To think KFC is fine for an 11 year old?

whereisthediff · 13/01/2025 14:47

New friend stuck for emergency childcare for a hospital appointment

I offered to have her, no problem. This was Saturday afternoon and her mum would be out early evening

I asked if she had any allergies because I said 'I'm happy to feed her, what does she like, any allergies?'

Her mum said no allergies, where were you thinking? I said Bella Italia

Her mum said that's lovely! That would be great

Job sorted. Got there and they had closed down! So we went nearby to KFC (both girls very happy and keen to have that instead)

Was I wrong not to run this by her mum?

When I returned her DD, I gave a small run down of how lovely she has been, all the usual. And said we had a KFC, I can't believe X place is closed

She said 'Oh? I thought you were taking her to Bella's Sad. I don't like her having fast food'

I said sorry about that, the conversation trailed off and then I said my goodbyes, said I hoped she felt well soon and drove off

Was I wrong here? She explicitly said she had no allergies and this isn't something I would be bothered about, a friend taking my daughter to place Y when they had previously said place Z (obviously no allergies involved)

Have you posted this before? This thread is familiar.

Every thread on MN has been done before. Many of them dozens of times.

At least this one doesn’t involve the Middle East, VAT on private schools, dogs scared of fireworks or the Christmas Gavin and Stacey.

Fetburzswefg · 13/01/2025 16:30

It’s fine - she’s being an ungrateful arsehole

Wait til she hears about shoes on/off indoors!

TaffetaRustle · 13/01/2025 16:34

Unbelievable. Don't do the favour again

Littlemisscapable · 13/01/2025 16:37

Rude

Its not food in that it doesn't provide the body with the macro and micro nutrients it needs.

I didn't say it was poison.

I said itvdiesntbdo what food dies which is to support a healthy body and brain.

It still contains carbohydrates, protein and fat in quantities significant enough to provide a kid with enough energy to get through to breakfast. It’s not nutritionally balanced and wouldn’t be an acceptable diet if you ate just that, but it absolutely provides necessary macronutrients. It’s food.

If you’d gone home and deep fried some chicken and chips, and called it poulet frit et frites à la Colonelle she’d no doubt praise you for the healthy good food.

Good point. Did you have corn on the cob, OP?

Tootiredmummyof3 · 13/01/2025 16:46

I don't like my kids to have fast food but I wouldn't complain if another parent took my child there. I'd just be grateful they had done me a massive favour.

Oh since when does chicken, sweetcorn and beans not provide micro and macro nutrients?

Thisismetooaswell · 13/01/2025 16:48

I never gave it to mine, nor McDonalds or similar. That's my choice. But if someone else was looking after my child I would just be grateful and wouldn't comment at all- especially in an emergency, short notice situation. Very ungrateful of her and if I were you I wouldn't be available if it happens again

They make the food from scratch in Pizza Express, and they've heard of vegetables (although the food isn't made from scratch in Bella Italia, so there's that).

I'm surprised you didn't check the restaurant in advance though, with the potential that you might have needed to book.

Edited

🤣 "they've heard of vegetables" - so have KFC, they serve sweetcorn and salad.

And PE do not make everything from scratch.

nodramaplz · 13/01/2025 16:52

Did she offer u money?
Tell her to FOABQ next time or mind her own child.
Dick!!

LlynTegid · 13/01/2025 16:54

Maybe once or twice a year as a treat but not otherwise. Same with McDonalds, Burger King etc.

In the situation you faced, you were unaware of the other parent's views. So don't feel bad.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 13/01/2025 16:56

Wait, did you tell her you were going out for tea or just said you’d feed her and she assumed you were going out?? If someone said they’d feed my child, I’d just assume they’d shove something in the oven for them not ask where you were taking them!

Either way, she is rude and KFC was fine.

I've read this exact post before

Me too

krustykittens · 13/01/2025 17:05

KFC is perfectly fine. And you can tell her from me, as a former employee of Bella Italia, it is shit food dressed up fancy, so she can wind her neck in.

PonyPatter44 · 13/01/2025 17:06

I like a bit of KFC occasionally, and the other mum was rude.

However, someone mentioned this earlier and now I need to know - what's wrong with cheese?

BigFatLiar · 13/01/2025 17:08

mitogoshigg · 13/01/2025 16:05

Who else is now fancying kfc???

Can't remember the last time I had it but I'm wondering if dh could pick some up on his way home from the motorway services.

Yep, kfc is OK
OH has dinner sorted, perhaps I should suggest KFC tomorrow.
We used to take ours to KFC or McDonalds or Pizza Hut for a treat nothing wrong with them. We used to stop at Little Chef when out for the day. Didn't matter where, for them it was an adventure rather than eating at home

CurlewKate · 13/01/2025 17:12

@Skiptogetfit "
"I would class any pizza as fast food. All that cheese. Ugh! "

How do you define "fast food"?

CrowleyKitten · 13/01/2025 17:12

it's fine occasionally. I definitely sometimes had it much younger than that.
okay, fast food isn't the best, but as long as it's not overly frequent, it's perfectly normal.
you made sure her child was looked after and fed. and it sounds like she enjoyed it as a treat.

she said no allergies. she didn't say, no allergies but I don't want them eating fast food.

My brother used to do the IT for KFC, quite a bit of the cooking is controlled over the internet and he would fix their faults.

He said the hygiene is shocking and there would be bin liners full of rotten chicken, open and stinking and every surface is covered in a film of oil/fat, so much so, the staff have to wear special sand paper soled shoes.

I wouldn't give a KFC to my dog let alone a child.

So every KFC has a hygiene rating of 0-1 does it?

LuckySantangelo35 · 13/01/2025 17:16

Wow, a 100% YANBU for you Op!
that mum needs to get a life and be grateful for your help! Honestly how is she gonna cope when her daughter goes to uni and lives on supermarket vodka, super noodles and cheap takeaway pizza?!

MerryMaker · 13/01/2025 17:18

Honestly, you are making a big deal of a throwaway remark from a mum who needed an urgent hospital appointment. Chill out
