To think KFC is fine for an 11 year old?

New friend stuck for emergency childcare for a hospital appointment

I offered to have her, no problem. This was Saturday afternoon and her mum would be out early evening

I asked if she had any allergies because I said 'I'm happy to feed her, what does she like, any allergies?'

Her mum said no allergies, where were you thinking? I said Bella Italia

Her mum said that's lovely! That would be great

Job sorted. Got there and they had closed down! So we went nearby to KFC (both girls very happy and keen to have that instead)

Was I wrong not to run this by her mum?

When I returned her DD, I gave a small run down of how lovely she has been, all the usual. And said we had a KFC, I can't believe X place is closed

She said 'Oh? I thought you were taking her to Bella's Sad. I don't like her having fast food'

I said sorry about that, the conversation trailed off and then I said my goodbyes, said I hoped she felt well soon and drove off

Was I wrong here? She explicitly said she had no allergies and this isn't something I would be bothered about, a friend taking my daughter to place Y when they had previously said place Z (obviously no allergies involved)

I would class any pizza as fast food. All that cheese. Ugh! Just because you’re eating it in a naice middle class environment doesn’t mean it’s better for you.

Pizza Express isn't middle class 😂

What’s wrong with cheese?

No good deed goes unpunished @whereisthediff.

It's actually upper class, Prince Andrew famously dines there...

Ohshutupsimonyoutwat · 13/01/2025 15:31

Hell would freeze over before I did her another favour. I hope she gave you the money for her childs food?

zeddybrek · 13/01/2025 15:31

That's a very ungrateful response. You helped her! KFC is fun for kids as an occasional treat, she needs perspective.

And it's pizza express, hardly any cheese on them, they're not a cheese feast, with extra cheese with cheese stuffed crust, and a cheese dip from Dominoes.

I wouldn't feed KFC to my dog.

And so you shouldn't, they shouldn't be eating chips and fried food or milkshakes etc

I wouldn't feed KFC to my dog.

Neither would I as it makes him shit through the eye of a needle, I'm fine with that, more chicken for me

Tvp123 · 13/01/2025 15:33

I'd love to see her shopping trolley! I bet she doesn't just shop in the fresh food aisles and fast food is no different to ultra processed food imo.

My brother used to do the IT for KFC, quite a bit of the cooking is controlled over the internet and he would fix their faults.

He said the hygiene is shocking and there would be bin liners full of rotten chicken, open and stinking and every surface is covered in a film of oil/fat, so much so, the staff have to wear special sand paper soled shoes.

I wouldn't give a KFC to my dog let alone a child.

You're quite right, the chicken has bones in and dogs shouldn't be eating chips either.

Rummly · 13/01/2025 15:34

KFC’s good for you. The Colonel lived to 90.

I also heard he used to feed his dog KFC. Apparently it won Best in Breed 14 times at the Kentucky Kennel Club, because of its glossy coat and firm posture. All down to the secret blend of herbs and spices.

Anyway, YANBU. What an ingrate that mother is!

Well most have 5* ratings. It's the joy of franchises.

KfC isn't really food in my opinion (a meal there contains a lot of harmful substances and doesn't provide the nutrition the body needs). I really can understand her blurting this out.

But as a one off it isn't really going to make any difference.

I hope she was just a bit shocked and blurted this out without meaning to be ungrateful.

You haven't done anything bad!! But there are quite a few people who totally avoid these sorts of places because of the animal welfare, business ethics, nutritional harm etc so it's not really a neutral alternative.

Starsandall · 13/01/2025 15:37

You did her a favour she should have provided her a lunch if she doesn’t like her to eat at particular places.

HappyFitnessQueen · 13/01/2025 15:38

I wonder why there was no one else able to look after her child for her Hmm

NiftyKoala · 13/01/2025 15:39

All she should have said is: thank you so much.

B0xes · 13/01/2025 15:40

HansHolbein · 13/01/2025 14:49

The next time she needs emergency childcare she can shove it up her arse.

Absolutely this. How rude.

LadyChilli · 13/01/2025 15:40

Yes it's fine. I don't like my DC having fast food much either but you can be sure if someone is kind enough to help me out I'd not be specifying anything other than actual allergies. There was no need for her to mention it and you did nothing wrong.

Caiti19 · 13/01/2025 15:40

Friend wanted her cake (the free childcare support) and to eat it too (dictate what you eat with her). The only appropriate response from her would have been "thank you so much for looking after her and feeding her at short notice. I owe you one!".

We don't eat KFC, but my child has been brought on at least 3 occasions by other Mums to KFC in a playdate scenario. I am mortified at the mere thought of me ever reprimanding another Mother for her choice of eating establishment! The entitlement!

Gemmawemma9 · 13/01/2025 15:41

People are outrageously cheeky. Fine to think that internally (even though nutritionally Bella Italia isn’t much better!) but don’t verbalise it to someone who’s done you a fucking favour! I’d not be doing any favours for her again.

whereisthediff · 13/01/2025 14:58

No, she didn't. But I honestly didn't want or expect any

How rude! I always send money with mine for an outing because I don't want to take for granted that the other parents will invite my DC. And even worse, she was not happy with where you took her child that you had as a favour! What an unpleasant person! And poor girl to live with a mother so neurotic and orthorexic that she thinks eating at KFC once is a problem. Don't do any more favours for that ungrateful and displeasant mum!!!

No wonder she doesn't have any emergency childcare.
