week.

Me. Could just eat a couple of their mini fillets. 😋

Clearinguptheclutter · 13/01/2025 16:08

she was rude and ungrateful. I mean I wouldnt want my 11year old eating KFC very often but once in a while when there are childcare challenges and a friend steps in to help? I'd be hugely grateful

knitnerd90 · 13/01/2025 16:09

I don't normally take my kids to KFC but if someone is doing me a favour, and on top they had asked about food and I'd just said no allergies, well then the only polite thing to do is to thank them very much for taking care of my child and being so kind as to feed them too. Sub-optimal is not the same thing as poisonous.

Figgygal · 13/01/2025 16:10

Shes pretty ungrateful op
Her child won't suffer from one KFC so she just doesn't need to take her herself
When her dd becomes more independent she's gonna struggle if she makes occasional fast food a battleground.

FrenchandSaunders · 13/01/2025 16:12

Christ, new friend .... I'd drop her, rude cow.

They make the food from scratch in Pizza Express, and they've heard of vegetables (although the food isn't made from scratch in Bella Italia, so there's that).

I'm surprised you didn't check the restaurant in advance though, with the potential that you might have needed to book.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 13/01/2025 16:16

At least kfc is proper chicken meat rather than god knows what

BeLilacSloth · 13/01/2025 16:18

This mum is ridiculous! I would think Bella Italia pizza was much higher calorie than kfc!

blackbird77 · 13/01/2025 16:20

emanresu24 · 13/01/2025 15:03

It's fine. KFC is one of those foods that once I've seen an advert/read/heard about it I can't stop thinking about wanting one. So, thanks for that😂

I know. I now also have the same dilemma. On the bus on the way home and debating getting off a stop early just to get some KFC and gravy now that I’m reading this thread.

blackbird77 · 13/01/2025 16:22

And also to add Bella Italia and KFC probably have the same nutritional content/calories. Just pasta and garlic bread and mozerella sticks and stuff like that. I wouldn’t consider either of them particularly healthy so it would be splitting hairs! You probably get more protein at KFC (both are delicious though)

Porcuporpoise · 13/01/2025 16:24

She was rude. I personally think KFC is grim as fuck and wouldn't buy it but if you're doing me a favour and offering to feed my child then I'm hardly going to complain (and my kids would have been delighted).

TopshopCropTop · 13/01/2025 16:27

Bella Italia, when it existed, was literally preprepped stuff and frozen stuff from Brakes and Bookers warmed up. Absolutely vile and not much better than KFC. Tell your friend to ram her childcare next time.

GrazeConcern · 13/01/2025 16:27

I’d much rather my kids had KFC which is basically fried chicken and potatoes than highly processed pasta sauces in Bella Italia! She was extremely rude and ungrateful.

Beautifulbouquet · 13/01/2025 16:28

MrsSunshine2b · 13/01/2025 15:52

Of course it's food. It's mostly MSG, which is naturally occurring in tomatoes, chicken, and salt. We need salt and fat to survive. Most people eat too much salt and fat, that doesn't mean that salt and fat are poisonous.

Its not food in that it doesn't provide the body with the macro and micro nutrients it needs.

I didn't say it was poison.

I said itvdiesntbdo what food dies which is to support a healthy body and brain.

TheGander · 13/01/2025 16:28

I’m a dietitian and I was all ready to come on and say KFC isn’t ok ( from a health point of view). But it was a one off, you took her kid for a meal there with your kid, it’s not like you’re the childminder and taking them there every day. She sounds uptight and a bit rude. I don’t like KFC but on this kind of occasion I would have buttoned it.

Erm, no they don't. Neither the dough or sauces or pasta meals are made from scratch in a Pizza Express restaurant.
